Historic Log Farmhouse on Flying Cloud Farm

Bring your family and friends to our unique historic log house on our working organic farm in Fairview. The house is peaceful and spacious with lots of nooks and cozy spots to read, play music, games, write, create art, cook, eat and be together. Beautiful views of the Appalachian mountains, sunrises and sunsets, and huge mother trees surround the house. The valley is agricultural, with a dairy farm on one side, our fields of organic vegetables, berries and flowers on the others.

The space
The house was built by Dr Jim and Alice Lynch in the 1930’s. They lived in Asheville where he had a private practice and was the personal doctor to the Vanderbilt family. The log farmhouse was their country house where they spent the summers with their six children. Eventually it was left to one of their descendants. My parents bought it in 1979 and filled it with my Dad’s local medical practice and a large family. In addition to their five children, many other people were welcomed into the home - foreign exchange students, people who needed a safe place to land for various reasons, friends of friends, friends of their children, it was always a full, welcoming home. Annie Louise, the eldest daughter, and her husband Isaiah started Flying Cloud Farm in 2000, gradually growing from ½ an acre to a 20 acre farm producing organic vegetables, berries and flowers. When Annie Louise’s parents died, they renovated the farm house and are opening it up for vacation rental.

There are 5 bedrooms upstairs. The primary bedroom has a King bed and a full bathroom. Doors open to the hall and to a small bedroom with two twin beds that also has an entrance from the hall. There are 3 other bedrooms upstairs, all with Queen beds that share a full bathroom. Downstairs there is a big kitchen, dining room, and 3 other rooms with chairs, couches, a full sized futon and a single bed.

This is an historic farm house with a functional kitchen and bathrooms that are not modern or fancy. This house was built in a time where more space was appropriated to common areas than to bathrooms. Water pressure is decent, toilets and sinks functional, and views from upstairs bathrooms extraordinary. Although the kitchen is basic, hundreds of thousands or scratch made meals have been prepared, vegetables processed and canned, loaves of bread baked, and wholesome food enjoyed. We hope that your family and friends will continue the tradition.

The bathrooms are stocked with toilet paper, hand soap, and some extra basic toiletries. The kitchen is stocked with dishes, cast iron skillets, pots and pans, electric kettle, coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, and several appliances. There are coffee filters, tea and coffee, sugar, olive oil, salt, pepper and basic spices. And hot water bottles for cold winter nights. There is a propane grill available outside. You are welcome to use the washer and dryer, appliances, and supplies located on the back porch.

There is a library full of interesting books on the enclosed front porch. You are welcome to read them! A good selection of records is there as well to be played on the record player in the den. The side wrap around porch has a large dining area and a corner outdoor couch that is a lovely spot to enjoy the beautiful views.

Guest access
The driveway in front of the house has a basketball goal, a covered carport, and grassy lawns on either side of the boxwood bush circle. If you walk around the house to the right you come to another large lawn, entrance into the house from the wraparound deck, and another entrance through the laundry room to the kitchen.

You can walk down the driveway towards the farm stand. If we are working around the farmyard area we are always available for a quick hello or question. We can also arrange tours of the farm for your group.

Keep walking down the driveway, cross the bridge and you will come to our honor system farm stand, open daily April through December with goods from our farm. You can walk around the fields to the right and the left, lots of good, flat walking and running area. We will provide more detailed instructions for other nearby walks in the house manual.

Other things to note
There is central heat and air conditioning and the house stays fairly cool in the summer. There are ceiling fans in 4 of the upstairs bedrooms, and a floor fan in the fifth. Temperature can be managed by noting the outside temperature and opening or closing the windows accordingly. It is generally cooler at night, so it can be nice to let in the outside air and the soothing sounds of crickets and katydids. Closing the windows and shades during the day when temperatures outside are warmer keeps the cooler air inside.

We all know that it is good for the constitution to sleep in cooler temperatures, perhaps they designed the house with that in mind. We always went to bed with warm blankets and hot water bottles, so we have provided 15 of those for the house. Simply fill with hot water from the electric kettle and snuggle with it under the covers until you warm up. There are also electric heaters in the bedrooms to knock the chill off on especially cold nights.

This house is located in the country with a dairy farm on one side, the organic vegetable farm in the front, and hay fields on the other side. Occasionally the dairy spreads manure which can lead to an intense odor that usually dissipates within a few hours. We have no control over when they spray so we hope that it will not negatively impact your stay.

There is a farm stand at the end of the driveway that is busy with regular traffic of stand customers coming and going. It is a self service, honor system farm stand open April through December, stocked with plant starts, produce and flowers from the farm. As you drive up the driveway towards the farm house you will cross a bridge and the farmstead area with greenhouses, wash shed and farm workshop will be on the left. There is activity here with the tractors coming and going, farm workers in the greenhouse, and returning with truckloads of produce and flowers, especially during the months of April - October. It is a busy, active place with a steady flow of visitors, and community interaction can be found. The farmhouse and property also allows space for more quiet activities and peaceful spots to be creative.

There are other people and animals living and working on the property. There is a cabin behind the farmhouse that is occupied year round. There are also some out buildings and buses that provide housing and facilities for seasonal farm employees. We have several farm dogs that run around the property. They are friendly and we do our best to keep them under voice command while allowing them the freedom to be canines.
