This was our honeymoon - we already put it back a week to fly on the dreamliner which thanks to Thompsons we never managed as they changed our plane twice but this in no way altered our impressions on the hotel We arrived and were dealt with very promptly - asked to sit in the area near the terrace and we were brought a welcome drink whilst reception sorted out paperwork Mr George took our bags up to our room, lovely man and a credit to the hotel, always smiling and always willing to hold a door or say hello - the rooms aren't modern but in same respect they aren't decrepit - it has air con, it has a ceiling fan, bathrooms are nicely fitted and balconies are also well kitted out Restaurant - we went down for breakfast on our first morning and it was like walking into a retirement home for the German middle classes - you can wear shorts for breakfast and my other half has a tattoo on his shin and you'd have thought he was walking around singing songs that won the war with the looks we were getting - not a particularly comfortable experience and the evening meal did little to change that opinion We only ate there four times out of 14 - on our first full day we went to eat, very pleasant and attentive way in which the staff look after you but you always thought you were the odd ones out - you might be sat having a conversation, look up and see a whole table staring at you - we were correctly dressed, fine we had polo shirts with logos on and not cotton shirt shirts (this is how careful we were to try and blend in, there was no outlandish dressing on our behalf) - but i personally felt like we were just not welcome The pool areas were nice enough, good to be able to get a clean towel as and when you wanted by merely swapping daily should you choose, again only went once as when we went to our room to escape the mid-day sun we came back to an obnoxious individual who despite the fact our towels and sun tan lotion we on the beds found it acceptable to take the beds We did have the need to call a Dr whilst there after my other half had a poor reaction to mosquito bites and reception were very helpful in arranging this - the cleaners were lovely (possibly a little frustrated that we didn't want or need the room to be overhauled every day) Ultimately, the clientele, more than the staff just made us feel uncomfortable - we ate there twice for breakfast and twice for an evening meal despite staying half board (quite frustrating) it impacted on us financially given we made the decision to fund 10 meals out rather than eat there - we were there for our honeymoon after all - so after 145 euros for a Dr's call out and then the cost of eating out for the majority of the stay it proved quite a questionable choice of stay If you are looking at staying here and do so knowing of the environment then you will not be disappointed - it is an old colonial style building, the staff are old school and very courteous, if you are a little younger or god forbid dress in anyway other than as expected (personally scruffy long pants with sandals looks worse than a proper styled pair of shorts, not beach wear but chino fabric shorts) then it isn't for you Final word on checking out, the lady on reception offered a shower room before we left (our pick up was 17:45) and this was greatly appreciated, we had to be out of our room for 11am which left a long old day - it happened to be a very sticky day and the offer to freshen up was a god send Perhaps when i'm in my 70's i might go back - i am in my 40's now, my partner mid 30's and for us it just didn't work but i refuse to down grade the hotel as a result as i just don't think the two were right for each other
We stayed at the Riu Palace Maspalomas four years ago and decided on a return visit. We were not disappointed! The hotel is traditional in style but could do with a little updating, we were advised by the Sub-director that the hotel is due for refurbishment within the next two years, although bathrooms would be sooner. The location is perfect, a 15 minute walk will get you to the Yumbo Centre and 45 minutes over the dunes will get you into Meloneras. We didn't encounter any problems getting sun beds at any time of the day, with towels supplied at the poolside until 11am. We enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere around the pool, no loud music blasting! Food was buffet style with a good choice, something to suit everyone. Not keen on the two sitting arrangement for dinner (6.30 or 8.30pm), could it not be open sitting during these times, then people could choose to dine when it was convenient for them? All staff were very friendly and helpful, with the exception of two gentlemen taking orders for drinks on the terrace who were surly, unfriendly and made no attempt to engage with us. Complimentary Wifi is available and connection was good throughout the hotel, even around the pool area, but think €20 per week for the use of a safe is a bit expensive.
