DoubleTree by Hilton Dar es Salaam - Oyster Bay4.0 out of 5.0

The service was good, staff very friendly, I arrived so early but I was given a room upon arrival at 11am without questions and I was given the opportunity to select a room of my choice, and yes, the I was given 2-warm cookies, the room was cool and clean.
I spent two nights here in March, and then a third night unintentionally. The Doubletree by Hilton is quite basic upon arrival - the reception is typical, as are the rooms - the same regardless of whether you are in Dar or Dubai or London. However when you go outside, you have a wonderful pool area, and flowers everywhere. The reception staff are incredibly welcoming and they gave me some juice and a homemade (still warm) cookie on arrival and checkout. The pool is huge, there is a pool bar and seating overlooking Oyster Bay. It was a wrench to leave here, but I was lucky to have a weekend stay, so could relax by the pool. The mojito's are legendary! Staff are mostly attentive and helpful. When my plans were changed at the last minute, I was able to book a third night easily enough. There is a decent restaurant, and the breakfast buffet included the freshest fruit and young coconut to drink from the shell. My only comment is that the staff here were extremely rigid - I was late for breakfast, and asked whether I could come and just grab a banana and a coffee to eat outside in the sunshine. There was a lovely waiter, who helped me, but another one ran after me and said that I couldn't leave the restaurant - even though they were trying to clear up after breakfast. I felt embarrassed and rushed, and could not understand why, when I wasn't taking cutlery, I could not drink my coffee and coconut, and eat my banana outside. You should allow an hour to get to the airport. Uber is fine here, and much cheaper than the hotel car company, but you can negotiate on price. I am back in Dar in September, and would like to come back and stay here. Hopefully the breakfast rules may be relaxed.
If I could give a review just for the staff, I would give five stars. The staff was professional, friendly, polite, and helpful. The housekeeper did a super job. The front desk person was helpful, even at 3am when I checked in. Check out with smooth. The room service person and bartender at the bar by the water were all great. However, the hotel itself is just average, and the sleep quality was terrible. There were noises every night, in the middle of the night, with people in the hallway at 2am and 3am shouting and furniture being dragged above my room at 6, 7, 8am on a Sunday. I have no idea what was going on any of those times, but it was miserable. It is a good thing I travel with ear plugs. I will also say the bed is super hard, which is rather uncomfortable to me. The sheets and towels seemed worn, and the shower did not drain properly. The good things about the room included a powerful AC, strong water pressure, and good hot water. Honestly, I may have to stay here again as I travel back for business, but I am going to try other hotels in the area. I have been told this is the best place in that specific area, but I am willing to risk it for a quieter and more comfortable night's sleep somewhere else. I would suggest you do the same.
Friendly and prompt service. Hearty welcome. Clean tranquil reception. service excellence. outstanding value for money. Spacious room with a fantastic view. Personal interaction. Superb culinary experience. Enough said!
Had a stay at DoubleTree Hilton hotel. The place is very nice and the poolside area is a jewel in the crown. The sitting near the sea is a unique experience the hotel provides. The food is rightly priced with good quality. Loved the chocolate cookie offered at reception on arrival. Value for money in Dar compared to other available hotels in Dar.
Dear Mr. Mc Lachlan, I would like to heartily express my sincere appreciation and compliments to your staff who showed exemplary professionalism and hospitality over the many weeks I’ve stayed at the Double Tree since April this year. Working away from home often presents business travelers certain discomforts and inconveniences when not in their own environment but this I’m glad to say was never felt during my time spent at your hotel in Dar es Salaam. This is greatly due to the wonderful welcome and personal attention given by your staff every day during my stay. Many of whom went out of their way to ensure I was well looked after and carefully attended to any requests made. I would like to mention a few names in particular who truly stood out and whose professional standard was very much appreciated. • Breakfast Room Staff: Revina, Isaac, Ibrahim and Frank.Y who were always very kind and welcoming and never over imposing and of course Francis Joseph who make an excellent omelette and perfect pancakes! – Well done indeed! • To Housekeeping staff and in particular Ms. Mwanahamisi who was very meticulous about cleanliness and gave great attention to detail. Much appreciated. • To Niama who was very gracious and helpful despite being under pressure at the front desk. • But in particular I would like to give my compliments to Nuru who attended the Lobby & Bar area, whose friendly and charming smile won the hearts of all the customers she attended to. She was always very welcoming and made every request a VIP priority which was really appreciated. She actually went out of her way during her time off to find a particular item as a favor and never asked for a penny in return!!!! So I must give my heart felt congratulations to Nuru for an excellent JOB WELL DONE !!! With Compliments, Yours Sincerely Mr. Neal D Room 702
I was there to have lunch. They have a superb restaurant from where you can watch the sea. They have superb selection of dishes. We had sandwiches, pizza, French fries, coffee & drinks. Drinks included Bailey's coffee liquer. Efficient service.
I LOVE this hotel. What makes it one of my favorite places in the wold to stay is the quality of the people. From Ian, the General Manager, to Hassan the concierge, to every single person who works at the front desk (Dr. Caroline!), to the maids who clean the rooms, to the people who work at the cafe in the lobby and at the bar by the pool, these are all exceptional people. When you travel a lot, and you are by yourself away from your family for long stretches of time, to find a hotel like this is a true gift. It makes traveling less burdensome, and gives you some joy just because you know how good the experience will be. To all of the people who work at the Doubletree Oyster-bay, I just want to say THANK YOU!!!
I enjoyed the service here, beautiful hotel with African soul. From the 1st day til last. The staff is friendly. The food is good and the hotel is very clean and you feel secure. The breakfast were always good.
Got an upgrade to Sea facing room and that was a great treat as I was staying for a week. Lounging by the pool is the best way to relax but it rained most of the time I was there. Slipway complex is just walking distance with a lot of nice vibes, shopping and restaurants.
