Fantastic hotel which has clearly had a lot of work done in recent times. I was greeted warmly by Ricky and checked in to Room 2, which was massive - and simply perfect for my (5 stone) greyhound, as he had space to move. The Royal Marine is one of 2 dog friendly hotels in the area, and as you can see, His Lordship was made ever so welcome and he slept like a log, as did I! I brought his own bed, however my bed was super comfy and cosy. There was a tv, a (clean!) kettle with tea & coffee and large en-suite. The building itself is steeped in history and is architecturally stunning. For the same price you could stay in one of the bland, characterless, pokey guesthouses nearer town.... but why would you? From what I could tell, every room looked different, which was a nice touch. The terrace is a great place to sit and watch the Clyde roll by, and there was ample parking too. The log fire in the bar was both cosy and aesthetically pleasing, and the whole place was super clean. Sadly I was staying due to holding my husbands funeral in Dunoon, but the hotel being bright and cheerful really helped me alot. All the staff were fun and incredibly friendly (it is rare for housekeeping to say good morning these days, but the ladies here were wonderful). Also, a big thumbs-up to Fiona on the bar for making my stay a thoroughly enjoyable one; it really is the staff who make a hotel feel like home. As Arnie would say, Ill be back! Thank you xxx

The Royal Marine is an historic building, full of history, with an outstanding sea view, transformed internally with the installation of en suite bathrooms etc to suit the modern traveller.

The room was spacious but not cleaned well. There were empty sugar packets on the floor next to the bedside table, socks under the sofa in the room also, just a feeling of lack of cleanliness in the room. The one staff member we came across was friendly. We didn’t eat here so cannot comment on the food. We were on the 3rd floor, my mum always likes to know the fire escape route when she’s in a new place, leaflet in room stated to check door for map and exits - this was non existent.

Unfortunately the toilet did not flush , no staff available to report too until we checked out in the morning. They did say they would check it however, it was rather inconvenient . There is no bar available in the hotel . Great location - shame about the overall condition and lack of maintenance

Whilst we were given an early check in our room was far from clean. Hairs in the sink and toilet. Cobwebs on the walls. Windows were mouldy and looked out onto waste ground. Rooms either side of us through the night were incredibly loud, several calls made to reception but no answer so staff did nothing to resolve this.

On arrival we saw a sign saying that reception was closed (30 minutes after check in started) but a member of ataff came from the bar to help. Very helpful and showed us up to our room. Our room was on the second floor with no lifts, but managed ok. Hallway stank of smoke, I assume a fellow guest was smoking in their room as no smell in rest of hotel. Also they must have been doing it again first thing this morning as we woke up smelling cigarette smoke in our room. We couldn't find any staff to tell until we checked out this morning. Room was lovely and big. While I appreciate that I booked the economy room option, it was very tired looking and not worth £77 for the night. Stains on walls, in bedroom and bathroom. Stained hand towel hanging in bathroom. Stains behind kettle and all over the coffee/tea sachets. Loose and wobbly plugs. Bed mattress lumpy and not comfortable. The bedside lamp next to the bathroom let out a high pitched buzzing noise and I dont think its safe for use. I had a shower and the dial is fitted upside down and flitted between scalding and freezing. The door also didnt close properly in shower so i kept hitting myself. No shower gel or shampoo. I have taken pictures of the issues but can't see how to upload on Expedia. Overall just feels dated, tired and in need of manitenance. I saw in other reviews that some rooms have been updated so possibly others will be done in future but I wouldn't stay here again unfortunately.

JUST READ SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

The hotel was class , looked dated , which i like , but the rooms were like wow , wouldn't expect going into a hotel which on the outside , and in the halls were like walking into the late 19th century the i went into a room a basic btw , and a beautiful mural of david bowie and just transformed it into modern, was such a wow factor , the staff were like family , we went to the pub about 3 mile away , and the boss was there , talking away as if we were family, ive never felt so like home but while away , i only came on here to book again and noticed it asked for a review, honestly , if you want the marriot or the hilton , (which lets be honest all loom the same) the you wont be happy , but if you want to walk into history and get to your room with a view , and the room transports you back , then this is it, i honestly loved this place that much i phoned up rough and asked for an extra night , the town is so welcoming , the taxi driver was class , the kebab shop was class , everyone was happy , and trust me i tried to annoy people , they just go with it , an amazing place and an amazing bunch of people xxx