I will try and give as honest and detailed review as possible......we are two days from going home after what will be a ten night stay ....... ARRIVAL We had hired a car so no issues with transfers ....there are about 20 parking spaces in the hotel but plenty of free road side spaces as well .....on arrival we were given a glass of bubbly so nice touch ....free wifi throughout the whole hotel at no extra cost is a bonus .... ROOM Is it dated? A little but I'd say more traditional.....ample wardrobe space and probably the first hotel I've ever stayed in that had an adequate amount of clothes hangers ......room is cleaned daily and if you put a card on the bed sheets and bedding will be changed ....terrible that you have to pay €20 per week for the use of a safe .....why? Do you not think we pay enough for the holiday? There is a mini bar which prices are steep €3 for a small bottle of Fanta ridiculous ....pop over to the supermarket adjacent to the hotel so much cheaper.... We paid for a sea view level 2 and our room was perfect ....it overlooked the dunes and the balcony was great with sunbeds and ample space.....only one plug socket worked and that was half hanging out of the wall a little dangerous but had no choice but to use it ...... Very disappointed that I contacted the hotel prior to my visit to say it was my partners 40th birthday and could they do something nice like a bottle of wine in the room (which I was willing to pay for) but my request went totally unnoticed ....not good customer service! POOL There are two pools both freezing cold and a jacuzzi which is also freezing....... We had no problems getting sunbeds no matter whether we went to the pool at 8am or later in the afternoon there were always beds available .....so no sunbed olympics for me this holiday ....in fairness most people are over 60 and don't think they could run for a sunbed even if they'd wanted to.......the pools feel like gods waiting room......no music ....no fun......no lilos allowed ......I'm on holiday !!! I'm not asking for it to be loud and obnoxious but come on a little bit of atmosphere wouldn't go amiss........drinks at the pool are a little steep with a jack Daniels without coke being just over €9!.........the snack bar is reasonable and the food good!......you get a pool card and can get fresh towels by the pool everyday if needed....... DINNER NOW THIS IS WHERE IT ALL STARTS TO FALL DOWN .......... We were told we had an 830 sitting for dinner we wasn't asked our preference of either 630 or 830 .....I don't want to be dictated to when I can eat my dinner I'm on holiday! Surely a better policy would be you can go to reception every morning and choose your sitting ......we also wasn't aware of the long trousers policy for men at dinner so as my partner doesn't suffer the heat well he only bought shorts ....who wants to sit in 30degree heat in long trousers........so for the first four days we were unable to eat in the hotel as he didn't have any long trousers......after several days of hunting for a long pair of trousers and £40 later he managed to buy a pair and we headed off to dinner .......RIU please take notice if you are going to enforce a policy of long trousers enforce a smart policy as well .....we saw several men with ripped jeans tshirts and beach sandals surely a smart pair of tailored shorts with a shirt looks so much nicer than this and do you not think this is a little discriminatory with ladies being able to wear what they want we saw one lady in particular showing everything bar what she had for breakfast lunch and dinner her dress just about covered....well not much at all!......if your going to set a policy do it right!.........the food was nice lots of choice buffet style but fresh and plentiful there is a chance to go to the ala carte restaurant but we didn't bother .......in ten days we used the restaurant twice! With four of these not being our choice.....if you order wine and don't finish it you can save it for the following evening.......the staff are lovely especially our waiter Enrique who was very funny....... LOCATION Is excellent .......ten minute walk to Cita or about half hour to the Yumbo.....both are huge shopping centres with shops bars and restaurants .....taxis are very cheap ....the hotel is right on the dunes and a walk to the beach takes about 20mins don't wear flip flops if it's really hot as your feet will get burnt ....yes I was one of the stupid ones! Overall a nice holiday but if you are young at heart and want a hotel with atmosphere and good vibes this is not the hotel for you .....it is mostly German clientele not a lot of English which isn't a problem but I've never encountered such rudeness.....if you make way for them in a corridor and let them past or open a door for them they look at you like your heads turning green no manners at all....it defiantly is a pensioners paradise ....would we come back yes In about twenty years time ......
Room with sea view have large balcony plenty room to sunbath, some are overlooked but this does not stop some people sunbathing in the nude. Rooms have small fridge but it full of drink that you have to pay for ( not cheep ). And you can also hire a safe for 20Euro per week. The hotel it self is very clean and The pool water is tested daily so you know its safe. To get to the sea from the hotel over the dunes can take you from 30mins to 2 hours if you go over the wrong dune, so be prepared for a hike. Only 1 complaint is bar and restaurant billing , Hotel billing Its all done on account you don't get copy of any bills you sign and the only way you can find out how much you spent is to ask reception every day.
this sits right on the beach and not near the main maspolomas beach (okay its on the opposite side). And although its old and can't be changed due to local regulations, but they do a good job keeping it running. Food okay, there is a (eat once for free) fine dining and a wide range of buffet food that everyone can eat. Waiters are great, so helpful and friendly; we even met people from the same side of city we are from - wow!
