Beach views & accommodation amazing (clean, spacious, everything you need). Good breakfast, with friendly & helpful staff on hand. Pity we were only here for 3 nights, as could get used to waking up to the sound of waves crashing on the beach. Great spot for exploring the wonderful scenery & walks, not forgetting the Pancake Rocks just 5 minutes from the hotel. Would highly recommend.
We stayed just one night on a group tour of the South Island. Arrived early evening and struggled to find our room despite directions from Reception staff. Rooms are wooden chalets, very spacious and well equipped with views directly over the beach to swirling waves. By dinner time it was raining and as the only way to the restaurant was outside down some precarious steps in fading light, not a safe journey for anyone of limited mobility. There is no lift. By the end of dinner we returned to our room up the slippery steps in rain and poor light. Buffet Dinner was a meagre affair with a rather unambitious selection of meat fish and veg followed by a choice of two unimaginative desserts. Breakfast the following morning was fairly ordinary and I’m convinced the scrambled eggs were reconstituted from dried ingredients. Service ok, but we had much better at previous hotels on the tour. Would not have been sorry to miss this one.
From the time we checked in with the lovely staff at the front desk. Then we went across the road to the eco suite. The view from the bed was fabulous. Great bathrooms and kitchenette. Very well equipped..a lovely pathway, well lit took us under the road and to the restaurant. Overllloking the beach with the most beautiful Sunset happening before our eyes. We sat outside to enjoy the last of the evening rays TIP take mosquito repellant..you will need it at any time of year. Then we enjoyed a beautiful dinner and then went into the bar area for a drink before the short walk back to our suite. Totally amazing...
Set right next to the beach, this is the perfect spot to stay overnight on your way up the West Coast. The rooms are modern well appointed, and offer a degree of self catering with fridge and kitchen utensils. There is no AC but despite visiting during heat wave, the fan in the room did give adequate relief! All rooms look out to sea, and a walk along the beach is recommended. Service and food in the restaurants are of a good standard, as was the buffet breakfast.
Location super but that’s pretty much it. Close to pancake rocks and right by the beach (dependent on your room number). Yet, the word resort is heavily overstating the premises, I would call it a bad motel. WiFi not properly working throughout, very limited tv options (no sky what all other places we went before offered), charing extra for credit card payments!!!, dirty rooms (ours was full of spider webs) and room furniture etc. generally pretty aged. Def. not worth the money but given the lag of alternatives, got stuck with this one. Cannot recommend and would not stay here again!
The rooms were well made up, nice and clean, with a balcony. A nice dinner with some wine to watch the sunset, and what a view of the sunset over the ocean! Short walk to the pancake rocks in the morning. Great location and service.
Asked for and received a full ocean view room, which also had a balcony. This is a very 'beachy' place - you are right on the ocean the the beach is private (but not good for swimming - rip tides). Pancake rocks line both sides of the generous beach area, and you will be lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. The bed was not particularly comfortable for me, but my husband like it. Bathroom is small with a shower only. The damp from the beach does have an effect, but the room was quaint. The hotel restaurant was a bit pricey but the food was quite good. We called for reservations and arrived at the time we were told, but a HUGE group had been seated 15 minutes earlier and service was very slow. We would have preferred being told to come later. What I particularly did not like is that the hotel charged an extra fee for using a credit card. Go to any coffee cafe, any shop, and everyone used credit or another electronic payment service - we felt it was a rip off when hotels charge extra. There's really not a lot in Punakaiki - just the pancake rocks and blow holes (which are truly magnificent). Overall, if you don't get an ocean view room it's not worth it. If you do, however, it's a fantastic place to rest your weary soul.
The view from our room was stunning, and seeing the sun set over the waves was fabulous. However, there were several drawbacks to this place that make it impossible for me to class it any better than "Average." Our room was quirky, with a port-hole window in the sitting area, and another window in the bathroom that looked onto the outdoor path. The latter did not give us a sense of privacy. But there were two big problems in particular. First, the heat. Because the room faced directly into the western sun, it became very hot. But there was no air conditioning unit in the room. There was a small electric fan, but when we turned it on, we felt that the noise it made was even worse than the heat. We called the front desk to ask for a different fan. Another one, equally small, was finally delivered, but it was almost as noisy as the first. And second, speaking of noise: Although the hotel faces the beach and the ocean, there is a highway in between. Our room was on the ground floor, and we were rather close to the cars, vans, and trucks going by. Because we needed to keep the door of our balcony open (due to the heat), the noise from the highway was terrible. It made it hard to sleep. All night, it sounded as if vehicles were driving through our room. The hotel restaurant, by contrast, is situated on the beach itself, so it has the stunning view without the noise and visual pollution of the highway. If you love a good view, and don't mind excessive noise and heat, you will probably enjoy this hotel.
The Resort Hotel takes in bus tours and at times it may be difficult to make a booking for the Jacob's Grill due to numbers. We were staying elsewhere and managed to make a booking the day before hand. Our group of 3 couples (4 being Coasters) enjoyed our dining experience, along with the great Seascape views. We all enjoy coming back to Punakaiki from time to time for R & R. It's a great spot and the Resort is a great facility.
Our room was on the higher level of this hotel with a balcony overlooking the ocean. Fabulous views of the breakers and weather rolling in. The room was spacious and comfortable with a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. Our shower room was functional but not exceptional. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. The room did show some tiny areas of wear but nothing that was an issue and considering the hotel's proximity to the shore line, it's amazing that the salt air has not done more damage ! Breakfast was served in the restaurant, which also had fantastic views of the bay. The food was plentiful and hot, with plenty of cereal choices, fruit, yoghurt etc. All in all we enjoyed the stay. The hotel is only 10 minutes easy walk to the Pancake rocks and blow holes which was an added bonus.
