Located on the Gulf of Thailand on the northeast coast of peninsular Malaysia, Kota Bharu is home to mosques, museums and heritage architecture, which includes royal residences of the sultan. In addition to the shops of the Pasar Besar, the octagonal-shaped central market, the city also features popular beaches and shipwreck diving sites.
Kota Bharu has museums dedicated to Islam, handicrafts, the Japanese occupation, the royal family and the history and traditions of the Kelatanese people. Some of the museums are housed in historic colonial buildings. Kota Bharu has several popular beaches, including PCB, or Moonlight Beach, and Irama Beach. Visitors who fly to Kota Bharu can also dive on the wreck of Awazisan Maru, one of the first Japanese ships sunk during World War II.
Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) is located inside the city limits of Kota Bharu. From there, visitors can travel via taxi or bus. The city s tropical monsoon climate brings summer highs in the upper 80s and winter lows in the mid-70s. Although the rainy season lasts from August to January, Kota Bharu still boasts more than 2,500 hours of sunshine each year. Popular food includes kuih sweet cakes, curry puffs and pisang goreng, a snack food made from deep-fried plantains. Annual celebrations include the Bird Singing Competition and Kelantan Cultural Carnival.
