Black Orchid Resort

Recent guest reviews

We just stayed 3 nights at the Black Orchid during Hurricane Earl and the owner and the entire staff were amazing! We had been on San Pedro Island and decided to move inland before the storm hit. Made a last minute reservation and couldn't have been happier with our choice! This place is a jewel - just about a 20 minute drive outside of Belize City. They really took care of our every need -- kind, caring, and reassuring. We would love to go back under different circumstances. Would make an awesome base to do eco-tours. Great restaurant and bar as well. They had the grounds cleaned up and looking beautiful again the morning after the storm.

We expected a resort and got a hotel...... The only free things available were the pool, WiFi, airport shuttle and bikes. The river was too high, so NO kayaking, rafting or canoeing. Motor boat on site? Yes, for $70 Fishing on site? Yes, if you bring your own fishing rods. 2 Jacuzzis on site? Yes, but they don't work...ever! Free breakfast? hardly, we ended up buying ours. The free breakfast consisted of corn-flex, bread, butter, jam, 2 pastries and fruit. Spa is $60-$135. Other guest liked it, we did not use the spa. The hotel is located in the middle of nowhere, so you must eat in their restaurant, buy their tours (expensive!) and drink at their bar: 1 beer was $4 while in other places in the city or on the islands it was 5 or 6 bottles for $10. The staff was nice but offered no compensation for the broken Jacuzzi, absentee fishing rods, unavailability of the river use: no free lunch or a free drink or a free tour. We had nothing to do other then the pool, or purchase additional tours. The worst thing was the deception on the restaurant bill: Under the subtotal is a line for TAX (12.5) BUT it ALSO INCLUDES A 10 SERVICE CHARGE. The next line is the total and then an additional line for TIPS. Most guests assumes tax is only tax, and added 15 tip! Lunch was about $10-15 and dinner was about $15-25 before tax & tip. The food was OK.

the Black Orchid Resort was fantastic, from the Howling Monkeys ,giant Iguanas, birds,Crocs, it's all there in a very beautiful setting, you wont be disappointed the STAFF was really GREAT and friendly, definitely have to do this trip again.

The hotel staff was very welcoming and accommodating. We were staying the night for an early morning flight and because we would miss breakfast the staff put together a to go breakfast to take to our room for the morning. The dinner although a little overpriced was very tasty. The room and bathroom was clean and the beds were extra comfy! We were bummed we couldn't spend more time at the hotel as the grounds were very pretty and filled with plenty of beautiful birds and plants.

Hotel clean, drinks and bartender was fantastic, shuttle driver prompt, veny nice helpful staff. Only drawback, our dinner was awful. It was cooked hours before we ate and was warmed up for us.. We were there on a weeknight, dinner at 7:30. This hotel was perfect for our last night in belize, free fast shuttle to airport in the morning is great.

My husband and I stayed here at the end of our vacation in Belize. Everyone we worked with was very friendly and accommodating. We really enjoyed canoeing on the river, swimming in the pool, swinging in the hammocks and playing scrabble on the veranda in the peaceful ambiance of Black Orchid resort. Staying here we were able to leave our time in Belize on a great note and we really appreciated the airport transfer. The accommodation provided by Black Orchid is sure to please couples, business travelers or a group having mixed tastes. It is in the middle of the jungle, so there wasn't much in the way of nightlife and we were woken up early in the morning to the amazing sound of howler monkeys and bird calls - which was just fine by our taste!

This was a big splurge for us on the trip and regret that we only spent one amazing day/night at Black Orchid. It would be a great place to use as a base and do tours of the rest of Belize from there. It was really clean and comfy, with great service and amenities. The jungle was amazing filled with many species of birds that we enjoyed seeing from a couple of paddles we did on the river that flows next to the resort. We could see the river from the porch of our room and that was really great too. It is important to remember that this place is in the jungle and for us, that really added a lot, but there were iguanas and geckos and monkey sounds pretty up close and personal. We loved it but it may not be for everyone. The restaurant was fine and the resort was really accommodating with transfers, making this place really accessible. We would love to stay at Black Orchid again when we next return to Belize.

If you don't want to stay in the city, this is the place for you. The hotel is lovely with comfortable rooms, good AC, and great food. It was the perfect place as we wanted to stay overnight to do mainland tours (cave tubing and altun ha). We then went to Ambergris Cay for 7 nights.

My partner and I stayed at this location on an overnight trip coming from Dangriga (Hopkins resort stay) on our way to Belize City. Our flight was for the following day leaving to the US so I decided to pick this hotel for the reviews and value. We were 2 of 4 people staying that night and received wonderful personal attention. The checkin was quick. The hotel arranged for us transportation since the complimentary shuttle would be from the intl airport and we missed our flight and arrived at municipal airport so they had a driver pick us up ($35 charge). The property has good upkeep with pool and grounds kept clean. Ordered room service dinner which was delicious (veggie pasta). The only trouble we had was with wifi. It was very slow and spotty. We called and got password for room wifi but still none of the networks we used were great for work emails and downloading a movie. I think this is a good place for a stay near the international airport. Breakfast staff was helpful and friendly. AC in room worked well and the fan in the breakfast area was fine. Wear insect repellent though as I forgot the following day!

