I have a ton of friends that have visited Costa Rica. Everyone had a different opinion of where to stay. Many suggested Manuel Antonio, which is precisely why we avoided it. And then I found Villa Alturas on TripAdvisor. I'm SO glad we stayed here. The area is charming, beautiful and very laid back. The villas are perched on top of a beautiful, scenic spot atop. Yes, you need a 4x4 to get to the villas, but that only added to the family adventure. The staff at Villa Alturas is beyond accommodating. Lauren and Anna held our hand on all of our planning, and Franko and Maria made us feel special every time we saw them. The food is absolutely amazing. Worth every penny (unlike many overpriced hotels). The chef is a remarkable talent. I honestly think we'll see her on the Food Network one of these days soon. I can't recommend this place more highly.
The staff at Villas Alturnas have out done them self’s in every way. A team of truly passionate individuals makes for a truly authentic experience. I love the message of this special place. They also run a nonprofit animal sanctuary protecting and rehiblatating Costa Rician wildlife while teaching the importance of keeping wild animals wild. You can book your tour through the reception desk. I reccomend booking the ture that includes lunch at Tierra Verda Bistro where you will find a variety of delicious fish, vegetarian and plant based dishes. Ivette, Lauren and Alice have elivated this already magical property along with the rest of the staff. An amazing stay from start to finish.
Just left Villas Alturas which has the most spectacular views of the majestic expansive Pacific Ocean. Gazing out while drinking the delicious coffee (very important) and enjoying the included, made with care, breakfast was a pleasure. To get to this view you need to take a very steep bumpy dirt road but this is common place in Dominical. The Villas are spacious, the sheets luxuriously soft, and rocking in the rocking chairs, peaceful. Thank you Tom for accommodating our special request- first class.
We had a great stay at villa Alturas! The room was lovely and spacious with a little kitchen. The view from the room and the pool/restaurant area was outstanding! Staff were super friendly! Hard to access without a car as taxis are expensive
We booked Villas Alturas from a recommendation from Rachel from Pineapple Tours in Dominical! Boy, we were not disappointed! This place is gorgeous! We stayed in a very comfortable 2 bedroom villa. It was clean and tidy. The villa had a very private front porch overlooking the flora, fauna and amazing Pacific Ocean! We were glad to have our own kitchen-not that we really used it. The food at Tierra Verde was top notch for breakfast each morning! Who could complain about homemade bread for French toast with a view of the Pacific Ocean??? The tapas served there were terrific too! Definitely try the macadamia crusted calamari steaks- so good! Can’t say enough good things about this place!
We were greeted right away after a drive from the airport, they took our bags and immediately escorted us to our Villa to relax. No complaints at all one word describes it relaxing. Villas Alturas is a place if you are looking to be stress free in a wonderful ocean view setting. It is top notch with great people all around. The service and help we received was fantastic. Note: Special thanks to all the kitchen staff, and the food / drinks all wonderful. Muchas Gracias to the Owner & all the Staff and people of Villas Alturas Familia, Esteban & Renee
Tom, Maria, Lauren, Alice, and Tom's entire team treated us very, very well during our two night stay. The Villa #1 was everything we could've asked for, and the beds were extremely comfortable especially compared to other places we stayed during the week. The view is truly one of a kind. We saw whales from our balcony! The morning coffee is fantastic and the breakfast is very tasty. We did the sanctuary tour, (for a second time), and we were very glad that we did. Tom and his staff are very passionate about their work, and he has an excellent perspective on the way life should be lived and how we should treat each other, our animal friends, and the planet. Our one and ONLY complaint, and this is probably outside of the resort's control, was that there was one drunken degenerate staying as a guest at the resort who sat at the bar each day from sun up until sundown. Think Norm from Cheers, but 100 times more surly, and 1,000 times more unpleasant. In our observations, he had a negative impact on every single other guest at the resort. Again, I'm not sure what the resort could've done about this as it is probably outside of their control. The Jolly Roger is very close by and it has the best chicken wings we've ever had in our entire lives. You might want to add an extra mile to your daily jog on the Playa Dominicalito (beach) in order to 'earn' the right to eat them though. All in all, we had a fantastic time, and really appreciate the five star attention we received from the Tom and all of the team at Villas Alturas! We can't wait to come back. Pura Vida!
