San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico and one of the most popular travel destinations in the Caribbean. Its tropical beaches, vibrant culture, authentic cuisine, and premier golfing make it a perfect island getaway. And you do not even need to pack a passport when you arrive straight from the US.
San Juan has two major districts. In historical Old San Juan, you can marvel at colorful Spanish colonial houses, walk down cobblestone streets, and visit centuries-old forts. If you’re looking for something a little more modern, head over to New San Juan to experience Puerto Rico’s bustling metropolis with world class shopping and dining.
One of the easiest ways to explore San Juan and the rest of the island is to rent a car. Gorgeous beaches, rainforests, caves, and mangroves all await. You can easily drive around the 100-mile long and 35-mile wide island in 5 to 7 hours.
San Juan is the perfect destination to enjoy miles of sandy beaches with shady palm trees and crystal clear waters. There are quite a few noteworthy beaches, including Isla Verde Beach, Ocean Park Beach, and Condado. At the beach, lounge around, soak up the sun, or enjoy a wide variety of water sports. Rent a jet ski, snorkel, go on a boat tour, or visit a bioluminescent bay for a truly unique experience. All of the beaches are open to the public and you can avoid the crowds by visiting on a weekday.
Step back in time at San Cristobal Fortress. It is one of the most visited historical attractions in San Juan. Completed in 1790, it covers 27 acres and was built to protect the city from land attacks. During your visit, be sure to book a tour with a park ranger. For instance, a tunnel tour takes you inside the hidden defenses. An outworks tour highlights the exterior perimeter of the fort and the lantern light tour describes what a soldier’s life was like inside the fort. In addition to the historical tours, don’t miss San Cristobal’s panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and city.
Lastly, hop into your rental car and go on a few day trips and excursions. Only 45 minutes away from San Juan, you can spend the day hiking El Yunque National Rainforest. El Yunque is home to hundreds of animals and plants and offers scenic views of waterfalls as well as the surrounding lush green mountains. Entrance to the rainforest is free of charge, but since parking is limited, try to get there early. Also, about 1.5 hours from San Juan, lies Camuy River Cave Park, which is the third largest underground cave in the world.
Renting a car in Puerto Rico’ San Juan offers the convenience and flexibility you will need to get around. Hop in your rental car and access the lovely beaches or indulge in thrilling adventures outside the city. Orbitz offers low rates on all types of rental car classes including SUVs and compact cars.
