Our farm (= finca) is 50 hectares or 120 acres in size, which you can explore in various ways: hiking, horseback riding, refreshing in the swimming pools in the river and under the waterfall after a short hike, catching crayfish, strolling through our fruit garden and vivero and snacking on homegrown fruits, watching and listening to Costa Rica's rich wildlife such as monkeys, Armadillos, Oppossums, numerous species of birds and with patience and some luck also Jaguarundi, Olingo, Porcupine, Pizote, foxes, and many more.

Interaction with guests:
You do not live alone on our farm. We live nearby (but far enough away to ensure your privacy) and are always available - do not hesitate to contact us! We are eager to help regarding any problems or worries you might have, and help you to make the best out of your trip to Costa Rica, to answer all your questions about Costa Rica, the farm and the various adventure tours you can pursue here, the horseback tours through our mountains, about the authentic Costa Rica off the tourist trail or just for a glass of wine.
More:
You will enjoy the time on the finca on the mountain like in an eagle's nest! From here you can enjoy vast views and observe the breathtaking game of clouds and beautiful sunsets. Maybe you prefer to relax in the hammock on your terrace or swim in the pool enjoying the stunning sunsets. Then you will feel that you have arrived.

Follow your desire to explore on small hikes along paths enjoying wide views of the landscape and through the jungle. You will see forest plantations with cape berries (Physalis), cocoa, oranges, various lime trees, cashew trees, papaya, zapote, mango, avocado and many more, an infinite variety of tropical trees, shrubs and herbs. The monkey herds usually reveal themselves with their calls and conversations, you almost always hear that from the terrace and it is safe to say that an encounter with them on paths on our finca is nearly guaranteed. We have at least three monkey groups on our finca that wander in small groups in the treetops and can often be watched. With attention you will discover many species of birds, pizotes, armadillos, foxes, jaguarrundi and in the evening with luck even our Olingo bear.

Even easier to observe is our small horse herd of Paso Peruanos, one of the most comfortable horse breeds in the world from South America. Maybe you would like to discover the magnificent surroundings on the back of our Peruanos? Or you prefer to hike down to the river, where you can cool off in the natural bathing pools or at the waterfalls?

The beaches at Samara and Nosara, which can be reached quickly from here (Playa Samara in 23 minutes), are among the most beautiful beaches on the Pacific coast. There are lonely beaches where you are often the only person. On moderately busy beaches like Playa Samara with a wonderful mix of beach under palm trees, restaurants and cafes right on the beach, everyone likes to unwind.

The small town of Samara offers a unique mix of people from all over the world and correspondingly the most diverse shops and restaurants. When returning from the sea you will enjoy the cooler mountain air as relaxing and can sleep well with or without air conditioning, in contrast to the night heat right on the beach. A stroll through the nearby old colonial city of Nicoya is recommended to feel the Costa Rican life with almost no tourists. This rapidly developing town is the cultural center of Nicoya Peninsula, which is known for the longevity of its people (Blue Zone). Visit the large jungle village Nosara via the spectacular mountain panorama route that passes our finca. In Nosara you can see how expats commence their new phase of life with yoga, surfing and tropical nightlife. Back in the tranquility of the finca, you will again feel like in pure nature, where you can watch animals and listen to the sounds of nature, catch crayfish (freshly caught and prepared), and enjoy the company of friends. If you are looking for an authentic Costa Rican experience then this is definitely what you are looking for!

In addition, you can easily book one of the many tours: Canopy Zip-line, kayaking to the island, deep-sea fishing, exploring the mangroves by boat, visiting the rare macaw breeding project, surfing in Samara or Nosara, snorkeling on the reefs ...

