The Sardinian city of Cagliari is one of the largest ports on the Mediterranean Sea. Founded in the eighth century by the sea-faring Phoenicians, the city has been ruled in turn by Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Genovese, the Crown of Aragon and the House of Savoy. Today, the charming city enjoys one of the highest standards of living in all of Italy. Fly to Cagliari, and you ll be visiting a city whose history shares center stage with cafes, gracious hotels and trendy boutiques.
The name Cagliari is derived from Casteddu, the word for castle in the Sardinian dialect, and Il Castello, the medieval castle fortress, still dominates Cagliari s Old Town from its hilltop overlooking the more modern parts of the city. You ll find the University of Cagliari here as well as the Cittadella dei Musei museum complex. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari contains artifacts dating from Neolithic to Medieval times. Poetto Beach is the longest stretch of sand in Italy; in addition to water sports and sunning opportunities, it offers outdoor cinema throughout the summer.
When you fly to Cagliari, you ll arrive at Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) just outside the city limits. Cagliari also has ferry service from Rome, Naples and Palermo. Cagliari has mild winters and very hot summers when the thermometer frequently soars above 100 degrees.
