Villas Rio Mar is a comfortable hotel on the river. The villas are located in its large landscaped hillside grounds. Our villa was quite high up but was very quiet. The Hotel had an excellent swimming pool which was popular with guests. Dinner was good but breakfast was the poorest we had on our entire Costa Rican trip. Very little choice with some of the dishes lukewarm. Surely they can do better?
We love this place, everything here is beyond magnificent, it combines great service and high quality on structure of rooms, pool, restaurant and common areas as playground, gardens, mini golf area and tennis court, it even has a nice and mysterious trail that goes up and deep into a beautiful mountain. We really enjoyed the pool area, is big enough to swim free with more people and do not feel like if you are on a crowded and small pool, also and I really should mention how quite and clean our room was, I really loved it and which to come again soon, is absolutely a must to go on the south of Costa Rica.
Ambiance around pool spoilt by loud music. Seemed down market. Ordered breakfast to go as was going out early . Poor result. Asked for a better one next day due to early excursion. Asked for a hard boiled egg and bread. After some negotiation the night before. ....that is exaclty what we got. An egg,dry bread and nothing else! Expected to have some fruit and a drink carton. Shower in room poor and in need of repair.
Good, clean room, king size bed was great, twin less so, nice deck with sink and fridge. Really beautiful site with many birds, iguanas, etc. good food, too. We enjoyed our stay. Very close to town and other restaurants.
I treat myself to a good dinner once a week at the restaurant at Rio Mar. From the time I walk in I am greeted by a smiling staff. Carol and Neilson are there on the ready to take my drink and food order. I have never been disappointed by the food. The kitchen staff is a well oiled machine and are obviously concerned they get it right. My favorite is the tenderloin steak. Definitely the best steak in this area.
We stayed here 6 years ago, loved it, and were a bit disappointed with it this time. Room not terribly clean, floors not swept. All amenities are there, however, our room this time was near the pool and we were treated to horrid music all day long even after asking for it to be lowered. Breakfast was pretty awful...who can screw up scrambled eggs? We do enjoy the open-air porch with sink and fridge. Good sized t.v. Beautiful gardens.
Nice spacy room with clean bathroom. Airco. Good breakfast and diner. Nice pool with pool bar. Close to Dominical which has a great beach and a relaxed atmosphere. Great for golf surfing. We loved it!
Beautiful very large garden like property, with very nice mature landscaping. Big pool with a swim-up bar and very nice tennis courts. Extremely nice staff very helpful and polite. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. They do need to work on their wi-fi in the rooms.
We tried to book directly with the hotel but they wanted to charge us $158 per night when it was listed as $140 on their website. They suggested we book on-line which we did. We made the reservation the same day that we arrived to check in. We intended on staying 3 nights but after spending one night there we had to check out. The room was very run down and had a strong smell of mold or sewer. Many of the windows were solid glass and we could not open them to air out the room. It did have an air-conditioner unit which we turned on but it was loud and seemed to pump more moisture into the room. When we checked out the next morning at 7:30am we explained that we had a hard time breathing and it even triggered my asthma so we could not stay there. They charged us for 2 nights and said it was not their fault that the room did not smell good. They said they did us a favor because they should have charged us for 3 nights. They gave us a credit for one night if we wanted to come back but we explained that would not be possible since we can not breathe in the rooms. It was not a very good experience. Luckily we found another great location with better views, great upgraded cabins, friendly staff and for half the price in another section of Dominical. With all of the options to stay in Dominal this would be the very last place we would choose.
We stayed here for a few nights after Christmas in peak season. I was a little worried that the hotel would feel crowded, but we were pleasantly surprised. It was peaceful, quiet, and there was still always a chair by the pool and a table at breakfast. As many have said, the grounds were absolutely lovely. We saw many birds and animals without leaving the hotel. The room was OK. It was a bit outdated, especially the bathroom, it wasn't perfectly clean, but the beds were very comfortable and the junior suite had plenty of room for 3 people. The pool temperature was perfect, and when there was someone there, the bar was a nice feature. Breakfast was pretty darn good (although I found a hair in the food, yuck). We only had dinner there one night, but that was pretty good as well. We loved that there was the river right there and it was an easy walk to town and the beach. At night, the walk was much better lit than I thought it would be, but still bring a light so cars can see you better. Dominical itself was charming. Plenty of restaurant options and a rocky, but uncrowded beach. We also did two day trips, Corcovado and the horseback riding to the waterfall. Both were great and arranged by the hotel. Really my only major complaint was that I had trouble changing our reservation when I first made it. I tried online and via email and didn't get any response for quite a while after multiple attempts. Be sure to double check your dates when you make the reservation on their site, if you change one date, it automatically changes the other date.