This was my first time to Belize and I chose to stay the first night in Belize City before taking off to the island the next day. Black Orchid was a PERFECT choice. The staff was SO incredible! The driver was waiting for us with a sign at the airport and also we had them drop us off at the water taxi the next day, very nice people. The property was very pretty, right on the river. They have lounge chairs around the pool, and hammocks under the trees. Complimentary breakfast in a screened in kitchen overlooking the river. I was very pleased and would definitely rebook if I visit again.

The Black Orchid was the most beautiful and restful vacation I have ever had.The staff are great. You will feel pampered to the fullest. I am already making plans to return. I must have gained 5 pounds from the sumptuous food. The facial I had was one of the best I ever had at a fraction of the cost. I strongly recommend the resort

This hotel/resort GREATLY exceeded my expectations! I will recommend this to everyone! Beautiful, clean pool, right by the river where you can see the howler monkeys feed in the trees, no extra cost to use canoe, paddle boat, or bicycles. If you don't feel comfortable by yourself in the river, you can have a guide take you out. There are colorful hammocks in the shade of the trees right by the pool. Pool towels are thick and like beach towels, not like room towels. We had two different rooms (we left and came back a few days later), and they were both roomy and decorated beautifully with extra amenities: Vaulted ceilings on upper floors with ceiling fans, air conditioner with a remote, thick, fluffy pillows, pillow top mattress (comfy!). The bed frames and decor are original & interesting. The showers are tiled with large shower heads. Plenty of shampoo, conditioner & soaps, & several bottles of water in the fridge. The housekeeping staff even decorates the bed with flower petals and arranges the towels into shapes (ours was two swans!). What's great is they also have a FREE shuttle to the airport and back, anytime, since they are only 15-20 min. away. The STAFF was always helpful and friendly. The breakfast was in like a log or bamboo building by the pool, provided at no extra cost and included eggs, pancakes, sweet biscuits, the best ripe fruit ever, juice, toast, etc. Oh, I also loved sitting on the balcony that each room has, as I had a view of the river/hammocks/pool. There are plenty of tour options. The only drawbacks for me were that the dinner meals were average and the tours costly. We did end up taking one tour, however, and the guide was extremely knowledgeable. Another couple we met did a package promotion and loved it!

The views, the wildlife, the staff everything about this place is worth the stay. I highly recommend this resort to any person with family or to just wanting to relax from the world.

Away from the city but still easy to reach transport to the off shore islands and on the way to the jungle country of the Cayo District. Very accommodating staff, large very clean rooms, pleasant dining room and reasonably priced good food. What's not to like.

Only stayed one night after a week in Plecencia before heading home. Chose this place due to the decent reviews and the price was ok. It's about a 10-15 drive from the Belize City International Airport away from the city. The location is very secluded and quiet right on the river. The room was fine - kind of plain but comfortable and clean. The bathroom was small but the shower was nice and blasted the water out pretty well. There is a small pool some other guests were using. Had dinner at the restaurant (there's not much choice but to have it there since there is nothing else around!) and it was actually quite good. The people working at the restaurant were very friendly and took good care of me. I was able to get the free shuttle back to the airport with no problem. This would be a decent place to stay for a few days if you wanted to explore the area more. You would definitely need wheels though.

The hotel is situated on the banks of a jungle river, a nice, quiet setting away from the bustle of Belize City. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was clean and comfortable, if a bit spartan.

This is a jungle resort, The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. For the price you cant go wrong. The restaurant was mediocre compared to others we ate at but over all the hotel is worth a visit.

We had a car, so this was a convenient alternative to the city, which is not so nice. This is a good place to stop if you are coming in to the airport late, are planning to drive west to San Ignacio and don't want to hassle with Belize City, which is not so nice. We drove into town and had dinner at a riverside cafe, got somewhat lost coming back, but were happy with our choice of the black orchid.

Beverly and her staff were very friendly, professional and accommodating Beautiful grounds...quiet and relaxing atmosphere (although there is construction at the moment). The best shower we had in all of Belize!! Lot's of hot water and lots of pressure. Had a great time at the Black Orchid. We would recommend this hotel for a one or two night stay to relax and see the area, but then would move on if you are requiring any shopping or nightlife. The pedal boats , canoes and kayaks were fun to take out on the Belize river. The airport shuttle service was a definite plus. If we ever make it back to Belize, we would definitely stay here again.

Hotel is close to the airport and offers free transfer to/from airport, good rest stop for for first or last day of the trip. The staff are very friendly! The rooms are very clean and place are quiet. We did not hear the howler monkey, which supposedly can come by and be noisy.
