IntercityHotel Gelsenkirchen3.0 out of 5.0

Really basic hotel, but location is good if you are going to Veltins Arena - railway station is just couple of hundreds of meters away. But that's about it.. Room was really hot. It was also noisy as busy road is just couple of meters from the window - which makes it impossible to open window to get some fresh air as there is no way you could sleep if the window is open.. So definitely not a hotel to stay any longer, but a place to crash for one night. Car parking limited in the hotel but there is a parking house in the next block.
The hotel offers smallish but standard rooms. WIFI ok, bath clean and modern. Bed firm=ok. Used as a double the room would have been very crowded, but ok as a single. Breakfast is the standard hotel breakfast, good tea and coffee options, even to go. Ticket for public transport is included which is nice if you need it. Almost directly at the train station. Not a very nice neighborhood, but if there are any in Gelsenkirchen I was not able to find them. The opera house is worth a visit, though. The best thing is the extremely reasonable price.
I work in Essen so normally stay there but when there is a fair at the Messe accommodation can be scarce and subject to hyper inflation. Intercity was a bit tired but clean and welcoming. Bonus was that I was given a ticket covering public transport over a wide area, saving me €60 /day in commuting taxi fares. I disagree with the reviewer who said it was in the middle of nowhere - it's 2 mins walk from the hauptbahnhof and 5 mins walk from the town centre where there are plenty of bars and restaurants. I'm actually staying there again in the near future, so you can drawer your own conclusion on my opinion.
Stayed here for a couple of nights on business due to the fact there were absolutely no other hotels in Dusseldorf or Essen(where I work). Hotel clean, receptionist on check in and out was really friendly and helpful (same lady). Room was tiny, hard mattress with a thin duvet and a wafer thin pillow, I was lucky I had a twin room so doubled up. Breakfast was ok, reasonable selection of the usual continental breakfast. Overall, ok hotel for a cheap rate and it's in a good location right next to the train station. Gelsenkirchen, is a pretty drab place, had to walk at least 15minutes in the town centre to find something to eat and drink.
We stayed just one night at this hotel, arriving late one evening and leaving early the following morning, but we did not have a good night's sleep. Our room was uncomfortably hot and there was no air conditioning. We had to choose between the heat or the noise from the street. We opted for the latter. In addition, the beds were uncomfortable and so were the pillows. You could feel the protecting plastic under the sheets. Our room was clean and we appreciated the bathroom with a shower cabin instead of a bathtub with a shower head. Upon arrival we had dinner in the restaurant. The dinner had been pre-booked by the organizer of our trip, a package bus tour. The food was good but we were surprised to have a very hot tomato soup as starter, considering the heat in the hotel. The breakfast buffet next morning was plentiful.
A totally uncharming and quite rundown hotel in the middle of an intersection in the very ugly city of Gelsenkirchen., Small rooms. Breakfast and the restaurant is quite okay. You will stay here once; but not again.
The room has poor ventilation. You get a window which you can keep open but if choose to keep it closed there is no additional air system. Every morning I felt very suffocated. The breakfast is just average. The hotel staff is cordial. If you made a booking via some other agency like booking.com make sure to double check the bills you are charged at the hotel counter. They charged me 45 euros extra and simply refused to even look into the matter and asked me to contact booking.com. The internet is awful and if you want good speed you need to pay 8 euros per day.
Visited the hotel 5 years later and it was as good as remembered. Good location, friendly stuff, clean rooms. It is near the town center, shops and the train station. The town does not have much to offer but it seems good for football trips and festivals (Gelsenkirchen Amphitheater is 15 min by bus from the station).
We stayed here for a football trip. Overall it was fine for this. Good Staff were good and even got us the room when we were early. The room was functional and was perfect for our needs the bar is very comfortable and great place to have a beer and chat after the game Bad The are around the hotel at night is a bit dark
The reception did not want to spend a second more on their guests than necessary and later we found out why. Little explanation, keycard given and please go! When I returned to reception after 5 minutes because both the Tv and wifi didnt work I found out the two loud shouting guys we met in the parking were aparently the boyfriends of the two girl receptionists. The small room behing the counter was used for their little get together. One staffmemember managed to get away from the boyfriends lap and stumbled to the counter. The other remind deeply envolved in her boyfriends hugs. What can you expect if budgets for staff gets lower and lower? This!