We visited the hotel last weekend. The location is amazing, with a great view towards the ocean and the Whales Tail (Uvita). All the staff was super welcoming and friendly. Check-in took 2 minutes. The 1 room villa is very big and fully equipped. There is only 1 AC unit at the main bedroom, and only 1 TV at the living room. Very clean and comfortable beds. Food was amazing. Friday pizza night, seafood on saturday. The chef is one of a kind, he took some time to ask what we liked and offered to prepare custom made dishes.... Cocktails are very good and not expensive. Breakfast was included and had more than 5 options to choose from.... try the burrito!!! We took the sanctuary tour, guided by the resident vet.. who was very kind and explained everything for almost 2 hours. Our car was not 4WD, so we had some trouble going uphill, but we made it! Best place to relax and have some peace family time. Will definitely come back!
This review was written originally in June of 2017, shortly after our stay at this resort. Somehow my review got published under a different name so I am resubmitting it here. The passage of several months has not diminished my high appraisal of Villa Alturas. I will add one thing, though: their T-shirts, while of decent quality, run very small. The XL I purchased even looked small initially and after washing and drying was much closer to a M. My wife is enjoying it even though it was meant for me. I originally thought my review would be somewhat long as there is so much good to say about this place. Please see other recent reviews (cayennev8 May 2, 2017 e.g.). Also dbinfl June, 2017 - I was part of the same group) who say it well and thoroughly. I'll only add that I don't see how you can go wrong staying here. From the surroundings to the staff this place is first-rate. My only suggestion is that they add air-conditioning to the entire rental unit. I would pay more for that, yet this turned out to be of minor concern. The entire place is clean and charming. Tom, the owner, has assembled a very competent and gracious staff who deliver an experience that will be remembered. None in my group would hesitate to return or recommend Villas Alturas for your Costa Rica holiday. Show less Room Tip: Room 3 is the premier 1 BR casa. Unobstructed view. All rooms are good. Stayed: June 2017, traveled with family
Words cannot properly express how amazing Villas Alturas is! You need to experience it for yourself! From the views, to the rooms, to the incredibly friendly and helpful staff, to the food, everything was more than we could of hoped for. My husband and I traveled with two children, 14 and 9, and loved the spaciousness of the 2-bedroom villas. The king-sized beds were super comfortable with great linens. The villa's kitchen was well stocked down to the smallest, most thoughtful detail (e.g., Tupperware so you can pack lunches for day trips) and the views from the private patios were so breathtaking it was almost surreal...all for the cost of what we'd pay for a basic, chain hotel stay back in the States! The location was also perfect. We rented a SUV (DON'T use Budget...they're an absolute nightmare...ask Villas Alturas to book for you) and enjoyed the Dominical/Uvita area immensely. We also visited the onsite wildlife sanctuary and were amazed by the thought and care that goes into that venture as well. Kudos to Tom for wanting to give back. He's built an amazing resource for the region (e.g., rescuing and rehabilitating animals that were hit by cars, kept as household pets, etc.). Lastly, we went during the rainy season and, prior to our arrival, I checked the weather and saw thunderstorms everyday (which made me freak out just a bit!). It did rain every day, but not until the late afternoon/evening and all day was gorgeous. Honestly, by the time it rained, we were all so tired from the day's activities that we didn't really care! Overall, Villas Alturas exceeded all our expectations and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic Costa Rican experience. It's a true jungle adventure and Villas Alturas is the perfect "home-base." Go here. Book the trip. You won't regret it!
