Disappointing stay

Lovely old historic building with lovely helpful staff but room hadn’t been cleaned properly (rubbish from previous guest on side of bed) and the view was very disappointing considering the property (see pic) I felt like I’ve been shoved in the basement. Doubt I go back here tbh

Where do I start? They changed one of our rooms last minute to a lower grade, gave a £20 discount but really didn’t compensate as the amount of stairs to climb for a couple in their 70’s was unacceptable. Told us it was a family room which we couldn’t believe as it didn’t even have room to accommodate any bedside cabinets. The bar was a joke, didn’t matter what drink we ordered it came in a glass that I wouldn’t even give to my grandchildren, would have been nice to have a gin in a balloon glass with a piece of lemon & a whisky in a whisky tumbler. The barman told us they didn’t have any of those? The toilets in reception were very poor & obviously hadn’t been cleaned or checked recently as no toilets had loo roll on the holders with several empty cardboard rolls on the floors. The breakfasts were left uneaten as they tasted & looked as if they’d been cooked 3 hours earlier, ok if you like your eggs so rubbery that your knife bounces off them & the hash browns were hard but swimming in oil. Felt sorry for the Reception staff as we were told there was no Manager on duty so they were left to deal with our complaints & they were very nice, we were given a further discount but this really didn’t compensate as we would have rather had a better stay. Definitely won’t be returning!

Not so good service

We arrived at 14.15 and was turned away at check-in. Strict 15.00 check-in unless obviously you pay extra early check-in charge. The two on reception just had no clue. The room was dated and bathroom door was not attached at bottom hinge. Also extractor fan grill was full of fluff didn’t look as if it had been cleaned in a long time. The pool and jacuzzi were amazing and very warm so this part of our stay made up for it a little bit. Overall would i use this hotel again. Well no i don't think we will

On the outside the Oaks is a beautiful building set in lovely grounds. Unfortunately that is where it ends! Inside it is very dated and tired. Communal carpets are worn, torn and have tape suck on them in place. This presents a few trip hazards. No lift and lots of stairs and corridors even to get to the ground floor! The room was dated, tv was loose on the wall, bathroom door squeaked terribly and the shower drain made a horrendous noise throughout the whole time the shower was running. We booked 2 nights, understandably the room wasn’t cleaned on day 2, only the tray contents replaced. However my dirty coffee mug was just left, it would not have taken much effort to have replaced it with a clean one. I did ask at reception and was given a clean mug. We reported the shower issue to a young man on reception this morning and there was no interest whatsoever, only a bit of a laugh. Our corridor was narrow but made worse by four large trolleys stacked with towels being left there. The best part of our stay was the spa aside from the 15 minute wait as no one was behind the counter to help us. Such a pity as the property itself is very beautiful, needs a total refurb and people who care

The hotel is looking very tired. The rooms were not as the pictures suggested they would be. It’s almost as if the room pictures were taken in another hotel. Dinner menu was very limited. Breakfast also limited no croissants, my full English was lukewarm and even though I had the large breakfast, it was quite small. The hotel needs a good clean. I would not stop at the Oaks again.

Sink was blocked in the bathroom of room 142. Noisy room above and in the corridor near by. One has to walk through where people are dinning to get in or out. Clear signage needed for access to the spa and exits / car park.
