Fly to Cap Haitien

Fly to Cap Haitien to experience the postcard-perfect, crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea. Nestled on Haiti's northern shore, Cap Haitien was crowned "Paris of the Caribbean" when Haiti was a French colony in the 1700s. Cap Haitien remained Haiti's capital until 1820, when the capital was moved to Port au Prince. Although the harbor town is now urbanized, its pristine beaches haven t lost their charm, and the colonial landmarks and rich culture continue to draw visitors.

Attractions

Cap Haitien is home to several historical landmarks that highlight its colonial history. Visit the Citadel, the magnificent fortress built by King Henri Christophe during the slave rebellion against the French. Visit the monument of the Battle of Vertieres, the final battle of independence, near the outskirts of town. Beach lovers will enjoy a trip north of town to the popular beach area and cruise ship port, Labadee.

Hints and tips

When you fly to Cap Haitien, you will arrive a few miles from downtown at Hugo Chavez International Airport (CAP). If you do not rent a car, taxis will be your primary mode of transport. For an inexpensive alternative, consider riding around with the locals. Most of the Haitian locals take 'tap-taps' around town. These colorful buses and pickups are unscheduled, shared rides and are the closest to public transportation in Haiti.
