Right on your doorstep:

Take a 15 minute stroll along the beautiful riverside into Barley where you will find access to the picnic site and all the amenities below.

• Pendle Hill Walk: The classic route starts from the Barley car park/picnic site (just a short stroll away). It’s a moderate-to-challenging hike (about 4–6 hours round trip depending on your pace) with rewarding 360° views from the summit.

• Barley Picnic Site & Village Green: Perfect for a relaxed lunch, paddling in the stream, or watching the world go by. There’s a playground and public toilets.

• Pendle Sculpture Trail: A fascinating walk featuring sculptures that tell the story of the Pendle Witches.

• The Cabin: Grab sandwiches, cakes, hot drinks, and snacks with great views of the hill.

Local Pubs & Places to Eat in Barley

• The Pendle Inn (Barley Lane): A proper country pub with real ales (including Thwaites), hearty pub classics, famous pies, and a warm welcome. Dog-friendly in parts of the bar. Great for walkers and locals alike. Telephone – 01282 614808

• The Barley Mow: Beautiful hunt-lodge style pub serving excellent food (steaks, seafood specials, classics). Lovely atmosphere at the foot of the hill. Telephone – 01282 690868 – If you mention where you are staying, the owner has offered a 10% discount off your food.

Both pubs are within easy walking distance (around 20mins) and serve food most of the day. It is recommended to book at weekends.

Nearby Towns & Attractions (All within 15–30 minutes drive)

Clitheroe (approx. 10–15 mins): Charming market town with Clitheroe Castle and museum, independent shops, cafes, and a weekly market. Excellent for a day of browsing and lunch. Don’t miss the views from the castle.

Gawthorpe Hall (near Padiham, ~15 mins): Stunning National Trust hall with beautiful gardens and interiors — great for history lovers.

Burnley (approx. 10–15 mins): Larger town with Towneley Hall, the Singing Ringing Tree sculpture, and good shopping/supermarkets.

Forest of Bowland: Stunning drives and walks in “England’s little Switzerland” — ideal for scenic routes and peaceful countryside.

Skipton: A historical market town known as "Gateway to the dales" features a remarkably preserved 900 year old medieval fortress, 4 day outdoor market, scenic canal sidewalks and narrowboat trips.

Wycoller: Ruins of Wycoller hall which is thought to feature as Ferdean Manor in Jane Eyre. Old bridge across the beck dating back 1,000 years.

Other great options:

• Roughlee & Newchurch: Atmospheric villages tied to witch history.

• Ribchester or Whalley: Further afield for Roman ruins or abbey remains.

Practical Tips

• Supermarkets: Nearest large stores in Colne (Asda) or Nelson (Morrisons) and also Clitheroe (Tesco, Booths, etc.). Barrowford has also Booths and The Spa shop. Smaller essentials available in nearby villages.

• Parking: Ample space in the village (paid car park near the picnic site for walkers). It does get extremely busy at weekends, so it is better to walk along the riverside into Barley.

• Weather: Pendle Hill can be windy and changeable — bring layers and good walking boots. Check the forecast before heading up.

• Dogs: Many local paths and pubs are dog-friendly —but you may need to keep your dog on a lead due to livestock.

• Wi-Fi / Signal: Mobile signal can be patchy on Pendle hill and is not great on the way to Barley, once in Barley there is no signal but you can get Wi-Fi at both pubs; Wi-Fi in the property is very good and reliable.
The apartment is heated and features a kitchenette and a patio. Guests can expect to find free WiFi and a Smart TV with a DVD player. Other standard amenities include a coffee maker, a desk, and a kitchen island.
