Renting a car in Salzburg: What you need to know

If you are thinking about renting a car in Salzburg then you may have a few questions before you get booking. Hopefully, we’ve answered them here.

How old do I need to be to rent a car in Salzburg?

You will need to be at least 19 years old and have held your license for a year to rent a car in Austria, although some companies ask that you are 21. You may need to pay a young person’s surcharge if you are aged between 20 and 24.

What fuel options do I have when renting a car?

You usually have two options when it comes to fuel. Some companies will give you a choice, while others have a single policy. You may be asked to pay upfront for a tank of fuel at the time of collection. This is a prepaid fuel option. You then simply return the car with whatever fuel is left in the tank. Alternatively, you may be asked to leave a fuel deposit and to return the tank full.

What kind of documentation do I need to show when renting a car?

In addition to your valid driver’s license, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) for car rental anywhere in Austria. You should keep both your driver’s license and your IDP on you whenever you drive.

Can I pick up a car and return it elsewhere?

Yes. Most of the larger car rental companies offer one way rentals, although this will incur an additional fee.
