Where to begin..Fitzroy ferry boat was filthy, also toilets not working. Arrive at the "resort" which looks like it has not been maintained in a very long time. Greeted by unwelcoming staff at the desk to check in, handed our key with nothing more then a your room is in that general direction, good luck with your bags. Off we went dragging bags along gravel drive way to find what they call a "beach cabin". Open the door to the most foul smelling unused room! So bad we had to open every door and window so we could breathe. $450 a night... for a caravan park room that hadn't been maintained since it was built. Outside there are abandoned cabins with rubbish all around. Dinner time at foxy's, ordered Barramundi for a small fortune and received half a fillet of dried boxed fish. Woke up next morning to find our food frozen in the fridge. Bathroom covered in mold and broken tiles throughout the shower. games room upstairs every game completely out of order. $25 hire for snorkeling at 12pm and was told you can not keep over night unless you pay another $25. Restaurant in hotel nothing under $40 and the service was terrible. The list goes on and on. No management on site, run by the untrained staff, having to take on all unhappy customers feedback. All i can say is go for a day trip and enjoy the beautiful island, do not waste your money on the caravan park.
Our family stayed here for two nights and were very sad to leave. We had a great time walking, snorkelling and swimming. We also loved the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. At night we ate at Foxy's which provided a lovely casual atmosphere with a beautiful view across the water. We are looking forward to returning but next time will take more food, as the shop had very little available and the room had a wonderful kitchen.
ROOMS - I stayed in the most basic hotel type room, this room had a large king bed ( which could be split to 2 singles), it had a bar fridge, a TV and a lovely shower. Had tea/coffee making facilities . Room had a musty smell , but this is the rainforest, gets pretty wet. No view in these rooms or balcony, however I found it more than acceptable for sleeping in. - my sister had a 2 bdrm ocean view room. These are a 1 bdrm apt with an interconnecting hotel rm. the views from the balcony excellent. Full kitchen etc. These rooms are obviously the pick, however depending on yr needs I did not spend a lot of time in my room. - we were both amazed at how excellent the servicing of these rooms were, towels always changed, refill of shampoos, tea, coffee and always serviced to perfection, one note to the resort is the use of so many tiny shampoo bottles etc, might be idea to put in a large pump bottle, just seems very environmentally damaging. FOOD - foxeys bar and grill was awesome . I cannot understand the negative reviews. We are there 4 times and never had an issue , I found the prices for this reasonable and really only slightly higher than yr regular pub prices. - general store somewhat higher in price than mainland but this was expected. Sold bread milk cheese, all the major necessities - didn't eat at the restaurant - I had buffet breakfast included, this was good too. We did bring over a lot of our own food and cooked at night which saved a lot of money. We did notice many people bringing alcohol over openly, even though it was stated in several places you couldn't, people just seemed to do it. There were wine glasses in both hotel rooms and apartments ACTIVITIES- for me I love hiking and if you are a fitness person you will love the track up to the summit of Fitzroy island and then the light house. They say this takes 2.5 hrs , I did it in 1.5 hrs and only moderately say only "fit" people can do this , I tend to disagree , It is a hard track ( steep) but if you take yr time it's very doable. Only way to get fit is to do it and the views are so worth it - the turtle thing awesome - snorkelling trip good All in all had a wonderful 4 nights here . Oh also it's a fair hike to the boat from cairns wharf !! Get ready for some exercise if your lugging over bags of water , coke, food etc. ( ps can coke ther $4.50 so bring over ) They have a library with lots books Wifi --- not great ! . but when in foxys could get 1 bar and was sufficient for basic stuff, but hey who needs it when away :-) there is a library, table tennis, pool, live music some nights
Just had a couple nights with 2 kids under 3 and my partner and we had a great time at the resort. Our room was fantastic, large and clean and the facilities for kids is great. If we went again we would pack more food to cook ourselves though as the restaurant is very expensive and limiting.
Limited trips available on annual members ticket. No guarantee of spaces. Boat does smell musky & damp. Foxy bar often confuses or forget your food orders despite alert device used. General cafe has food that is days old or none at all. No fresh food daily. However the island is the attraction not the services. Its beautiful & snorkelling the best. Suggest take your own food for picnics. Book week in advance.
Booked what I thought was a 2 bedroom apartment but ended up with an Ocean suite and a separate studio room for the children. Not a problem as the kids are 12 & 13 and were next door. Ocean suite was nice & spacious (on retrospect we could have all fitted into this). Odd design as you have to walk through bathroom to get from bedroom to lounge. Would not recommend the studio as small, dark & smelly. Wish we had taken more food to cater in the room as main restaurant very over priced and Foxys limited particularly if there for a few days. The general store has very little to offer. Also be prepared to queue - queue when arrive at reception, queue again in the afternoon to get your key, queue to make any kind of enquiry (even the simplest), queue to check out. There should be a better system in place - don't even try to skip the queue to ask a quick question as you will be sent to the end of the line (felt as if I was back at school). In all, it is a magical place and I would return (would be more room selective and food organised).
We visited the island for the day and had lunch at Foxy's bar. The food was delicious and not too overpriced considering it was the only place to get food on the island if you aren't a guest at the resort. However, do not order lunch directly at 12 as that's when one big ferry arrives and there was a long line and a bit of a wait. Go for a swim and order at 1
We enjoyed our time on Fitzroy Island. I would suggest spending the extra on a Oceanview Suite as it was great and others were very disappointed in their smaller rooms. After reading this site we took a fair amount of food with us, and drinks, which we heard was a no no but we managed it. The food options are expensive ish at the restaurant, limited and not the greatest at Foxys bar and very limited and expensive at the general store. To be able to have our own breakfast in the room with full kitchen was great. What you save on food, spend on the oceanview suite. The activites - walks etc were great. Ferry transfers are frequent and easy to organise. Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay here for 3 nights. There were enough things for us to do to keep us busy but still had some relaxation time. We didn't get a top floor as requested but weren't on the ground, which we were glad of, however the people above made lots of noise so that was a bit disturbing in the evenings. Glad we booked an ocean suite for the extra space and the balcony. View was just okay though. Small, relaxed resort, very close to the mainland.
The resort is outdated. They charge ridiculous amounts for food as they control the only restaurants and stores on the island. Pool is not heated and therefore nobody was actually swimming during a sunny 28°C day. The rooms smell of mildew and big blankets are not provided with bedding. Kayak hire is limited to use only directly in front of resort and therefore you are unable to paddle around to the other side of the island. They don't even bring your bags to your room, they get dropped off at reception for you to carry to your room.
