There are few cities in the US as vibrant and hip as Baltimore. While not always on the tourist radar, the Maryland port town is crammed with exciting attractions and fun things to do that are well worth a visit. Most of the city’s attractions are spread out over various neighborhoods. Popular favorites are Hampden, Federal Hill, Mount Vernon and Canton. Hampden is a quirky area full of second hand shops, whereas Federal Hill is historically significant because it was here that Maryland approved the Constitution of America in 1788. Mount Vernon houses the Walters Art Museum and the Contemporary Museum, and waterfront based Canton offers a vibrant nightlife, plenty of bars, and restaurants. There certainly is no shortage of things to explore in the city, but to properly experience all the neighborhoods in a time efficient way, you’ll need a car. Fortunately, it’s incredibly easy to rent one right from the airport!
Where to start in the beautiful city of Baltimore? Well, if you’re visiting on a Sunday, be sure not to miss the Farmer’s Market. Here you can pick up some tasty local food at great prices and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere! While you’re in the Hampden area, be sure to check out some of the excellent second hand shops packed with furniture, books, and clothes. Moreover, there are also some delicious places to eat at in this funky area of the city.
The historic area of Federal Hill accommodates the glorious Federal Hill Park, a beautifully scenic city area, which boasts awesome views of the city skyline and harbor. But of course, the best way to experience the harbor is to walk through it. A tranquil stroll through the docks early in the morning is the ultimate way to explore the ‘Heart of Baltimore’ and enjoy many of the city’s finest attractions before the crowds appear. With four historic ships to walk through, and one of the country’s best aquariums, there’s something for people of any age to love.
Are you a history fan? Then make sure you don’t miss neither one of the country’s oldest Roman Catholic Cathedrals nor Edgar Allen Poe’s house, which now contains a museum about him and his life. And if you’re into spookiness, you should spend a bit longer at Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, where the brilliant writer was put to his final rest. Rumor has it that the catacomb on site is haunted! On the other end of the scale – if all this eeriness leaves you feeling a bit too creeped out or if ghost hunting isn’t your thing – pay a visit to the Maryland Science Center, one of the oldest of its kind in the country.
Of course, you’re going to be hungry after seeing all of these attractions! If you’re a seafood fan, Baltimore will be your personal paradise. The city revels in food from the local marine life, with blue crabs being a particular specialty. But restaurants in Baltimore can offer so much more than just that. Whether you desire a traditional American diner experience, a deep south BBQ, or a vegan pizza, you will be sure to find it in this fast paced and ever changing city.
