Where many islands in the Caribbean have been developed across every corner to accommodate tourists from around the world, Dominica remains wonderfully wild and untamed. This stunning volcanic island getaway features mountains, forests, waterfalls and, of course, truly spectacular beaches.

It’s an island that rewards the independent and intrepid explorer. Rent a car through Orbitz to ensure that you have your own set of wheels when arriving on the island. Then, spend your time in Dominica roaming along the coastal roads to find quaint Caribbean villages and quiet stretches of coastline before heading into the green, rugged interior.

Dominica and beyond: Where to go in your rental car

Dominica may be a small island but it’s packed with delights. Here are three destinations to visit in your rental car.

Morne Trois Pitons National Park

Most of the south of Dominica is taken up with this awe-inspiring national park. The landscape of mountains and primordial rainforests hides a number of spectacular destinations. Don’t miss the Boiling Lake, where hot gases keep the water bubbling. Trek through the park to find Victoria Falls, where you can swim beneath the cascades – although go there with a guide for the safest trip.

Don’t let the fact that Roseau is a capital city give you the wrong idea. This feels more like a chaotic, charismatic town with buckets of colorful Caribbean charm than a major metropolis. Explore the French Quarter to get a sense of the town’s history, before heading to the Dominica Museum to learn more about the island. Relax in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens, where tropical plants grow in abundance.

Champagne Beach

Drive a short distance south of Pointe Michel to find the hidden, rocky Champagne Beach. While the beach itself is not the most scenic stretch of coastline on the island, the real treat is what lies beneath the waves. Champagne Reef is a colorful, biodiverse dive site that you can reach from the shore. Keep an eye out for rays gliding through the water and seahorses drifting in the coral.
