What a marvellous place this is. From reception to food to service to bedrooms all excellent. The venue is wedding perfect, the room was very tastefully done, not in your face done but subtle. The food was beautiful and the staff worked really well to make this day rememberable for my daughter and her new husband. The hotel room part where we stayed later was large, clean and tidy. Breakfast was lovely and bountiful. Thank you all. JOHN AND VALERIE GRAY.
We recently stayed at the Clandeboye Lodge to attend a wedding near by. The room was lovely, decorated to high standard and clean. The bed was very comfy and the room was equipped with a kettle, TV, hairdryer and ironing board. Breakfast offered a vast range of choice, with a cooked breakfast available as well as a range of continental options. The bar was also great, if not a tad on the pricey side but as you would expect with a higher end hotel. The hotel was in a great location with quiet grounds yet only 25-30 minutes from Belfast, about £15 in a taxi. I would definitely stay here again if I was to visit the area.
I'm writing this because I have just received a reminder from the above hotel inviting us to book our Christmas lunch with them. It brought back depressing memories of sitting with our daughter, son and grandchildren sitting in what felt more like a warehouse than a restaurant, eating the worst dinner I had ever experienced, never mind Christmas. Let me talk you through it. We arrived in the reception area to discover there were no seats where we could sit together. When we did sit down the utterly charmless meeter and greeter offered us a choice of what I think was mulled wine or a soft drink. There was nothing festive or charming about the welcome. In the dining hall we were shown to our designated table in the large function room. The only nod to Christmas was a singer who did have a lovely voice, singing along to recorded music with no one listening. We ordered wine. The wine did not come and the waiter disappeared from sight. When our ghastly starters arrived, my daughter walked the full length of the room to find a member of staff to bring the wine. The main course arrived, as did eventually the wine, served by a hapless waiter, and we looked in horror at the revolting and trust me I do mean revolting, mess in our plates. They had obviously been passed down a conveyor belt with every item identical to the previous plate, the roast potatoes sitting together proudly in a stack. And the turkey, was it turkey? on top of the slimy, tasteless ham was inedible! The children refused to eat and it was too difficult to argue. The kid's meals were disgraceful. The pudding which followed was pathetic and tasteless. How on earth can a kitchen full of supposedly professional chefs produce such sub standard excuses for dinners? The reason we had decided to eat out on Christmas Day was because two of my sons were out of the country and we believed, in our naivety that it would be a more festive occasion for our 6 and 9 year old grandchildren. The first thing Leila said to me when we sat down was 'Granny, I don't like this place.' Oh, how right she was! I am a good cook, I state that as a fact, and I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone there could have praised their experience that day. They must never have enjoyed succulent turkey, home made stuffing, crisp golden roast potatoes and juicy sausages, to mention but a few festive ingredients. The management should seriously look at themselves and ask if they would subject their own families to such seasonal meals. The front of house should go back to retrain in good manners (she was ghastly) and whoever is responsible for seasonal decoration should visit the Hasting Hotel Group. Oh yes, I should add those hotels were booked out and the Clandeboye Lodge was the only place with vacancies. And the cost? £90 per head. A small price to pay to cover all the extra staff needed we thought. Wrong! So, if you wonder why I haven't written to complain before now, the honest answer was I had shingles in the month of January and hadn't the energy needed to go into it all. After that I chose to try and forget. But please, if you're considering this venue for December 25th 2017, please, please don't waste your money. Look at Hastings first (if they still have vacancies. I shall be cooking with enormous pleasure for my family and friends in a home suitably decorated and with my husband acting as chief carver and wine waiter. We have Christmas memories to replace.
Travelling around for business I have spent a few nights away from home and Clandeboye Lodge has always been a favourite. I've always found it quiet, with lovely comfortable rooms, and fantastic staff who cannot do enough to make the stay a good one. The restaurant serves wonderful food too. I've stayed here several times over a number of years, and never been disappointed.
We had our wedding reception here as this was where we met 4 years ago at a friends wedding and I knew from then how good it was as a wedding reception venue. The staff were very helpful and friendly, from our initial meeting looking at dates right through until the day itself. The food is always superb, a good menu selection to choose from and the service is excellent. Our guests praised the evening buffet as well as the dinner. The grounds and garden are perfect for wedding photos and there is a lovely outside seating area at the back, inside is also a stunning backdrop for wedding photos. The bedrooms are comfortable and modern. Also we were the only wedding on our day which really sold it for us. I would highly recommend the Clandeboye Lodge to any Bride & Groom looking for the perfect venue for their wedding!
We Stayed one night in July for a relaxing break. Have stayed many times before and love this hotel. Staff are lovely and friendly & dinner was amazing, especially the deconstructed cheesecake (although prefer the white chocolate or banoffee one). The Bed was extremely comfortable & we cannot wait for a return visit.
Went here for a good friends wedding reception. Nice grounds, friendly and professional staff, great service and excellent food. Cannot recommend highly enough, great place for a wedding reception and most of their custom comes from couples where one or more more of the wedding party have been here as a guest!
Absolutely stunning hotel, lovely staff, great food, beautiful rooms. I cannot fault this place. we loved it, the breakfast was beautifully presented and plenty of it. The rooms were equipped with everything we needed. We will be back.
I cannot thank Andrea and her team enough for the wonderful time she gave to our family birthday celebration. As hostess of the event she was reassuring, comforting and caring in a most efficient manner, and I am truly grateful. All the guests enjoyed their meals greatly. All in all, 5 star are truly deserved. Thanks again Andrea! Joan, Holywood