Stayed for a week 20 th May as a couple. The hotel was absolutely great in every respect. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel was spotless throughout. Meals were buffet style and a really good and varied choice and quality. The hotel is situated right on the Maspalomas Sand Dunes with a spectacular view and easy to walk to . We took a 4th floor bedroom which was just perfect for the views. We visited the recently updated a Riu a Palace at Meloneras which was very much larger and whilst more modern was rather more stark - we preferred the Maspalomas Riu Palace. Would certainly return.
Myself and family have just had an enjoyable and relaxing weeks break and would definitely recommend this hotel. The public areas of the hotel still just about cut the mustard but rooms are badly in need of a makeover (reason for score of 4) however room was spotless on arrival and kept very clean during our stay, must warn you that shower curtain seems to have an almost magnetic attraction to your ar$€. Food is of very good quality with plenty of choice, the only minor criticism is that you have to attend the dining room at a set time. Nearly all staff are courteous, relaxed and helpful with special mention to the man in white on reception door. There is not much in the immediate vicinity of hotel but a short taxi ride will get you to shops, bars and restaurants. Hotel clientele consisted largely of the older/ pensioner variety, but i didn't mind this as i knew i could out sprint them for the sunbeds, and should be able to take them out if the situation turned nasty. There were also some very rude German guests who would mutter !anke to me every time I made way or held a door open for them. All in all a very enjoyable holiday that was over to soon.
Just returned from our 5th visit to this hotel and have to say it's as welcoming as ever. The hotel could do with a bit of a re-furb now but the pool areas are still excellent and the rooms are spotlessly clean and serviced every day to a very high standard. Food is on a half board basis and is always to a high standard with plenty of choice. Your wine is always poured for you and the dining room staff are the best I have ever encountered. You really feel like you are out to dinner ! Going out of the hotel for a meal is a waste of time ! The bar staff are all professionals who make you feel as if they are delighted to be serving you. The views from the pool bar are stunning !! The Riu Palace Maspalomas has an ambience of it's own. Prior to dinner there is a pianist playing on the terrace (Josef Sarkosi) who is an excellent player with an extensive repetoire and the resident band (Azzuro) will have you on your feet with a superb set of old and new songs for everyone. There is also cabaret and tribute acts on most nights too !The entertainment makes this hotel a complete holiday. Our compliments to Senor Jiminez and all his staff for the fantastic job they do. We have booked again for next year already and are counting the days till we get there.
Got a great deal on this hotel from Thomson and we are currently half way through our week. We have a first floor room with a large balcony. It doesn't overlook the sea but is still very nice. The hotel is dissected by a public right of way down to the sand dunes but is great in many ways. The quality and variety of the food in the restaurant is very good although they do have parallel tables which we are not keen on. We managed to get one which was directly adjacent to another on the 2nd night. There are lots of German clients in the hotel and thus the traditional English breakfast is limited by a lack of good sausages. For what we paid £1068 for a week half board I am well impressed. Yet to see the evening entertainment apart from a few acrobatics last night so hope the Motown tribute tonight is ok.
We have stayed here at least 5 times, it is possibly one of the only hotels we return to on a regular basis and there are good reasons too. The location is perfect. Views across the dunes towards the sea are beautiful The staff never let the place down, we found every member of staff to be very friendly and always helpful There is always a wide variety of freshly cooked food available and therefore never an issue in finding something you like. Often having 4 small courses when unable to decide what to have The pool areas are incredibly well kept. Comfortable loungers and the bar service is great around the pool. Only occasionally it is slow at peak times. The only criticism is that the rooms are a little dated now but they still remain comfortable and cleaned to a high standard daily. The air conditioning is no longer brilliant but perhaps it wasn't turned fully on as we were there in May Have no doubt we will return again. I would have generally given a 4 star review as it does need updating but all the other good points ensure it gets a 5
