Hotel Metropole3.0 out of 5.0

The hotel is in the middle of Bern, excellent location. The room seems very outdated. You need to run water quite long until you get hot water to come out. The water in the shower does not go down the drain quickly, so you are practically standing in the water to your ankles while showering. But the location is great and the price is reasonable.
There is no getting around that this is a basic hotel with little fancy about it. That said, it is perfectly acceptable in a utilitarian way. The rooms are clean, the bed comfortable, the bath adequate though the shower was a bit small. The staff is friendly and helpful. The breakfast is in the hotel across the street and decent enough (fairly typical European fare). The location near the train station and the old town is nice and there are a number of excellent restaurants in easy walking distance. My bag was lost (by American Airlines :( and I found emergency clothes (though expensive) near by. If I were here for work again, I would stay here happily enough. If I brought my wife with me, maybe I would look for a bit nicer place.
I stayed here for five days while attending a conference, and liked it a lot. The breakfast (across the street at the sister hotel) was quite good, with eggs, bacon, fruit, fresh bread, and everything else you would expect. The hotel is only about two blocks from the train station, and only a 10 minute walk to the University. It is in the center of the old town, near all the sites. The TV has CNN, BBC, CNBC, and many other channels. Internet is free and fast. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Very nice hotel, beautiful room, friendly staffs and good breakfast. Its location had been my first priority before my arrival and I didn't expect much about the other things. Then I found out every thing is really good in the hotel. In a word perfect 👍🏻
Booking for the City Hotel Metropol but automatically transferred to an opposite hotel Kreuz with no explanation. Though room is clean and renovation is new. No earlier check-in arrangement even we arrived early at 9 am in the morning, and we must wait until 2pm for check-in. For lugguage storage, no marking of bag pieces and numbers which may cause loss or mistaken. No fridge or minibar in room, no slippers and tooth brush provided as well. Location is good but the view should be better for Metropol which is at the corner of the street. Convenience is an absolute advantage and is still value for money. Washing machine facility is available. Breakfast included. Free Bern travel card would be given for free travel around Bern during the stay. That's great!
This hotel is located just a short walk from the railroad station in the direction of the old town. The reception was very helpful. When we checked in we were given a ticket for free rides with the busses and trams in the city, that was appreciated very much. Our room was spacy enough but we lacked drawers. The room was clean but a new coat of paint on the window shelf was necessary. We had two comfortable chairs in the room and the bed was comfortable as well. Toilet and shower was quite o.k. and spotlessly clean, but not spacy. WiFi worked well, the procedure to get connection was a bit "off standard" but the reception gave us friendly assistance when we (or the system) failed on our first try. Breakfast was quite good for us, however we were informed breakfast would not be available in 2017 so no reason to go in details here. The hotel's main advantage was the location close to all the sights in the old town. Checking with prices on other hotels, it was also value for money. Places for lunch and evening dining was close by or within a nice walk furter into the old town.
Very good location (few meters from Bern central station), clean and welcoming hotel, very kind staff. Only about the breakfast, I see margin for improvement: no cakes, no coffee machine for an espresso. Surely I'll come back during my next business trips.
The hotel is centrally located, it's staff is very helpful, nice, but If I go to Bern once again, I will not choose this hotel. Overpriced for what it is: old and kind of decrepit, even if it is not so, the bathroom is sinking into ugliness, and not well kept. No outlets, I had to plug both iPad and iPhone on the bathroom! Breakfast was proper but not a thing to write home about. I think they could improve lots of things or not charge what they are asking for. I would say it is a two star hotel, instead of what they say.
In relatively close walking distance to the station, my tour operator booked me in this hotel for convenience of access. Certainly all other hotels I saw between the station and this hotel were of much superior quality, so I presume this was chosen because of price. However, whatever was paid, it was not worth it. I arrived later than planned due to a late running train (yes, it happens, even in Switzerland!), on a Friday evening about 6.30pm to find the reception closed, and a notice on the door saying, go to hotel opposite. Not a good start. That hotel was quite pleasant, and I ate in its restaurant later, for convenience, but once across the road again, and entry gained to "my" hotel, I found my room, and almost immediately wished I'd not bothered. It felt like a youth hostel of the 70's, something I had not expected. The shower room looked pretty awful, though surprisingly the light was OK. I only semi-unpacked, changed, and went back to the hotel opposite to ask if there was another room available, I felt quite unsafe and uncomfortable in it (and I was booked here for 2 nights). OK, they changed me (I suspect to the room originally booked for me from something I'd overheard, but the reception had changed me to a room nearer the lift with no stairs because I was using a stick due to hip problem.) He let me look at the other room, indeed further away from the lift, and up stairs, but even though it was still not very good, it was a little better than the other, though as it happens in a noisier part of the hotel. The bottom sheet was black, for heaven's sake!!! Shower was possibly slightly better, but less well lit, can't win I thought, but decided to change rooms. I really cannot say much good about the room, even then, how long is it since a wash basin was to be found in a hotel room of any quality?? Anyhow, I survived two nights, just, slept very badly, bed was very hard (and I like a firm bed, but this was hard, didn't help my hip at all), didn't bother with a shower, it was very noisy, and since I was woken at 6am (a Sunday) on the day of my departure, by an argument immediately outside the hotel (!) I got up, took an early breakfast and was at the station at 9am ready to continue my journey onwards. I was never so glad to leave a hotel as I was this one. Breakfast was adequate, is all I can say. Synthetic, chaotic and only taken because I had paid for it, and needed sustenance to keep me going. I cannot recommend this hotel unless you are so purse-pinched that you cannot afford better. Price / value relationship - nil.
The hotel was booked online for a 1 night stay The room was described as an Easy Double Room .It cost us the ridiculous price of CHF164. It was chosen for its central position, and proximity to Railway Station. Due to a family commitment, we were unable to book in personally during the day, but our Swiss relative was able to drop off our suitcases early and provided our check in details successfully. We did not reach hotel until after 2200, and were guided by sign on front door to visit Reception at Hotel opposite. They were friendly and helpful . Having gained access to the Metropole, I found my way along darkened corridors to our room Number 317. Straight away , it was evident that we may not get to sleep all that easily, as there was so much noise coming from street level from revelers/ restaurant guests . The beds 2 singles joined were hard and uncomfortable. The room itself was quite spacious, but was quite a mix. The bedroom area showed signs of renovations , with modern decor. But The bathroom!!!!! Ancient!! A shower with shower curtain over small sunken area. Toilet cistern dated But what alarmed me was the steep step down, out from bathroom. to entrance part of room. You really had to take great care stepping down This could be very risky for an elderly guest, or for that matter anybody rushing, intoxicated, or just not looking!!! It needs to be fixed or dont use the room !!! The Breakfast room was spacious, but choices were just average. Breakfast had been included in the price. If we returned to Bern We would give this hotel a miss.
