See all Daniel Oduber Intl. car rentals

Costa Rica has it all, from volcanoes and hot springs to deep rainforests and idyllic seaside resorts. Liberia is a good example of the diversity of the country, with the contrast between its colonial roots clearly visible against a backdrop of a multiplex theater and fast food restaurants. When you walk a couple of blocks south of the main street along Calle Real, you will easily see why Liberia received its nickname "White City." When you look for the whitewashed adobe houses, do not overlook the town houses either. Should you rent a car, which you can conveniently do at the airport, you can easily explore the area for yourself.

What to See in Liberia

While Liberia is a threshold to myriad destinations within Costa Rica well worth discovering, it’s also an attraction all by itself. The Guanacaste province offers visitors some of the country’s most incredible white sand and blue water beaches, rainforests, and volcanoes. Liberia's international airport receives flights from a number of major U.S. cities, such as Miami, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta. It also serves well-known destinations on Costa Rica's Guanacaste coast and Nicoya Peninsula.

Thankfully, tranquil beaches and beautiful national parks are only a short driving distance away. These include Tamarindo, Rincon de La Vieja, Santa Rosa, Guanacaste, Barra Honda, and Palo Verde. Despite an increase in tourism and the city’s transformation over time, Liberia still exudes a small town charm. Its colonial buildings are still lining the street, allowing a peek into the past. After all, Liberia is one of Costa Rica's oldest towns. To see the oldest church, visit the white and beautifully adorned Iglesia de la Agonia.

To conclude your journey to the past, the Sabaneros Museum (Museo de Sabaneros) pays homage to Guanacaste's cowboy roots, while the surrounding blocks together form Liberia's oldest neighborhood. It is made up of old colonial style houses that were constructed over a century and a half ago, and it holds no shortage of small architectural gems.
