Cosy coastal retreat - 148 Middle Street
Tucked away in the heart of Deal’s charming conservation area, The Old Smoke House is a characterful cottage, perfect for couples or small families looking to escape to the Kent coast. This centuries-old cottage is full of quirks and charm, with original features, painted floorboards and cosy corners that make it feel like a home away from home.
Downstairs is a living room with a cosy wood burner for chilly evenings, a pretty wallpaper dining area and a small but well-equipped kitchen for relaxed holiday cooking. French doors from the kitchen lead to the sunny and private rose-walled garden, perfect for morning coffee or a glass of wine after a day of exploring. On the first floor is a light and inviting twin bedroom and a family bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. On the second floor is the double bedroom, which has a lovely view over the rooftops and gardens of Middle Street and out to the sea beyond. Your four legged friend is very welcome.
The location couldn't be better, just a minute’s walk from Deal’s pebble beach and promenade, where you can stroll along the seafront with old fishing boats or take in the views from the end of the pier. The town itself is full of independent shops, bars and restaurants. Browse the antiques at Mileage, pick up some gifts from Barkend, grab a fresh sourdough loaf from Arno & Co and vegetables from Merchant of Relish and enjoy dinner at The Blue Pelican, Frog & Scot or Victuals.
There’s plenty to explore nearby too. Walk south along the coast to Kingsdown, past beach huts and pastel coloured seafront houses and Walmer Castle, a former home of the Queen Mother. Further afield, the mediaeval town of Sandwich offers quiet riverside walks and traditional pubs. Or hop on a train to Canterbury to visit the famous Cathedral.
If you are looking for a truly British seaside day out, Broadstairs is just a short drive away with its sandy beaches and ice cream parlours. The trendy town of Margate is also nearby, home to the Turner Contemporary and the retro amusement park Dreamland.
Ground floor Entrance into the sitting room Upon entering the property you step into the entrance hall leading into the sitting room, housing a wood burner, TV, a large three seater sofa and a comfortable winged-chair.
Dining area A step down takes you into a light extendable dining room with seating for six and a large window overlooking the pretty garden at the rear.
Kitchen A new, well equipped, kitchen with an electric oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave and a cream Smeg fridge which has a small icebox. Wooden worktops and baskets give it a cottage-y feel with two dressers housing all the pretty crockery.
First floor From the sitting room there is a door which opens to a winding staircase taking you to the:
Twin bedroom A good-sized bedroom at the front of the house with two large single beds that can also be zipped together to make another double if required. Built in cupboards house plenty of hanging space.
Bathroom Step down from the landing into a large bathroom in the eaves at the back of the property with a lovely rolltop bath and a large drench shower over. There is also an airing cupboard housing the washing machine and boiler in this room.
Second Floor A lovely light double bedroom in the eaves with sea views to one side and views of the street on the other. Again this bedroom has been beautifully decorated and has built in cupboard space for clothes.
Garden There is a very sweet little courtyard garden, with table and chairs for up to 4 guests to sit outside. There is also a side gate so you can access Middle Street directly.
Parking There is no direct parking at the house, but there is free parking very nearby along Sandown Road or College Road. There is also parking along the seafront.
Accessibility The cottage is very classic of a fisherman's cottage, and so the stairs are very steep. The bathroom and bedrooms are located on the first and second floor, via wooden stairs with a rope handrail attached to the wall.

Lovely and well-located
Very pretty and comfortable and on a lovely street handy for the seafront and high st. My twin room had two good-sized beds and didn't remotely feel like a 'kid's room'. The only bad point was that we couldn't get any hot water out of the overhead shower, but we managed with the hand-held one.

A great short break at the Old Smokehouse
We had a great break at the Old Smokehouse with the bonus of plenty of spring sunshine. We loved the character of the property and it is very comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. The team at Keepers Cottage were helpful as always, letting us have a late checkout. I had not factored in that the clocks were changing on our departure day and we lost an hour! There are steep stairs in the property and some low door frames, just to be aware.

Enchanting Cottage!
We have stayed in Deal a number of times over the last few years, and this lovely cottage
was the best place we have been to. Very close to the sea (which can be seen from the main bed-room at the top) but equally close to this wonderful seaside town. Stylishly but sympathetically done up, and beautifully modernised, the cottage had all the things we were looking for - a wood-burning stove, a bathroom with a great bath and a good location. Deal - even for a wintry weekend in November - was as lovely and friendly as ever. Great Christmas shopping in nearby Canterbury. Our only concern is that other Londoners may discover Deal and head down there in increasing numbers...!

sweet cottage but exterior rather neglected
A sweet cottage in a good location. Generally well-equiped. Small welcome gift appreciated.
However, customers need to know about low beams in living area _ quite a hazard. Outside space very neglected and full of weeds. Outside furniture rusty and uninviting and could be the cause of grazed legs, although cushions are provided. General waste bin had not been emptied for weeks. Had to contact customer service, who then organised removal promptly. No information about recycling or waste collection days in cottage information folder. Previous visitors' used towels uncollected in bathroom. Attic room windows need attention - have to be either closed or fully wide open as no catch to allow a small opening. Blinds blow and bang. Curtains might work better.
Wir hatten eine schöne Zeit in dem niedlichen Cottage. Alles was man braucht ist da. Deal ist total schön und wir haben die täglichen Strand Spaziergänge sehr genossen.
This is a quirky old cottage situated in a beautiful and quiet part of Deal, very close to the beach and cycling/walking opportunities. We enjoyed many walks, cycle rides and swims as a result.
We enjoyed our stay and were not too fazed by the steep stairs and low ceilings as we were expecting them.
In general the cottage is well equipped and comfortable - lovely bath, soft bedding and towels and a good supply of kitchen equipment. Items such as washing machine and dishwasher have been cleverly incorporated into the limited space in the cottage. The top bedroom in particular is a lovely space, with the bonus of a delightful sea view.
The notable exception in terms of comfort was the sofa as the seat cushions have been replaced by large feather pillows that soon flatten out onto the frame. It really was deeply uncomfortable after about 5 minutes of initial comfort. This can be easily remedied I'm sure by replacing the sofa or seat cushions. We would stay here again if this issue was resolved.
We very much appreciated the speedy response from Keeper's Cottages when we contacted them with a couple of queries early on.
Beautiful period cottage, carefully modernised and just a stone’s throw from the sea, near to great pubs, shops, cliff walks, plus the excellent rail link. We enjoyed being car free!
We loved the sea view from the top bedroom, dazzling in the morning, and the patio for breakfast. Hot sunny weather and daily sea swims were icing on the cake.

Shabby chic, emphasis on shabby
So lucky with the weather in Deal….. cottage rather disappointing. There is limited head room in several areas - couldn’t stand up in the double bedroom ! The furniture and fittings are exhausted and the cottage felt grubby throughout - shame ……

Great place to stay
Absolutely love this house. We rented it for 5 weeks and enjoyed every moment. Great location, bags of character, and in generally good condition. Few niggles - it needs new crockery and the knives are blunt, but overall highly recvommended.

A lovely cottage, but a few issues with equiptment.
We had a lovely stay in Deal and the cottage was very pretty and historic, but we found the low ceilings and spiral stair case a bit challenging.
