Once a sleepy fishing town that relied on provisions from the Red Sea, Hurghada is a Cinderella of a city that grew up during the province s tourism boom. The city is prized for its spectacular coral reefs, colorful fish and tiny islands just off the coast. Visitors fly to Hurghada from as far away as Russia to escape the harsh winter months.
Hurghada s biggest draw is Mahmya Island, a tiny island paradise protected by the Egyptian federal government. Fishing isn t allowed, but snorkeling, ogling the splendid scenery and trying the fantastic seafood are all there to be enjoyed. Be sure to see New Marina, an iconic Hurghada district that is full of shops and restaurants. Travelers can also take advantage of opportunities to go on boat and submarine tours. The Hurghada Grand Aquarium is full of fish and sharks from the Red Sea. This is an excellent for those who cannot swim but still want to witness the beauty of ocean life for themselves.
The fastest way into Hurghada is through Hurghada International Airport (HRG). Located about 200 miles away from Luxor via El Hegaz Road, it is almost 300 miles away from Cairo along the Hurghada Al Ismaileya highway. Expect high temperatures over 80 degrees in summer and winter lows near 60 degrees.
