Kempinski Hotel Chengdu5.0 out of 5.0

Plus side: breakfast. MINUS side: carpet (dirty and old), drapes (dirty, patched, holed), insulation (like any old fleabag). No, really not worth the name of Kempinsky. Very disappointing, to say the least
Very good and varied breakfast, with decent coffee (better than the average Chinese hotel). However, the carpet is pretty old, and doesn't seem that clean. And the drapes are totally unworthy of such a hotel, and certainly of the price charged for a room. Holes and patches badly sown on are only good for a flea bag in some red-light district, not for a hotel that bears the name "Kempinski"! No, not acceptable. And the many rusts spots in the tub should have been a signal long ago that something had to be done. Disappointing. And the walls/doors are too thin. My neighbor TV woke me up in the middle of the night (probably volume on high), and another night people arriving late and talking loudly in the hallway also ruined my sleep.
the rooms are clean but the hotel appears to be old, location ok, I tried to order room service and the staff can not speak English properly, no sauna....overpriced for the offering I would not recommend it
I use the Kempinski because of 2 reasons - the location is in walking distance from my office and the personnel on the VIP floor always make my visit special. They are always extremely happy and professional and it’s a joy to chat with them in the mornings during breakfast. Judith Huang is especially helpful and has assisted me with day to day questions I’ve had regarding Chengdu. The team on the VIP floor and the way Michael goes out of his way to make my stays more pleasurable is the reason I return every time to the hotel.
My partner and I visited Chengdu in January this year and we had an absolutly wonderful stay at the Kempinski. The room was very lovely (great shower), everybody was so warm and welcoming. The lady in Red did her utmost to help us with everything we asked for and she did a wonderful job. We had dinner int he hotel twice and it was amazing --> great food, very good service (goes for everybody). Again, it was a wonderful stay. Thank you.
My friend and I stayed here for eight nights to celebrate my birthday with my sons who live in Chengdu. The hotel is very stylish with a lovely Reception area, very grand. The hotel is also in a good location and a couple of minutes to the metro. Taxis are cheap and easy to get. Our room was not very spacious but housekeeping was excellent with good quality toiletry products provided and clean towels every day. On my birthday the hotel left a lovely little cake in our room with a cute little panda bear toy for me to keep as a momento. The breakfast was varied and good - catering for all and the restaurant was lovely. One thing which we were a little dubious about at first but which proved to be inconsequential was the 'Gentlemen's Club' which is situated on one of the lower floors . The hotel has an indoor swimming pool with an ice pool and hot water pool alongside which is really nice. My friend and I paid quite a hefty amount for a massage at the hotel but later went for a massage and cupping in a little local massage shop just round the corner which was just as good/if not better for a fraction of the price. I am travelling again to China in a few months and staying at another hotel but only because I like to try new things, not because I did not enjoy the Kempinski . I would recommend.
The room was very dark, there is no ceiling light in room; poor sound proof, I was on the 17th floor and woke up by the traffic noise in the morning. Good free WiFi, OK breakfast, good service; a German beer restaurant in the lobby is a bonus for me. Not so good location, there's not much within walking distance.
This hotel was like heaven sent..after 8 days Tour Chengdu-Daocheng-Yading....spacious clean room...smells so refreshing...5 stars rating...fantastic modern bathroom...international breakfast buffet that was also heavenly...amazingly waiter/waitresses converse in fluent English language👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
We spent 5 nights here and had a wedding ceremony on Stern Terrace. Right from when we arrived the service was exceptional. The room was nicely decorated and very spacious. The only issue we had was the air conditioning not working very well but they offered to move us to a different room or give us a fan as well. We had unpacked and didn't want to move so the fan worked just fine.
OK, it is a mixed feeling when writing this review. My overall rate is 3. First of all, the room was tired and when I say tired I mean everything should be renovated. Facilities were out of date and apparently lacked maintenance. Breakfast has never been attractive and this time it simply became worse. Service was not good as before and nobody took care of us for long time and choices of dishes were not so many. Fortunately pools were OK. There are in fact many alternatives in Chengdu and it would be more and more difficult for Kempinski to maintain its market share if rooms and service remain no change.
