Take a trip into history and rich culture by flying to Mardin. The maze-like city situated on a hill has been ruled by Assyrian, Arab, Kurdish, Ottoman, Mongol and Seljuk dynasties over the centuries. The ancient stone homes and elaborate mosques are a testament to each reign and their architectural influence on the Turkish city known as one of the best-preserved areas of Mesopotamia.
The 4th-century Forty Martyrs Church welcomes visitors with elaborate carvings etched above its entrance. You can also visit the Grand Mosque of Mardin, an austere 11th-century prayer hall that features a prominent cylindrical minaret often regarded as a symbol of the city. The historical Mardin Museum houses a collection of artifacts in a luxurious, 19th-century villa. The maze of alleyways in the town of Midyat beckons for exploration, featuring picturesque stone houses, churches, workshops and the MorGabriel Monastery. Delight your senses in one of the many traditional local eateries with specialties that include sugar almonds, fried meatballs, roasted chickpeas and Syriac wine.
Summers in Mardin are hot and dry with average temperatures of 102 degrees Fahrenheit while the winter climate is cold at 26 degrees with occasional snowfall. Travelers flying to Mardin will arrive at Mardin Airport (MQM) approximately 12 miles south of the city. Chartering a minibus or taxi is necessary for the commute in and out of the city.
