Zhanjiang was one of the departure points on the Maritime Silk Road, an oceanic trading route that connected China with India, Africa, and Europe 1,400 years ago. The city was still a relatively small fishing village during the first half of the 20th century, but today it is one of China s busiest ports and has a population of more than six million. Fly to Zhanjiang for an opportunity to experience true Cantonese culture.
Zhanjiang Huguangyan National Geopark is just a 30-minute drive from Zhanjiang and features a shallow volcanic crater lake surrounded by rainforests and temples. Naozhou, a volcanic island on the north side of the entrance to Leizhou Bay, is the site of a lighthouse that offers a staggering panoramic view of the coastline and is famous for the crystal mirrors which make up part of the lamp.
You ll touch down at Zhanjiang Airport (ZHA) when you fly to Zhanjiang. Zhanjiang also has a rail line that runs inland to Guangxi. Temperatures are mild in all seasons. On the fifth day of the fifth month by the Chinese lunar calendar, Zhanjiang stages a huge Dragon Boat Festival, where you can cheer on the participants in the boat races. By the Western calendar, the festival falls in the middle of June although the exact date varies from year to year.
