We stayed at the homes adjoining the hotel. The tipico breakfast was good. The views are fantastic. The service was ok. The alcohol isn't cheap. You pay for those views. Don't count on the surf shop for much. The best meal by far was the Friday night BBQ. Don't miss that BBQ if you are in the area.
We stayed 3 nights in a nice villa with 2 rooms, kitchen and living room, although we were just 2. Environnment is peaceful, we did not enjoy the swimming pool, nor the gym house because we had a full schedule. Breakfast was nice too : fruits eggs fresh juices bread and marmelade. The only downside would be the distance to Puerto Viejo, but you can easily rent a bike (6 dollars per day, 15 min ride) or take a cab (6 dollars) to go back.
The sounds of the jungle will rock you to sleep in these well-equipped 1 or 2 bedroom units. Mariam was a very gracious host willing to help in any way to make your stay more comfortable Location is very peaceful, but with a car you have easy access to the great beaches and animal rescue centres in and around Puerto Veijo, Costa Rica.
We had planned to stay 14 days in VIP Hotel, but when we got to Puerto Viejo and saw how rough the sea was we changed our plans, since it was not possible to bathe in the sea with kids - we hardly dared ourselves. We had obviously not researched properly about the Caribbean coast this time of year, so the condition of the sea is apparently what you can expect this time of year (February). Mariam was very kind to let us shorten our stay - so we were lucky to just pay 800 dollars for 7 nights instead of 100 dollars per day for all 14 nights even though we just stayed 7 nights. The bedrooms of the houses are quite nice - very nice interior decorating, colors etc. The kitchen was ok - but Mariam should change the plastic plates and cups because it does not suite the charm of the house - as well as lacking wine glasses, teaspoons and other details - Mariam was kind to let us know we could just ask her if we needed anything, but we honestly thought there were too many basic things that we were missing that it would become kind of embarrassing to ask for so much. Also a toaster would have made breakfast easier. Another thing that we hope for future guests, is that Mariam changes the lighting in the living room - it is absolutely horrible and depressingly cold. You feel like you are in a sterilized hospital room and can on the one hand not really see what you are doing (due to the poor lighting when cooking or reading) and on the other hand just not want at all to be in the room - which was not very nice when having dinner or for just hanging around inside. Breakfast is not included when you stay for 1 week or longer - apparently - which is not made clear on the website or when you make the reservation (also breakfast was mentioned in the folder she left us in the house…but no breakfast however), so we were a bit surprised, that this was not included. The oven was not working when we got there and ended up leaking gas, which we had turned off immediately. I think Mariam thought it was our fault it didn’t work, but she had obviously not checked this after the last guests had left the house. Due to this happening on a Saturday, the technician did not come to fix the oven until Monday evening, which meant that we could not use the stove for almost 3 days (renting a house is mainly to be able to use a stove ourselves…so we might as well have had a hotel room these days)- no compensation from Mariam…could have offered to make us breakfast at least…she however toasted our bread when I asked her if she could do that - but not on her own initiative. Also make note that there is no AC, just fans, which was just ok, but for AC-picky people it might be a bigger issue. Wifi has also very, very bad reception. We didn’t ask, but there was no mentioning of the bikes (nor did we see any) that the website boasts about being at your service. The pool is very very nice - very clean and big compared to Costa Rican hotels. This we enjoyed the most. Especially in the mornings just up after noon where the sun is on the pool. You can easily walk to the beach in 10 minutes (Playa Negra) and we enjoyed walking to Puerto Viejo along the beach which takes about 20 minutes. We ate (lunch - note that many places do not open for dinner) in Puerto Viejo in AmiModo which we can recommend. We can also recommend Kokis Beach for dinner and also Bread & Chocolate and the Bakery as well as Alice Ice Cream near Playa Chiquita (you can walk from Playa Chiquita) - however only ice cream here, not lunch. All in all the place oversells itself on its website - most places do, but this was more than average in our opinion. The laundry service worked well and was properly made- but that was the most “service” we encountered on our stay except for making calls for us for taxis and the daily light freshning up of the house (every two days a more full cleaning, which also worked fine). We left early in the morning (6.30) with a transfer system, which I had informed Mariam about, so we could formally check out with her. It rained this morning and Mariam did no effort to come to our house before the bus came, nor to offer us help with the luggage or offer to lend us an umbrella….I have never been sent off so coldly before in neither a hotel nor a house-rental place. We are probably on the picky side in general and have high expectations towards service levels and would probably not come back due to the mentioned details above and due to the poor check or cleaning of the house in-between-clients - the coffee machine still had old coffee when we arrived and the cups were not properly cleaned off. I can imagine for many people they would enjoy their stay with the jungle surroundings (there are sloths and beautiful birds in the trees around the pool) , nice pool and due to a possible low price for long stays. So have your expectations very clear when booking with VIP Hotel and you’ll probably have a nice time.
Our stay was great! We had a good time. Marvellous place to sped holidays...and to live as well. The staff was very kind to me and to my family. I hope to come back next year. My kinds had a lot of fun in the pool. The gardens are very well kept.
I spent a fantastic holiday with my wife. It's a very good place to holiday and....to live as well. We really enjoyed our stay because of the idyllic beaches and landcaspes nearby. The hotel staff was also great. We'll return to Playa Negra very soon.
First of all, the hotel's staff is wonderful. Their service is outstanding. Rooms are nice decorated y very clean as well. After the excursions we did, we had a swim at the swimming pool. Everything is exotic and I really recommend it.
precious house. The big houses were pretty. Very well decorated. I enjoyed my holidays so much. Mariam´the owner is a great host. She invited us to a barbecue the last day of our holidays there. I also love the swimming pool. It has a gym in the garden. I love working at the gym near the frogs. Cheers.
Nice place to recover energies from the daily routine. It was my first there inCosta Rica and I received a good impression from both the country and the hotel. The staff people are very kind and I enjoyed the holidays with my girlfriend in a peaceful atmosphere.
This hotel is clean and safe. However, the kitchen lacked some basic equipment and the lighting is poor. The pool is nice and the casitas are comfortable. In general, I don't recommend this for more than a 2-3 night stay. The owner was quite rude to me when I explained that I preferred to pay using PayPal as Moneygram was not a service I was familiar with and it requires going into a physical location which takes time and hassle. The morning we left we had to go into town and stay until the bank opened - even though we needed to be on the road. I explained to her what a hassle this was and that I wished she had mentioned before that we could not pay with cards to which she retorted, "Why on earth would you think you could pay with a credit card!"
