The Schimmelpenninck Huys, an old mansion in the heart of the city of Groningen, has the charm of bygone years, but it is fully renovated and offers all the modern hotel facilities. We had a cosy room and it was cosy, albeit small, but it was modern, clean and the bathroom was spacious and similarly very clean. The hotel has a beautiful courtyard where it is nice to sip from a glass of wine. The dining- and breakfast rooms also have the charm of a an old renovated stately house. The staff is very friendly. And finally, the hotel is located a few hundred yards away from the central market with its many cafés and terraces.

The hotel is right in the city center with a garage to park your car, which is nice. The staff is friendly and the rooms are nice enough, if a bit rugged around the edges. They could do with a fresh coat of paint and the replacing some of the worn details like the slightly cracked bathroom mirror and the bathtub's worn shower nozzle. The rooms were otherwise well kept though - clean and neat with large windows overlooking the yard below. Breakfast was great and a gluten intolerant person has nice choices to start their day.

We needed a place to stay for one night while we went to the TT races in Assen and stumbled across this lovely town. I strongly recommend a visit (1-2 nights at most). This hotel is quite interesting and quirky. It’s modeled after an old grand hotel with lots of fascinating features (including crazy staircase). The hotel has a front and back portion with a lovely quiet and romantic courtyard. We didn’t eat here but people said it was a great restaurant. The hotel is located near the middle of this cool town yet our room was quiet. Air conditioning would improve the experience and/or a window that opens. The patio door opens but who wants to sleep with an open door to a public balcony. But they did include a fan. Luckily it was June and not to warm. Some basics were missing such as water bottle, refrigerator, coffee and minibar. And while body wash can do a lot, shampoo and conditioner are standard in hotels these days. We asked for toothpaste at the front desk, but they ran out and unfortunately, breakfast was not included. All in all, it was an ok experience.

We had a weekend without our little kid. Fotos of the hotel made us happy bud the reality was sad. It should be renovated 15 years ago. Rooms are old with all discomfort with it. The restaurant was not very clean and the staff..... well they never saw us (never said 'goodmorning' or 'enjoy your meal' just no word at all. Our weekend was nice, Groning was nice, bud this hotel, never again!!

Location is excellent, really central and waking distance to the central station and University. Staff very nice and helpful. Good breakfast. Rooms however are really not as advertised; need to be renewed. Acoustics were also terrible, my room had a nice view to the terrace but unfortunately that also meant that I had a tough time sleeping because acoustic isolation was really bad. Also could hear doors opening and shutting. Not a comfortable sleep.

Reception very quick polite and very helpful staff through out. Breakfast bar area jaded and tired. Needs refurbishment, needs paint, needs chairs that match the tables in height. Style is a poor mix of old and mid 20th Century decor. The adjacent meeting room shows much more genuine decor and impressive ceiling and lighting. Stairs in old building are steep and potentially dangerous, uneven surfaces and not level in places. No lifts. Rooms were dated , tired mixed decor.Ancient TV. Jacuzzi area not up to standards of cleanliness required mould between tiles. However ,Bed very comfortable and quality sheets.

Flexible in booking and convenient parking. Although the rooms are a ‘collection over time’, the overall atmosphere is good a viby. Very central location in the hustle and bustle of Groningen. Solid breakfast and great renowned restaurant kitchen. Try the in-house massage and beauty salon - recommended.

We stayed there for two nights to visit the Groninger Museum which is a short walk from the hotel. The hotel is well placed, close to most places of interest. The front of the building belies the size of the hotel whic extends a long way back. Room was comfortable, nice bath with lots of hot water. Decent breakfast.

I only spent one night here during a recent business trip. From the outside it looked closed as it only had a small frontage and the neon sign was off. I worked out later that I had entered by the wrong door, hence I couldn't find reception. However, whilst I was wandering around like an idiot, the extremely friendly and helpful staff guided me to reception which was very quick and efficient. I was shown through the initial maze, through the lovely outside courtyard towards an elevator which took me to my room. Then another mazy wander into what seemed like a different building (all well signposted I must add) to get to room 58. The room was great - huge comfortable bed and some english speaking channels on the TV. I had somehow received a room with a huge jacuzzi bath which was enjoyed later that evening. Breakfast was fine, the bread was fantastic, the coffee machine confusing (don't reuse your cup if you have previously had a latte - milk overload everywhere!). All in all, a great place to stay in the pretty town of Groningen. I didn't eat there during the evening but wandered around to find somewhere else. Due to the tow being a student town, my 40-something self felt extremely old! Staff were polite, helpful and spoke better english that I do - and I am meant to be a native speaker. I will be back during my next trip to Groningen.

Schimmelpennick was chosen for high level meeting for its authentic atmosphere and building, as well as promising menu. The food was good, but didn't meet expectations based on menu and price. Moreover, waiter did not had the right touch and feel, often interrupting discussions and disturbing speeches. Atmosphere and wines were good
