Grieves Cottage is a beautifully restored four-bedroom retreat designed for comfort, character, and relaxation. Sleeping up to eight guests, it offers four elegantly appointed en-suite bedrooms; two on the ground floor and two upstairs, each providing privacy and space. A ground-floor room includes a luxurious roll-top bath, while upstairs one ensuite features a bath and the other bedrooms include a modern cubicle shower.

A generous lounge with an inviting open fir creates the perfect setting for cosy evenings after exploring the estate. The large dining room offers a fantastic social setting, while a fully equipped modern kitchen opens directly onto a private garden, ideal for morning coffee or evening drinks. Blending traditional charm with thoughtful modern touches, Grieves Cottage is a welcoming haven for families, couples, and groups of friends.

Visitors can also wander the Woodland Walk, admire ancient beech and oak trees, spot red squirrels, and explore the atmospheric Tomb Wood. From April to September, the Backhouse Kitchen offers seasonal dishes made from estate-grown produce, homemade baking, and barista coffee.

Set within the historic Rossie Estate, the cottage sits only moments from the remarkable Walled Garden* at Backhouse Rossie, where every guest enjoys one free entry. Here you’ll also find a beautifully designed labyrinth, not a maze with branching paths, but a single, continuous route used since ancient times for reflection, renewal, and spiritual transformation. Medieval monks once walked labyrinths on their knees as an act of penance, symbolising the journey from burden to clarity. The estate’s long-standing tradition of storytelling adds an extra layer of charm: generations ago, brothers Thomas and James Backhouse created garden paths for a local museum whose zoo housed everything from a swan to a python, and even a “Big Bear” who was known to pull faces and chase visitors. Lonely for his family, he was eventually rehomed to London Zoo in 1831, where it was hoped a change of scenery might brighten his spirits.

Grieves Cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the Kingdom of Fife from the nearby Lomond hills, a filming location for “Outlander” and historic Falkland Palace to picturesque villages and iconic Scone and Glamis Castle gardens. Dundee’s historic harbour now developed for visitors and a delightful Botanic Garden plus a variety of eateries can be found across the River Tay estuary. The beaches and harbours of the East Neuk, along with the world famous golf heritage and sandy beaches of St Andrews, are a pleasant day trip. Edinburgh lies within easy reach, offering a wealth of history, culture, and world-class dining, making the cottage an exceptional base for coast, countryside, and city adventures.

The Walled Gardena and café are open from April to the last Sunday in September (except Tuesdays and Sundays).
