Just returned from a two nights for one stay at the George Hotel, have to say we thoroughly enjoyed it.We were made very welcome on our arrival, given a very nice room,(3) beautifully appointed, and lovely toiletries in the bathroom. Whilst the menu for the main restaurant was not exciting, and seemed a bit expensive,we enjoyed the bar menu on the first night, and enjoyed it. Other reviews mention the staff, yes, there are certain staff for some tasks, and the reception staff man the bar, there were only about three other rooms occupied during our stay,so this was not an issue, and they were very friendly. There is a secure car park, and the 5% service charge is clearly listed. Although room 3 is at the front we never found the traffic noise an issue,if complete silence is required, stay out in the country. One minor thing is that you can not open a window in the room, which could counter act the noise, but sometimes a bit of fresh air is appreciated. The hotel is well situated to visit a wide range of places easily, and would certainly visit again.
We had Sunday lunch in Jan 18, we had an unplanned visit and decided to go in as we walked past. The staff were helpful and we were seated in minutes The food was great quality and well presented, it was well priced for the standard, £25 for 2 courses with a soft drink and water Overall a lovely meal in lovely surroundings
The George has an excellent restaurant. The rooms, whilst good was not great. After a long drive, the room was a good size and well appointed but the tea and coffee facilities did not include any biscuits. However, the bedside cabinet draw did have lots of biscuit crumbs in it. The bathroom was good but reasonably clean but overall it felt like housekeeping was a bit poor. It didn't really justify such a high room tarif. Such a shame as the food in the restaurant was exceptionally good.
What a lovely, friendly hotel. We enjoy staying at the George every time we visit Sheffield, which is only ten miles away. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. And the food is excellent. We'll be back!
We took advantage of the Sunday evening offer and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The service provided was first class and friendly. We paid the extra and had a Superior Room, which might be described as a mini-suite, with separate sitting area / TV. The afternoon tea comprised very nice, freshly heated scones with clotted cream & jam. We were asked if we wished to take the free glasses of champers with the afternoon tea, but nicely steered towards having them as a pre-dinner aperitif, which we did. Both dinner and breakfast were well presented and very tasty. It was nice that breakfast is served until 11am, which allowed us a relaxing start to the day ahead. Other reviews have referenced the 5% service charge which is levied on the total bill. The hotel literature made this charge very clear so we accounted for it when deciding to book our stay. We would like to thank everyone at the hotel who had some involvement in making our stay so very nice a big 'thank you'. We will most certainly be returning.
Stayed overnight on Saturday in room 4 which overlooks the frontage of the hitel. The room is beautifully furnished and the bed is extremely comfortable. All aspects were first class. Fantastic breakfast on the Sunday and overall a faultless stay. Would thoroughly reccomend for anyone staying in the area.
We had a gorgeous room, very comfortable, lovely decor and quiet. A plus point was having normal sized toiletries in the bathroom (I hate miniature toiletries that run out too quickly) and there was plenty of coffee too! Dinner in the restaurant was perfect, great food and wonderful service. Breakfast was not as good, it seemed like the staff were rushed, not a glimmer of a smile and the food was not on a par with what we had experienced the night before sadly, the offering and portions just seamed a bit mean. But this would not stop us from visiting again.
The ambience is good and olde worlde, but the food and service could be better. There are plenty of staff / managers wondering around, but nobody chose to wipe our dirty table before serving our food. The food was OK but not outstanding; the mozzarella & basil salad had very little of each and the ploughmans was served with no chutney. Needs a good shake up.
Spent a couple of nights here, wanting to take in some of the local sights after a gap of several years. The food was excellent. The room quite good, but a bit over warm - could do with aircon. The owner was keen to introduce himself which I found nice. A characterful building and friendly staff - though from reading other reviews here, not to everyone's taste. I was made to feel welcome and enjoyed the place.
We know the George hotel for years and we were always very happy customers. This time it was disappointing. In room 1 there's a lot of black mould close to the window. We stayed in the room with our toddler and I found it quite disturbing because it's not a healthy environment. We have complaint twice with the receptionist and a 3rd time with the owner. They never came back to us. At check out I complaint again and the answer was the room service is informed but we can't do anything about it in short term. Not very understanding and very disappointing. Food and service was otherwise excellent.
