Hotel Splendid Cannes4.0 out of 5.0

I recently made reservations at Hotel Splendid using booking.com. Unfortunately, I was not aware that it was nonrefundable. Something very bad happened to my family and I had to cancel my trip. Unfortunately, the management at the hotel would not give me a refund. I had several emails with them and I received one saying “it is canceled with no penalty”. I tried to find out about it but all the e-mails responded that they would not credit me. The even suggested I change my dates! I can understand they have a non-refund policy but in cases like mine, where a member of your family is now gone, they should make exceptions. If this is their customer service, I wonder how the hotel works
The hotel Splendid is overlooking the yacht harbour in Cannes, at the western end of La Croisette, one Street away from Rue d'Antibes and just at the start of the old town. So for location is it perfect. The hotel itself is a beautiful old building, very well maintained. It's original entrance on the front has long been given over to a very good mid market restaurant, New York new York, and the entrance to the hotel itself is at the back of the building on Rue Félix Faure. So there is no grand entrance as befits such a grand old building, only a small but nicely furnished lobby. It's only when you emerge from the lift onto a corridor that is wide and majestic, that you begin to get the true feel of the building. We had a lovely spacious room on one corner of the fifth floor which had two floor to ceiling double doors leading onto a large furnished balcony with a great view over the port and up to the old town on the right. It was nicely furnished and decorated with two very comfortable armchairs which we pulled to the windows to look out as the weather wasn't good while we were there. Unfortunately the large double bed was very hard indeed and we could not get a comfortable nights sleep for the four nights we spent there. That was a big drawback and the only thing that would definitely stop us from returning. A minor irritation that could easily be addressed is that the hotel only has baths in it's bathrooms. Nice for those who enjoy a long soak, but not for anyone over sixty who is starting to struggle with climbing in and out of a bath as we are. Our bathroom had a splendid corner bath but the positioning of the taps and handheld shower tap on the only accessible side of it, made it very difficult to get in and out of, despite the provision of a grab rail on the side wall. Breakfast had the exact same offerings as another four star hotel we had come from in Nice but was not up to the same standard of quality. The bread for toast was stale one morning, on another both juices ran out and were not replaced, and on the Sunday morning at five minutes to the final hour, an elderly lady who we presumed was one of the hotels owners, was ordering her troops to clear everything away, obviously she had a pressing engagement elsewhere that took precedent over her guests! The lady who set and cleared the tables and took our orders for tea or coffee however was very pleasant, efficient, and welcoming every morning. There is something not quite right about the ethos of this hotel. While the reception staff are very pleasant and the aforementioned breakfast room server is particularly so, the overall impression of the Splendid is of a hotel run more for its owners benefit than for its guests. Somewhere along the way the family that own it have lost sight of the most important thing. Not their beautiful building, nor the rigid thinking behind keeping only baths, but the comfort of their guests, surely what any good hotel keeper knows should be their number one priority.
Upper level rooms have really charming view over the Harbour. Also de breakfast area has really nice terrace, unfortunately not enough tables for all the guests. The breakfast buffet is average and doesn’t offer anything special. Room was clean, nice and cozy. Location is great for exploring Cannes by walking.
A bit of Old World charm right in the middle of all the action in Cannes. Our room faced the harbour and the old Town, and from the 5th floor we had a great view. We spent New Years eve there to avoid having to drive into Cannes and back home the same night. Pais parking lots are nearby. Would go back!
We enjoyed the great location of the hotel. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The room with balcony was great and the breakfast buffet has a great selection. We probably would stay here again, but the parking poses somewhat of a problem since it is off site. Other than that, a very nice place to spend some time.
Reception polite & friendly Room clean Everything on your doorstep, love the area Could have more tea & coffee in the room ,bigger cups, & a hook in the bath so we could have a shower , besides this little things would return again . Thank you . Derek , Linda thompson
Once you’re inside the door, you can feel the historic atmosphere of this great hotel, with cosy rooms and seaview, close to everything worth seeing in Cannes, and in walking distance to many good restaurants.
A true family hotel with history. Good and extensive breakfast, close to the conference center, boulevard, shopping and restaurants. Room at the road can be a bit noisy, just close the shutters. And trully excellent service, thank you.
Excellent location right in the center with a great view on the marina.. Very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms could do with some lifting. Overall a good experience and good value for money - better than expected
The hotel is ideally located for restaurants and bars. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The only slight negative is the lack of a proper shower- it would have been better is the shower head was fixed to the wall. Would recommend the hotel.
