Booked a week here three months ago only to be moved for the first three days to sister hotel Quinta Das Vista Palace Gardens which was up in the hills with no transport owing to a "booking error" which seems to happen quite frequently. It seemed quite obvious to us that Bela Sao Tiago is the more popular hotel and people are moved to Das Vista to fill it up (see our review) so we would not risk a return trip. The Hotel is lovely and is very convenient for the Old Town and all restaurants around the area. Nice balcony room with sea view, a little dated but quite traditional. No tea/coffee facility in room - not even a free bottle of water! Nice pool - very uncomfortable sunbeds! Breakfast basic but acceptable.
Yes we returned for a weeks holiday for the 10th we are running and we just love this place The staff are wonderful facilities are very good and the rooms are good value for the money We love the breakfasts also served which offered a tremendous variety of food and it is all very tasty The hotel is in very easy reach of all the facilities in the old town and there are plenty of small bars and good restaurants within a 10 minute walk We shall certainly be returning again next year God willing
A week in September was comfortable & relaxing but there are some issues. The rooms are OK but not spectator but we could see the sea. Some rooms also look in to others which could be a bit awkward. The dinner was good quality but the service could be slow. Breakfast was a buffet, again acceptable but not outstanding. Pool & terrace area was nice but not very large but got a lot of sun. The view was very good. There are 3 hotels in the group & we saw people sent to other hotels but to booking errors. Big apologies but not what you want. So, quaint slightly oldie world feeling hotel that doesn't quite pull it off. Good location & view with easy access to town & decent quality food means its worth putting up with these little issues.
This was our 2nd visit and we enjoyed it just as much. The location is perfect ( apart from the last 50 yards up the hill!) with many bars and restaurants nearby to try, as well as being near all the attractions. We did several trips and were picked up at the hotel each time. The staff were lovely and helpful. The breakfast was great with lots of choice. The room was enormous ( we had a suite on the top floor) with stunning views, and was kept very clean. The pool was clean and quiet. Just a haven of tranquility. There is a piano in the bar area which my husband played a few times - he manager heard him play and the later that day we were sent a basket of fruit, honey bake and a bottle of Madeira wine. Lovely touch - thank you We will be back....
We arrived 2nd September we were told that our room had been double booked, they offered us to stay in their 5* sister hotel Quinta das Vistas with a free evening meal & a glass of house wine with our meal. We were not happy as I had booked & paid our room with a sea view in February. We were transferred free by taxi to the 5* hotel, we were given a suite which was very nice but the view from the balcony was limited view of the sea. We went for our evening meal which had a fixed starter & desert, the main meal option was meat or fish. The wine was not good. I sent 3 emails to the Quinta Bela Sao Tiago hotel expressing my grievance & great disappointment not staying in the hotel we had booked. To us the upgrade & free meal wasn't our choice. On Wednesday 5th September early evening we were offered as compensation free taxi's into town & back & a free massage. (We had to use taxi's to get to town & back) it was impossible for us to walk due to it being too steep & dangerous with no footpaths plus too far away. We accepted at first their offer then I broke down in tears as it wasn't really what we wanted. The hotel at night was dead. The supervisor then said he would ring our original hotel to see if there was a room with a sea view for us, there was. So we packed our cases we then we're transferred free by taxi to Quinta Bela Sao Tiago. We were so happy to be at our booked & chosen hotel but feel this could have been avoided. This is our first time in Madeira & due the upset has ruy our holiday. The Quinta Bela Sao Tiago is a lovely traditional hotel which I would highly recommend as long as they don't mess people about re their booked accommodation. Mixed feelings of good & bad.
I have been to this hotel three times and found the hotel and location to be very good.. We only stay on a bed and breakfast basis as there are so many fabulous restaurants close by in the old town (5 minutes walk). There is a wide variety of choice for breakfast including hot and cold options as well as fruit and cereals The pool and terrace areas have always been quiet and relaxing. The room had twin beds which provided comfort and were cleaned to a high standard on a daily basis
When we arrived our room was not available. The hotel had a problem with their booking system. Is this true ? We booked the room months ago and received no info about any problems. What could we do ... we accepted the room in a similar hotel of their chain. However the hotel and room were not our choice and further from the center. Besides that their info about taxi rates turned out to be not correct and caused some discussion with a taxi driver. In general: their marketing may be charming, their info and service is bad.
The best thing about this hotel was the location. So many fabulous restaurants nearby and close to the cable car and bus stops. Sadly the hotel was not up to its 4 star rating. The staff seemed unfriendly with not a single good morning at breakfast or a hello as we passed the main desk every day. The coffee at breakfast came from a machine which dispensed instant coffee or sweet cappuccino. The only good thing at breakfast was the fresh bread but the toaster was so old that it was a mission getting the bread toasted. We gave up on pre dinner drinks as it seemed obvious that we were interrupting the dinner service. The rooms were adequate but dated with furniture that was falling apart. The bathroom was a disgrace. The toiletries seemed to be in short supply as one tiny bar of soap was expected to last us the week. We had to pay a daily charge for the safe which I have never heard of before. So many things wrong in what could be a fantastic hotel.
Funchal is the most relaxing holiday we've had for a long time, we stayed at Hotel Quinta Bela soa Tiago a lovely old former mansion house overlooking Funchal harbour from the terraces. Management and staff are the most friendly helpful hard working of any hotel staff we've seen the Charming group of hotels should take note! But reluctantly I have to say this hotel is not in the 4 star end of hotels and we've stayed in many over the last 40 years in many resorts. On the surface it's a good hotel but what lets it down is the beds are very hard but when I asked if they did mattress toppers they immediately supplied one, toiletries were not replenished daily except by Hannah she is lovely. The reception staff are great and very helpful with local information and enquiries printed for you and again very friendly. The pool area was kept very well has were the gardens, but the sun loungers were way past throwing away, every one sagged, was dirty with stains from years of sun oils and no mattresses for them which made them by far the most uncomfortable beds I've ever used! Most English guest were put into outer rooms overlooking the road and side street with no view, European guest had every sea, harbour and pool view rooms in the whole of the hotel, we requested a change of room only never got one in the whole 2 weeks we were their. Even though guests turn around was quiet often i.e.:- some guest only stayed days or at most one week it shouldn't have been beyond the management to have accomplished a change of room? Breakfast food was very limited with certain foods only put out once per week i.e.:- strawberries, tomatoes with little choice left. Catered for mostly European visitors, cold meat, cake etc. We have usually so many different choices at breakfast in every 4 star hotel we've ever stayed in but not here. Lunchtime meals or snacks were very good but pricey if you stayed in at this time but this is usual in most hotels.. But The Charming group of hotels should take note and put right these problems after all your prices don't reflect what's on offer to your guests who are paying 4 star money for 3 star standards.
Hotel conveniently situated and staff helpful and courteous. Room adequate but pillows lumpy and uncomfortable and it would have been a plus to have had tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Regret booking half board as the food was not brilliant and the courses lacked imagination. When we asked if we could use the a la carte menu instead of the E39.50 four course set menu each we had apparently paid for, we were told our allowance would only be E20 each.. The first main course on the a la carte alone was €18.50. Plenty of restaurants nearby with more variety and better food as we found out. and many at half the fixed price.
