The hotel is very good, looks just refurbished. The "zoo" style is nice. The service is excellent. The only remark is the restaurant a little bit expensive, but overall is very good. Not so close to the city center, but with the metro is very easy and fast to reach the center. Overall comment very good.
I frequented this establishment during my business trip to Hamburg last week, having chosen it upon the recommendation from a colleague. The hotel is located right next to the Hamburg Zoo, which is quite a way outside the city centre. However, the distance to the city was secondary for my plans and, in any case; an Underground Station is close by, providing fast service to the city. It was the underground Car park, incorporated into the Hotel that was of more importance to me and the 20 Euro per night per car is in line with what is commonly charged in Europe. Upon arrival the check-in procedures for me and my colleague, where executed quickly, probably as we were the only ones there trying to check-in Upon requesting for a dinner reservation in their Restaurant for the evening, the answer of the front desk staff indicated to us, that it might proof difficult to obtain a table, but they would try. All the Rooms in this Hotel are themed; mine was on the “Asia” themed floor, making the whole place look like one of them themed hotels of EuroDisney. I am sure that it’s great for families with kids, but I just could not see the real value in that. Mind you, if they would have been consequent in seeing this through, they would have used more authentic or better quality props, instead of those rather cheap feeling re-makes, leaving me with the feeling of being in a ow budget movie. But that is personal taste and, obviously, everybody’s is different The Room themselves had well working air-condition and a large LED Interactive TV Set. All amenities where foreseen, except any coffee or tea making facilities, but therefore including a minibar, stocked very sparsely with extra small bottles of soft drinks and a beer, all at commonly high Minibar prices. The 4 Euro price tag for the “Welcome drink” bottle of Mineral water was also way over the top, but seem to be a typical thing to do, found often in German Hotels. As is this habit to have only “crawls speed” Wi-Fi for free, whilst charging extra for Wi-Fi at halfway decent speeds. Not very business customer minded. The rest of the Room, including the bathroom, that sports a “rainfall” shower, is pretty much standard for a Hotel of this category and can’t be faulted. The Bed was nice and of good size with an excellent matrass. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the staff of this Hotel. Whilst, of course, there where exceptions, but generally speaking the staff came over as uninterested at best, to outright rude! Starting with the male staff member of the front desk to the Head Waitress of the Restaurant, attitude seemed to be a problem. When, at 18:00, we decided to frequent the bar for a pre-diner aperitif, we sat for more than 15 minutes without anybody available to serve. Only upon having enquired at the front desk as to verify that the bar was actually open, somebody did come to take our orders. Even then it took us another 15 Minutes to get a simple Gin Tonic, as nothing had been prepped, something which was done as we sat at the bar, not being able to understand each other’s words due to the racket the rather noisy ice crushing machine made. When we decided to make our way to the quite large Restaurant for our dinner reservation, we were greeted by the Head Waitress, expecting to be shown to the table that was reserved for us. Instead, she pointed towards the area at the windows in the near completely empty restaurant, instructing us to choose any of the plenty free tables. When, due to us being worried that there would be too much of a draft from the Windows, we took a table towards the centre of the near empty place, she made it very obvious to us, that she was not happy with our choice. Subsequently we noticed that, despite it only being the start of the dinner service, most tables had been already set for the next morning breakfast service. Not what you expect from an establishment that wishes to be in this class. It has to be said, that the food was of very good quality and the presentation was excellent. Full marks for the chef and his team! The Breakfast Buffet, which was charged separately at 20 Euro per head, was well stocked with a quite large variety of products and the Waitress staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, once you look in a little more detail at the offering, you notice for example, that the scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon, all pre-cooked in copious amounts, were cold. In closing, I can say that the hotel itself is fine and, if you like this themed kind of rooms, you will love them. The staff however needs some to seriously update their attitudes towards customers and, strangely enough, the staff that are clearly non-German Nationals working there are fine, competent and friendly. I close with a note to myself, not to listen to recommendations of colleagues in the future…..
Parking garage directly under the hotel, very convenient. Classic Hagenbeck atmosphere in the whole hotel. The breakfast room was flooded with light and had style. The breakfast was exclusive (honey from honeycomb, great!). The breakfast service expresses arranged and friendly, very neat appearance. The bed was super comfortable, the room (we had the African floor) gave us Serengeti flair. We will not have to think about the next Hamburg stay, where we stop! We will gladly come again. I stayed here for one night during a recent business trip. Very usefully placed for the Zoo and also for business meetings in the northern area of the city close to the airport. Very comfortable room with an African theme. Stylish comfortable bar and good food in the restaurant. Also very close to a metro station for movements around the city.
Good hotel with friendly professional staff, excellent breakfast, good rooms, in a central location. Overall, it is a good value hotel and recommended to business travellers. The restaurant has a good selection of local and international dishes with good prices.
The hotel is really nice with different themes for their room. However the shower cabin is rather impractical. Only 1/2 a glass door. After a shower, the outer area looks like a flood. As for the reception, she's not that friendly, more like trying to get her job done for the day. While checking in, another couple was standing right beside us. It is the duty of the front desk to tell them to go behind us but She didn't. Breakfast was really good.
Arrived late evening and got room on 1st floor which was a designated smokers room which was not suitable. Hotel full but reception promised a change next day. And room duly changed to 453 next day by hotel staff. Great spacious room with views to two aspects. Good bathroom. Nespresso coffee maker. Fridge / minibar. Safe. Rooms clean and staff very good. Easy access into city centre by train or taxi. Large dining room. Only had breakfast but wide choice and self service. We were staying here because of it’s close proximity to the Hamburg Curling rink but it seemed popular with business people and families with its zoo themed rooms. Excellent value too.
Average facilities for a 4 star hotel - rooms are very non-uniform for the same prices Theme of the hotel is good. Also it is next to the Zoo. Location is fine. Very limited options on the restuarant menu.
Stunning hotel 5 mins walk from Hamburg zoo with good travel links to the city centre and airport. This hotel is decorated as if you'd just stepped in to Africa, even the corridors provide the occasional animal noise. The rooms are spacious and keep with the African theme with masks on the walls and a very unusual sink in the ensuite which resembles an African drum. Dinner offered a limited menu but food was good and breakfast had a vast selection to choose from. My only issue was the restaurant at dinner only had a few other diners and we waited quite a while to get served, however, the staff were polite and professional. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
I felt this hotel stands out from many others with an interesting ethnographic theme, showcasing the different continents and a touch of anthropology museum. This is all done tastefully and giving good background information. The built quality is excellent with high-quality furnishing and decoration, and better than most hotels of this category. The breakfast is very good and what you expect from a 4-star hotel. Location is 50m away from underground, yet quiet, and right by the zoo, for which you also get a significant discount.
