Situated on the shore of one of North Africa s finest natural harbors, Tripoli is host to a vibrant mix of Mediterranean and Arab-Islamic cultures, with vestiges of its Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Italian colonial histories still intact. You can enjoy ancient architecture, haggling in the markets and football matches in June 11 Stadium as well as fine sandy beaches.
Historic landmarks include the Roman Arch of Marcus Aurelius and remnants of the city s ancient walls. The maze-like streets and bazaars evoke a classical ambiance. Built in 1928, the former Tripoli Cathedral is now an ornate mosque. Located on the outskirts of the Medina, or the Arab Quarter, the Red Castle Museum is a palace complex that dominates the Tripoli skyline. Featuring classical statues and fountains from the city s Ottoman period, the edifice houses the national museum. Martyr s Square and Municipal Beach are popular gathering spots.
The largest airport in Libya, Tripoli International Airport (TIP) is located 21 miles south of the city. After you fly to Tripoli, you can reach your accommodations by rental car or hotel shuttle. Tripoli has a hot, semi-arid climate that produces long, dry summers with temperatures that can exceed 100 degrees. Winter temperatures average between 50 and 65 degrees. Annual events include the Tripoli Grand Prix and the Tripoli International Fair.
