Flor at front desk tried very much to be helpful but couldn't fix much. The pillows had black mold on ALL of them. She got us different ones but they smelled oddly of things being in a closet too long. They show lovely pictures of 2 story building but we got put into an old, SMELLY 1 story building. Supposedly all booked but only 3 cars in parking lot...one of them ours. Yes, maybe, they took tourist buses but with everything else; we didn't really believe that they were completely booked.
We stayed at Hotel Playa Westfalia for about a week, using it as base to explore the east coast of Costa Rica. It worked out perfectly for that purpose, and the hotel was very comfortable, clean, and reasonably priced. The staff was also very friendly, efficient, and helpful. Perhaps because we were staying for several days, we were given a wonderful, two room suite (wit a kitchen and spacious balcony) overlooking the pool and the ocean/beach. Highly recommended!
Cruise ship stop in Limon Costa Rica for a day, didn't want to take my 84 year old father on the cruise ship guided tours, Wanted some peace & quite away from the crowds. We rented a room for the day at Hotel Westfalia, easy 10 minute taxi ride from port to solitude and great food (call ahead and they will make arrangements). Staff is very welcoming, and manager Diana was very sweet and is a top rate chef. Try the arroz con pollo or any of the offerings with the Caribbean sauce. Simply delicious. Rooms are very nice, porch/patio very relaxing, lovely flora & fauna (several sweet perros). Black sand beach - ocean too rough for swimming but great for walking. Wish I could have stayed for several days.
Not knowing our arrival time we waited to book through booking.com a budget priced room for $56.-. On arrival they told us only standard room $80.- was available. Showing them that I could immediately book the budget room the young woman made a phone call and then informed me that budget rooms were not available. After waiting another few minutes to "supposedly" figure out the situation, the budget rooms miraculously disappeared from the booking paltform and the lady on the phone then told me that "no, she would not be in any way helpful to people who were just out to get a better room for a cheaper price and that she doesn't understand why she has to have this conversation with me anyway"!!!! I could not believe what I was hearing! There was no offer of finding a solution only more expensive ones. I have traveled all my life to many countries all over the world and NEVER have I been treated with such disrespect! And it didn't seem like they were booked out or even had a lot to do...nobody around, not cleaned up beach, no motivation.
Folks----look at the last few reviews--see a common theme??? I live in Costa Rica and travel a lot. I know this place since it was built. WAS very very nice---beautiful tile work way out of the ordinary. Right on the beach and was perfect. WAS is the catch word here. Good Lord they charged us 112 dollars per room--more than what we discussed when making the reservation. The rooms STINK! So much mold it hurt to breath---the pillows were black with mold and disgusting and the sheets not washed. So it's nine o'clock and we have guests with a 4 year old and we had been on the road all day--TIRED! My wife gets the manager to the room and he was just plain nasty, rude and has NO CLUE what customer service is. He was so nasty to my wife he is lucky I did not knock him out and tells us to leave and go find a hotel and he will refund our money. Yeah right--nine o'clock and needing sleep and with 4 year old go out hotel hunting. He said he has no access to clean sheets and pillows. Well my wife took his photo, read him the riot act (she is Costa Rican) and he did find us another room that was acceptable except for the fact the toilet did not flush! So---trust me, sleep in your car or under some leaves you will be happier---avoid this place at all costs unless they figure out the nasty jerk manager needs to be fired and close the place and clean for a week and get rid of the mold. Yes it is at the beach and it is hard but to expect people to lay on and breath black mold then abuse you with his nastiness is not worth 10 bucks let alone 112!
The owner sets the standard for the best hospitality. We were in contact with her before our arrival and she was extremely responsive. My mother-in-law is wheelchair bound and the owner made sure she was comfortable at all times, that the room was right, etc. The staff is just as helpful. The first night we arrived late and one of the staff was aware of our arrival and was there to help my mother-in-law. The hotel is right on the beach. Most of the time we were the only ones at the beach, it was great! The pool is also wonderful and the bar/restaurant is feet away. Bar has a good selection of drinks and beers. Breakfast is served every day starting at 7, you get a beautiful view of the beach as you eat. Unfortunately, variety is lacking. It would be great if there was yogurt, cereal and some cheese offered. Since there aren't many options in the area having a restaurant on the premise is great, especially after a day of exploring. The location is a bit remote, but it is a short drive to Cahuita and about an hour away from Puerto Viejo. We felt safe the entire time. Puerto Limon was not what I expected. Definitely skip it, keep driving straight to the hotel. Some of the other reviews mention a musky smell and it is true. As soon as I walked into the room my allergies flared up. Once we kept the room cool it was much better. The AC worked well. The water pressure and warm water was better than I thought it would be. The rooms have flat screen televisions with English language channels. The WiFi was excellent, really strong signal. There are clean bath and beach towels available all the time. Rooms are cleaned every day. Only soap is given so make sure you have shampoo. You can buy from the hotel any toiletries you may have forgotten. This is not a five star resort. This is a family owned business with owners who are extremely attentive and staff who will make sure that you are comfortable. At times it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. This was a really relaxing place. I was nervous prior to our stay due to the reviews and because I wanted my mother-in-law to be comfortable. We were all really happy with our choice!! We would definitely go back.
We were in maribu caribe with loud music and the worst food the first night then they emptied the pool without telling us so we took off and found this great hotel with real food and outstanding service. Plus it's right on the beach. The pool is always open. Great wifi. Very clean. This is the spot we should have stayed from the very beginning.
Helpful staff. Large room & bathroom. Frig and closet space. Has AC. Nice pool although the local crabs like it too. Restaurant menu is limited with many fried items. Could not swim in ocean in front of this hotel. Beware of crabs..scratch at your door in morning too
Puerto Limon is not nice, nothing for tourists so we took a cab to Playa Westfalia just 15 minutes away. We were so pleased we did. Warm, friendly staff, lovely pool, a clean, spacious room and best of all, really fine food in the restaurant. We also loved the free wifi! Highly recommend this quiet, charming spot.
We stayed at this hotel only because it was very close (3km) from the Limón airport and we had a very early flight.... which we almost did not make it to because the "concierge" never called us the taxi he promised. When we got there, check-in was swift and seamless. However, when we walked to our room, we found it (along with every other room along the way) wide open. I love airing rooms out as much as anyone, but not when it's in a climate full of mosquitos, spiders, cockroaches, lizards, and who knows what else. The room overall just felt kind of dingy. There was no hot water for showers and the towels felt like sandpaper. The only toiletry item provided was hand soap, and you had to pay for anything else you wanted. The dinner menu was limited but had traditional food so we opted for that and were severely disappointed... not good at all. At dinner we were joined by loads of warrior wasps which were swarming around the ceiling (one of the scariest insects out there if you've never heard of them). Breakfast was included but since we left before it started (at 7), we missed out and weren't given the option for having it earlier (that is something many hotels will do if they know you have to leave earlier). At almost $100 a night, it wasn't worth it. They definitely capitalize on the fact that they're isolated (unless you have a vehicle). I have traveled A LOT (to almost every continent and in many tropical countries) and this was so disappointing. They have a lot of potential, but need to learn a bit more about running an upscale (as the pricing suggests) establishment. Positives: The a/c, fan, and wifi all worked well. The bed linens were clean. The beach was beautiful and pretty much deserted. The resident dogs were sweet and very friendly. The property itself is quite beautiful.
