Southern Sun Dar es Salaam

We had a party of 7 family members staying for one night after a flight from the uk before our flight into the bush the next morning. The hotel is clean and relatively modern. The check in was efficient and our rooms plenty big enough for a night stop over. The bar staff were attentive and the food in the restaurant was much better than I expected. Free wifi is a plus - and we had no problems with it dropping out whilst we were there. It took us about 40 minutes to get to the hotel from the airport

Lovely service after a long drive through Dar. Surrounded by peaceful botanical gardens, overlooking the small but refreshing pool, where we swam under the moon and southern stars, watching flying foxes. Best food we had on our holiday in Tanzania with scrumptious breakfast buffet. Quiet comfortable luxurious rooms meant we left refreshed and happy. Recommend a stay here near the centre

This hotel is located in the relatively quiet old colonial centre of Dar-es-Salaam, walking distance from the ferry terminals to Kigamboni and Zanzibar, and to the Fish market. It is not too big, with one restaurant / snack bar, which has a simple menu. The service is a times slow (as in almost all places in Dar-es-Salaam), but very friendly and helpful. I would stay here again.

This was our last stop after over two weeks in Kenya and Tanzania. The room was typical of those you would find in Europe as far as size, but it had everything we needed, including free wi-fi that always worked well and hot water. We had casually mentioned when we booked that we were there on our honeymoon. The staff had obviously all been made aware of this. We were told congratulations upon checking in and complimentary champagne and roses were brought to our room the first night - it was a truly welcoming surprise. The breakfast each morning was superb with cook to order eggs or omelettes and tons of fresh fruit and baked goods The happy hour service was also very good, we really enjoyed that the gin and tonic is served in separate glasses so we controlled the strength. The location of the hotel was also perfect, right next to the botanical gardens, and a 20 minute taxi ride to the Slipway area to catch a ferry to Bongoyo or enjoy drinks while catching the sunset.

Would like to commend the hotel for very high levels of service by the team throughout the hotel. Rooms were comfortable and reasonably priced. The restaurant offers a good hearty menu for dinner. Breakfast is limited in selection but offers good quality food.

We stayed for three nights and although the initial impression was that the room was a little on the small side maybe that was due to the hotels we had stayed in during the trip so far. The Southern Sun is well located for the city centre and the food (we sampled breakfast, lunch & dinner) while not a culinary sensation was totally acceptable and reasonably priced by Dar hotel standards. For old times sake we visited the Kilimanjaro (now the Hyatt) where the entrance lobby and refreshments area is far more impressive but the rooms are apparently a similar size to the Southern Sun so is that worth an extra $100 per night? So in summary, good location, good friendly helpful staff, food OK and by Dar standards reasonably priced.

I stayed overnight for a business trip and this was my second time staying here. The services are great and the food is very good. Staff are courteous and WiFi works fine. In general its a good choice in Dar es Salaam, and i will stay here again due to value for money.

We had a stop over in Dar en route to Arusha and stayed at Southern Sun hotel. Rooms were clean, showers were hot and good water pressure, breakfast buffet was solid and we appreciated that it opened at 4am since we were jet lagged. Airport transfer was also easy.

The room is well-appointed, wifi worked perfectly, bed was very comfortable and the shower hot. Breakfast begins at 4 am which worked out perfectly as my animal safari tour left very early. My extra luggage was safely stored. Buffet breakfast had many choices and eggs are made to order. Dinner is equally great. The menu is varied, service is excellent and the dining room pleasant. Staff is friendly, personable and very helpful, especially Abdullah. I wish more hotels were like this.

The hotel is great looking, looks clean & the staff made me feel at home for the 6 weeks I was there. The breakfast buffet was my favorite, always fresh & delicious. What disappointed me was the bed bugs that bit me multiple times. The hotel manager was busy trying to get rid of them so big ups. I'd stay there anytime again!
