For the price, this accommodation works as its located near to night bazaars, riverbank and cafes/bars. The hotel is outdated/stucked in time and somewhat feels quiet though its a huge property. Very strict with number of people in the room. No hair dryer, iron and water heater in the room.
Ok, i'm not going to sugar coat this. It's not the best hotel in Chiang Mai by a stretch, however for a bunch of guys on an annual cricket tour, it's comfortable, the staff are friendly and willing. The rooms are dated and need modernising, however the rooms are clean and comfortable, and for the price amazing value for money. Breakfast included, free wifi for the 10 days. My 12th year at the Chiang Mai Sixes in April 2018 and we will stay at the Pornping Towers, our home away from home. Very close to the Night Bazaar and our team headquarters The Lotus Pub
The location is great, close to night bazaar, markets, tourist hub etc. Rooms need to be refurbished to be competitive with other accommodation offered in the area. Staff are helpful and genuinely try their best to assist hotel guest. Breakfast needs to have more variety and is ok if you're there for a short stay. Can be noisy at night with a band playing in the area. Although I was not bothered by the noise.
Position You really could not get a better position in Chiang Mai, within 2 mins of the night market and all the surounding resturants and bars, also well known in Chiang Mai, whilst we were there we visited all over and never had any problem getting back to the hotel, also near the river and other markets. I have read previous reviews about noise from the market however all music has to finish by midnight and we never found it to noisy. Facilities Chiang Mai unsurprisingly is very hot and humid, having a lovely swiming pool is a lifesaver. The roof bar is a great experience and the bar at the front is great for a beer or a coffee. Rooms Whilst obviously a little dated, with large keys, a shower over the bath and somewhat dated decor, the rooms are large air conditioned and cleaned well everyday. The beds are huge and comfortable. Good free Wi Fi. Breakfast Lovely friendly staff and a good choice at breakfast, a lovely member of staff even got us a lovely special cup of tea every day. Security One of the reassuring things about the Pornping was the safety and security. Security guards on duty 24 hours a day, we felt very safe in this hotel. Value For around £20 a night the Pornping offers fantastic value a cental hotel with fab pool and lovely staff.
All the other reviews that have that disappointed feeling in their reviews are correct. It's one of those rooms you book to sleep and mess around in. Not dirty but not clean it's so outdated it's laughable there is like one outlet to charge your phone and it's in the bathroom. So instead leave walk towards the market once u get to the open space take a left walk across the courtyard till ya hit the street turn left on the right side new boutique hotel think it's Night plaza it's AWESOME beautiful brand new no website as of July 2017 but great rooms try that instead
3 years since last visit and not much has changed. The hotel is still looking a bit tired but its cheap and very convenient for looking round Chiang Mai. Rooms are big and beds comfy. I had tea making facilities and free water which was unexpected. Showers good and there was a bath as well. Didn't have time for the pool but it looked good. Breakfast is ample and caters for all tastes. Lots of coach parties use this hotel due I suspect to its location. The night market which is a real experience is adjacent to the hotel. It rained one day and staff had no problem finding an umbrella to loan. Staff were really good and attentive. Wifi is good and free. So don't let the name put you off, its fine.
I stayed here 15 years ago and I'm not sure very much has changed. Rooms are big but fairly old fashioned, if you voted Brexit you'l love it. Our air con took a day to kick in, the first night was baking hot and the 2nd I was freezing. There's a distinctive smell of the 1980s- Taggart chain-smoking in the Little Chef hallway perhaps? The swimming pool was decent though he staff were a bit grumpy (perhaps because it was raining, the guys indoors were friendly). Even on the 9th floor we could hear the night market bands beneath. Perhaps this is a bonus if your ears don't work, you aim to fall out of the hotel onto the food court, or you love Thai covers of Adele, but for those of us who would like to sleep without the stuff of nightmares - bring earplugs... (This review might be a bit harsh, the hotel really is ok and we'll worth what we paid for it, and the staff were lovely.)
I feel bad honestly for being so negative because I feel sorry for the people that work at this hotel. There are plenty of good people who need their jobs, but ownership / management has let this hotel go to crap! The room was old and had mildew in the shower and bathroom. The carpets were filthy and need to be replaced not cleaned. They are beyond disgusting. The towels were frayed and too old which represents poor management and trying to milk this facility for every baht while putting nothing back into it. The breakfast was terrible (no taste and cold) and the coffee was nasty. I tried it a second morning then went to McDonalds after that because it was that bad. I gave this two stars because the people were nice and the location is perfect. I paid only 800 baht per night which is cheap but I believe the original price was 2,000 a night. Even at 800 I felt that the quality was pretty bad. We went in day trips which made it easier. My rate was non-refundable which is the only reason I stayed. This is a classic example of a nice hotel where the ownership has never put any profits aside for upkeep and renovations. The workers are nice but you can tell they are not happy working there. They are kind to the patrons though. I recommend you stay away from here unless you are on a budget.
the stay was nice, grand entrance with staff waiting to take your bags wich was lovely as we come from jungle huts up in Pai. on arrival in the room it was dusty and the seal and grout in bathroom was minging. pleasant room apart from that a little dated but for one night before catching a flight it is perfect.
The lobby is big, impressive and promising. But seeing the room is a huge disappointment. It's outdated. There is stains on the rugs and it's muschy and you can smell the mold. But it's clean. The shower is good. And I have to admit that is the most comfortable bed I have slept in since I arrived to Thailand. The pillow is excellent. I tried to buy one when I checked out but they where out of stock at the moment since a lot of people buy the pillows. The pool is clean and nice but the environment is a little boring to look at. The breakfast is ok, the Asian sections seems to be the best one. There is toast, yoghurt, eggs and even an omelette chef but still there is something missing. The location is great though. It's right behind the night bazaar. Conclusion. If you don't mind the outdated interior and the smell of mold and are longing for a soft bed this is the place. Otherwise I would recommend other better low budget hotel that actually are cheaper and nicer. One more thing. The staff was very nice and helpful. My appointed room had a smell of cigarette smoke and when I complained about that they immediately upgraded me to another room.
