If you enjoy biking, hiking or kayaking, a trip to Redding is a must. This once overlooked small town in California has begun to make a big name for itself by capitalizing on its parks, mountains and hiking trails. The Sacramento River figures prominently in Redding. It runs through the town and is accessible downtown by the magnificent Sundial Bridge.
When you fly to Redding, you'll soon find yourself faced with an array of choices when it comes to activities. One of the most popular attractions is Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The Sundial Bridge is here, along with a museum, botanical gardens and an arboretum. If you prefer waterfalls, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area would be more than worthwhile. In addition to four waterfalls, there are hiking trails and scenic mountain views. Maybe fishing is your preferred outdoor activity. If so, Caldwell Park is the spot for anglers. There is also a viewing facility where you can watch salmon and trout in their natural habitat.
Hints and tips
Although it isn't considered a major city, you can fly to Redding directly. Redding Municipal Airport (RDD) is a full-service airport with direct flights to and from San Francisco. With an abundance of sunny days and natural attractions, biking is a popular mode of transportation around town. If you prefer something motorized, the Redding Area Bus Authority, or RABA, is an option in addition to taxis and rental cars.
