Best Western Hotel Univers4.0 out of 5.0

The best things about this hotel are its location and the extremely friendly and helpful staff. The standard bedrooms are very basic for a four star rating, with cheap furniture, similar to what you would find in typical student accommodation. Having said that, our small room was clean and functional with a fridge, free safe, hairdryer, comfortable bed and good quality bed linen. The bathroom seemed to have been refurbished more recently than the room and was of a good standard. The air con worked well, as did the wifi. It is cheaper to book your room in advance with breakfast included, as it is 16 euros per person to pay for breakfast when you add it on at the hotel. The cold buffet breakfast was quite good with plenty of cold meat, cheeses, fresh fruit salad, pastries and smoked salmon, but the only cereal option was muesli, which might not suit everyone. The hot option was a lump of congealed egg in a hot tray which was supposed to be scrambled but looked more like an overdone omelette. We used the self service egg boiler, which produced a decent boiled egg. Nice view from the small breakfast terrace and breakfast room, however you are not able to enjoy this view other than at breakfast, as there is no bar or lounge for guests to use. Overall, the hotel is good value for money considering its location is right in the centre of everything and only a couple of minutes walk from the station. You have the beach, harbour and numerous shops, bars and restaurants all within a few minutes level walk. It is not a hotel you would choose for a luxury break, but the friendly staff make up for the lack of ambience and do their best to make your stay a happy experience. Ask for a room on a high floor for better views. We had a room on the 5th floor and you could not hear any noise from the street below with the window closed.
The hotel and Booking.com claim the hotel is four star but there is no restaurant, no bar, no room service and most of the time only one person on duty. They also seem to employ school boys in their mid-teens. It does have a great location and smiling staff but so do many other hotels. It was to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary in a place we love from many previous visits, Cannes. From the day we arrived to the day we left it was all wrong. Asked months in advance for a shower because of our stiff old limbs and got a bath to climb into. No towels on arrival, had to ask. No tea, coffee or kettle, had to ask eventually we bought our own at the supermarket. Superior room nothing like the website with a view of walls, rubbish and nesting pigeons. No towels or shampoo on second day, had to ask. Gym/sauna advertised as 24 hours but not true. After complaining they moved us to a junior suite for the last night and offered breakfast, we moved our clothes went back for milk and Coke, in five minutes someone had stolen the Coke making us feel very vulnerable. Tried to report this but suddenly my French was not understood and nobody spoke English despite their claim to speak four languages including English. In the junior suite the aircon did not work, the fridge was warm in both rooms, we had to ask for towels again, they only provided hair conditioner no shampoo. On the doors to the stairs was a small sign warning of a step, nobody expects a step down immediately even if they see the sign, which I did not. The stair light switch was behind the door when you opened it. The bruise on my ankle is still there a week later. We ordered a taxi from the reception to the airport and it cost 40% more than the taxi to the hotel. On check out we asked about the stolen Coke and the manager said they put two free cans of Coke in the fridge for us and we could have had water free but she never told us. She did not understand that it would be a good idea to tell us as we did not want to incur the crazy prices of the minibar. At all times they said it will be much better next year, like we cared. We complained to Booking.com and they are trying to pass the blame to the hotel who are denying almost everything and find it easy to lie.
Excelent hotel personal extraordinary great aplacement closebto the beach ,restaurant , shopping area ,train station and bus station price was very good for cannes they can help with parking for car !!!!!!
great experience. very good location, close to the main shopping street, the beach and the train station. the suites on the 6th floor have been recently renovated and are excellent, offering a private terrace with a view to the old castle an d the sea.
I'm an expat living in Nice and from time to time I visit Cannes. 95% of my overnight stays are to the Univers. The value is exceptional. It's conveniently located. It's comfortable and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The past week I stayed in one of their remodeled suites on the 6th floor. Outstanding. Great baloney with 2 sun chaises to relax after a hard day at the beach or before going out for the evening. For the past 13 years the Univers has been home when in Cannes. Try it - you won't be disappoint !! Tell the that the Duck sent you !!
Our family trip to Cannes started very rocky because our luggage didn't make the journey with us from the states. The staff at the Best Western Hotel Univers allowed us to check-in early so that we could clean up and make a tour to St Tropez that we had booked for that morning. The entire staff was very helpful and kind; however, Veronica went out of her way to help us to change the language on the television from French to English and to bring us an iron and ironing board. Thank you Veronica, your customer service didn't go unnoticed.
This hotel is in a central location. The reception staff are friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable with complimentary shampoos, soaps and the room had a fridge which was useful. The breakfast and service was exceptional.
I spent only a few days at hotel. I had a booking problem, but the manager of the reception solved the problem with a huge kindness. She was pretty like the all staff in the hotel. The room was clean, the bad was good. I really enjoyed sitting on the terrace of a good breakfast and listening to true French chanson....It was a great time. thx.
Super clean and comfortable!!! This Hotel is pefectly positionned in the city center and the management and staff offer a warm welcoming and assistance! Especially the dynamic Alexandra, she will give you precious advises to discover the city and local stuff! If you travel to Cannes help yourself staying there!!!
This is an old hotel without any particular charm. It is a pity because with a refurbishment, it could have a lot of potential. However the hotel seemed clean. Location is however very convenient, between the train station and the beach. Walking distance to anywhere in Cannes. Staff is very friendly.