Neighborhood:
Already the journey over Cuesta Grande in the mountains to our finca is incomparable. It is the most beautiful mountain road in Costa Rica. The very well drivable gravel road offers again and again spectacular views of the mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean with its incomparable beaches. In clear weather you can even look down to the Cordilleras of the mainland. In the morning white clouds pass through the valleys and it feels like being a bird yourself. You will love the ride at any time of the day.
Here you will find the real Costa Rica. A small village in which mainly coffee farmers live. You can also find oranges, fruits, vegetables, chicken and cattle here. On Sunday football is played on the Plaza or you meet at the village shop for a chat. Here the horse is still a real means of transport.
On the edge of the village is our Farm.
Transportation:
By car:
If you arrive by car we recommend four-wheel drive.
4WD is good, but not necessary. With a four-wheel drive vehicle, you can explore the adventurous environment better.
Without a car:
There is a public bus on the asphalt road from Nicoya to Samara.
If you prefer to come without a car, we will gladly pick you up from Nicoya or Samara, and for an additional charge from the airport in Liberia or San Jose. For your stay, you can rent a car in Samara, if available. Contact us.
Guests can expect to find free WiFi. Other standard amenities include a private pool, a kitchen, and a washing machine. Housekeeping is available on request.

Peace, Tranquility and Nature in Abundance
We had a peaceful stay at the finca. The location is amazing and the owner Michael is a wonderful host. He was available to answer any questions we had and provided lots of information about the property and surrounding area. This is a beautiful secluded location with mountain, valley and ocean views. The drive through the mountains to the property is breathtaking. The road is unpaved but in good condition. A 4x4 was not needed but some might be more comfortable with a 4x4 and I’m not sure if the conditions change in the rainy season. The rooms are modern, beautiful, and clean. There is a fully equipped kitchenette with a full-size fridge and everything you need to prepare meals. The balcony is very private and offers fantastic views of the landscapes. The pool is a lovely common area with an ocean view and chairs for lounging. The property is very large with fruit trees all around. There are hiking trails, a river and a waterfall on the property. There are also horses for those interested in riding. If you are looking for peace and tranquility and enjoy being surrounded by nature then this is a great choice.

Amazing Stay
We loved staying here! The property and casita were stunning. The views! We enjoyed hiking on the property and seeing the waterfall and monkeys and listening to the birds. Michael was so friendly and informative. We had everything we needed here. We stayed for 5 days and took day trips to different areas of the peninsula and beaches. It is off the beaten path and 4 wheel drive was needed for the rough dirt roads. We went to Sabor de la Montaña 3 times because we loved it so much. The pool at Finca Cotinga was really beautiful as well. The internet was not great, but this was fine for us. We were on vacation and ready to disconnect. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Michael and Irena for letting us experience this little piece of paradise.

Great relaxing vacation!
My husband and I enjoyed a very relaxing stay at Finca Cotinga. I actually stayed for 5 weeks and my husband came the first and last of those weeks. I couldn't have been happier with the Casita and the property. Also, Michael and Irena were wonderful hosts! Besides waking to the beautiful views of the mountains and ocean every morning, I relaxed at the pool, hiked to the waterfall and enjoyed the deck of the Casita. Also, if you need to work while you are there, (which I did) ask Michael and he can make sure you have the internet speed you need. Its a little out of Samara (30 minute drive), but that is what I prefer. There is a restaurant (Sabor de la montagna) within 10-15 minutes that is easy to get to as well. We enjoyed dinners there quite a bit. I like having easy access to town and the beach but overall, I like the quiet and serenity that the Finca gives. If you like being in nature, listening to howler monkeys, watching the hummingbirds, then this is the place for you! Plus having the pool and the waterfall on the property makes it even better! We loved our stay at the Finca! I would highly recommend it!

Other than a good view, very unimpressed. Beware: less than 1 mbps internet speed!
The worst part was the internet was virtually non existent. When it wasn't cutting in and out it was <1 Mbps, and only the balcony and the odd spot in the unit would get it. This place should not be advertised as having internet. My wife needed stronger internet, but I simply to check emails here and there and even that wasn't doable. Michael convinced us to stay saying he'd spoken to the internet company in the past and he can get them out same day. When he called in the morning he said it would be Thursday, but that he wasn't going to upgrade since he didn't think it was necessary (he said he has the basic residential service, which is in his house and is pushed to the several rental units on the property through multiple extenders that dilute the internet to basically nothing!). Very disappointing and we felt lied to - he has still yet to provide any refund.
