As in most destinations, you’ll find a few car rental companies in and around the airport, Grantley Adams International. The brands here include the well-known Sixt. The lion’s share of Barbados’ car rental options, however, are dotted throughout the capital, Bridgetown, under half an hour’s taxi ride to the west. Most of these firms, like Coconut Car Rentals and Tours, are local to the island. You’ll be able to arrange for your car to be dropped off near you or to get a transfer to wherever it is.
As well as your driving license and a passport or other internationally recognized form of photo ID with at least three months of validity left, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Barbados Driver’s License. The latter can be bought from your car rental company when you collect your car.
Do note that you’ll need to be at least 21, and drivers under 25 can expect to pay a surcharge.
In short, yes. As well as getting a better choice of cars and often bringing the price down, you won’t have to stress about arranging car rental on arrival. You can just collect your car and start exploring the island. And if you change your mind, you can usually cancel your car free of charge.
Once your rental car is arranged, you’ll be ready to start planning your perfect vacation in Barbados. Here are just a few of the must-see spots.
You’re sure to visit the island’s capital, an Unesco-listed site which has a lively energy, a great range of accommodation and a rich architectural heritage. This is the place to see one of the oldest Houses of Parliament in the Commonwealth, a neat gem of a building that dates from the mid-17th century.
Drive to the north side of the island and within half an hour you can be exploring the raw and beautiful stretch of coast in Bathsheba. With unusual rock formations and pure white beaches fringed with palms, this area is Barbados at its most arresting. This is also where you’ll find the pretty Andromeda Botanic Gardens.
In the center of Barbados sits this natural marvel. Leave your rental car in the parking lot and descend into the earth to ride an underground tram through a spectacular network of caverns, where streams and waterfalls flow far below the surface. If you’re feeling brave you can also venture further into the heart of the caves with a guide.
Rent your car now to collect it as soon as you arrive in Barbados.
