My 4 year old son and I stayed here for the one night in our way up North. The room was fantastic, spacious and well laid out with everything we needed. Found it to be nice and quiet even through we were very central. Just above the Octogon so getting around was easy. There is parking on site but you need to get there early to guarantee a park. Also if note if you park behind the building I would recommend unloading your luggage at the door first if you have quite a bit as the hill can make things a little difficult. The room service was fantastic and the lady who delivered it was super friendly as was the lady when we went downstairs for breakfast. When we checked out we had yet another less than friendly staff member, who was very efficient but he struggled to be friendly do this did leave a bit of a bad taste on leaving.

We booked in to the Kingsgate Hotel recently for one night. The room had great views over the city, had a good sized balcony which we made the most of to catch the late afternoon sun with a glass of wine, cheese, crackers & strawberries. Had two queen beds and the room was a good size. Bathroom was also fine, only problem for me (my pet hate), the shower head was fixed to the wall, plus - was really, really high - even for hubby!! Being only 5 ft tall, by the time the water hit me, the spray was so wide & soft, I could barely feel it. Really hate that in a shower. We decided to order room service for evening meal. Hubby ordered a pizza and fries, I ordered a Caesar salad. Both meals arrived quickly. The fries were great, but unfortunately... the pizza was barely cooked, seemed like it had been microwaved, the base was raw & soggy. My Caesar salad had a quartered hard boiled egg, which I ate - BUT the lettuce was as soft & wilted as a wet tissue! Instead of crispy Cos Lettuce (which a Caesar salad should be made with), it was made with a frilly green lettuce, the bacon was more like chopped ham, then the worst thing of all... a medium lengthed light brown hair!! I rang Room Service immeditely and asked for someone to come up to see the meals. A lady came promptly, we showed her everything, she was very apologetic and offered us replacement meals and a complimentary drink. We declined the replacement meals, as there were a lot of fries which were enough. We were not charged for the pizza and salad. A real shame about the food, as the room itself was fine. Would stay again, but not eat there.

Can't beat the proximity to the city centre, town hall, conference centre and so on. Rooms ok but not stunning (not enough plugs to cope with modern needs), but otherwise ok. Would be good if the kitchen could learn to poach an egg that wasn't hard boiled!. The toast was fine though One member of the front of house staff is a little tragic, but most are great. Beware the randy musos next door!

Love this place. The rooms are very comfortable, warm and clean. Very close to the CBD, only 5 minute walk. Only thing we we were disappointed with was there was no conditioner in the bathroom and when we asked the guy behind the counter couldn’t help us. No big deal and I would stay again and recommend it to anyone.

This place is very very close to the city centre but just away so it is quiet. Walk to everything, tidy and good view, we did have an upgrade so there were only 6 room on our floor, so probably worth it to do

We stayed here for 2 nights and had breakfast buffet included in our price which made it very reasonable! Rooms were clean but dated- nice view overlooking the city. Breakfast was great. Nice big baths in rooms. I wouldn't hesitate to rebook.

we had an extremely pleasant stay here. The room was spacious and had a good view. Small enough hotel to be really friendly without compromising on a feeling of privacy. Location can't be better....absolutely great.

Great place. Central to everything you need. Friendly staff. Bed a bit uncomfortable. Didn't use the pool that was up the road but definitely will next time. We look forward to our next visit. Hope to have breakfast there next time.

Unfortunately the warm hospitality we've experienced at other NZ destinations is lacking at this hotel. Staff seem uninterested & most things have been a hassle. The rooms are comfortable but small but our balcony was filthy (cigarette butts everywhere). I wouldn't stay here if I was to return 😞

Stayed overnight at Kingsgate after driving from Port Chalmers. Stayed on the Second floor, room size was good. Location is quite nice, Meridian Mall is within walking distance. Lot of Turkish and Indian restaurants around to try. Did try the beef steak at the Jimmys on the ground floor of the hotel and was quite good. They provide the option of breakfast in bed which I always prefer. Knox church, museum, the train station are all with in walking distance. Lastly, as Cadburys have a manufacturing unit here, the chocolates and various flavours are quite cheap.
