Located on the island of Kyushu, Japan, Kagoshima contains a mix of old and new culture. As the capital of the Kagoshima Prefecture, the city has the tall buildings and bustling nightlife that any city-dweller would love. However, the city is also filled with historic sites and museums. Visitors can get the best of both worlds while also experiencing the natural phenomenon of the island.
The first thing you will notice when you fly to Kagoshima is the volcano looming over the city. Sakurajima is just a short boat ride away from the main harbor. The volcano is active, often covering guests with a layer of ash. There are numerous viewing spots, such as Yunohira lookout, that provide views of the volcano and city in its entirety. After returning, guests can take a streetcar to Tsurumaru Castle. The historic site was destroyed during the Satsuma Rebellion. However, parts of it still remain, including a monument. Within the city, destinations include the Sengan'en Garden and Tenmonkan shopping arcade.
While there are a number of different ways to get to Kagoshima, the most popular option is through Kagoshima Airport (KOJ). Upon arrival, guests will need to take a bus to the main train station, which is about an hour away. Here, streetcars and buses use two routes to get through the city. Kagoshima has temperatures reaching the 90s during the Summer, so guests should make sure to stay hydrated while they explore the historic city.
