Angouleme doesn't want you to discover this treasure since in a weeks stay I never found one street sign for "Ave de Cognac". It's easy to find if you forget that postal address and take the main riverside boulevard where it is next door to Le Vaisseau Moebus (museum) and across from the (well sign-posted) museum of the Bandes Dessines. The apartments are simple but well laid out with all you need if you are on a solo business trip. The staff (Eve!) are charming and helpful. I shall revisit here.
We booked here last minute to attend the Circuits Des Ramparts race event in Angouleme. We paid a lot for this hotel, but even if I had gotten it for £50pn that would have been too much! It’s one of the worst I’ve stayed in. The hotel corridors smelt of sewage and the carpets were filthy. The bags of sweets left in our apartment did not make up for this rundown hotel. The bathroom was pretty disgusting and the hairdryer kept cutting out after about 20seconds; no exaggeration! We were at the front right on the corner and it was extremely noisy and we didn’t sleep very well at all as there were sirens at night and cars from early in the morning, made even worse by the race event attracting loud motors! My photos show some of things I’ve mentioned above. I would not recommend this hotel.
Have stayed here for Circuit des Remparts in Sept when it's really hard to get any where to stay near Angoulême and for location to town it's perfect as only 5 min walk into centre of town. However do bear in mind it's a really steep 5 min walk!! The room itself was very, very basic and shabby and no one seems to clean the rooms. There is some parking but at busy periods you can't guarantee it.
We stayed during the Circuit du Remparts, and found the location perfect. A 15 minute walk from the circuit, restaurants and shops, and just moments from the river for a walk to clear the lungs! The building is very impressive, with a lovely stone vaulted entrance. The apartments are small, and a little oddly laid out, but the kitchenette and bathroom were fine, and the beds comfortable. There was, as other reviewers have mentioned, a slight smell of drains from the kitchen, and the hotel is right on a busy traffic junction, so you have to choose whether you want windows open for fresh air or closed for less traffic noise. We were out all day, so this did not cause us any problem.
We stayed in this accommodation in July as a group of 8 attending a wedding nearby. First impressions were that it was very basic and more like residential apartments than somewhere for a holiday/trip, however for a budget stay it was fine. Don't expect any frills here but then again it's not awful. The only complaint I had was that there is no air con and in the heat of summer this was verryyyyyyy difficult to sleep in, especially as one of our party is heavily pregnant. However reception did give us fans at least which eased it a bit. Beds are comfy enough, again basic but fine, as were shower and bathroom facilities. Overall I would recommend this place if you're on a budget.
Receptionist was very pleasant. The whole place is clean. The rooms are a decent size but you have to pay extra for internet. Beds are not so good - a bit like old camp fold outs but comfortable for what they are. Shower was excellent and it has cooking facilities.
A completely adequate small apartment with great shower and comfy bed .We had no view, just a stone wal !, but the upper floors had a great view. We stayed for the 'Circuit Des Remparts' -great racing but a bit of a climb up to the circuit and the town, but lovely to be able to walk by the river and go to the brilliant wine bar. Would go there again.
This apartment complex is exactly what you need to explore this incredible area of France. Walk out of the front door and you can climb the ramparts "up top" to the beautiful city of Angouleme ...cross the road and you can cycle for miles in any direction along the amazing Charente cycle routes, -your choice nature or the city -or both! - I will continue to return to this area and this "hotel" whenever possible -and for as long as poss' The apartments are clean but compact, they have a microwave , fridge and dishwasher in kitchen , -a mega shower room and in the bedroom the most comfortable bed to collapse into. You will have to wash your own towels and bedlinen in the laundrette on first floor or you can simply pay the cleaners, -remember these are self contained appartments and suit more independant travellers as opposed to those wanting a luxurious hotel with restaurants and service. The reception staff are absolutely amazing equally as good as those in top end hotels I have stayed in.
Beautiful building, very nice location and definitely great value for money. We had a cute studio apartment with kitchen and massive bathroom. We stayed 4 nights and it was really cheap and convenient for us. Receptionist were very helpful and nice and it has a great location next to river and trendy pizza place in the riverside.
Sound insulation of the rooms is fairly good, the fridge and cooking facilities seem in good order. I stayed here in 2012, really liked the place, so came back in 2015. Alas, maintenance has deteriorated. The one reading lamp in the double room shortcircuited during our stay, and staff were unable to replace the lamp because they "had no spares because so many of these lamps break". No shampoo either. Disappointing.
