Thoroughly enjoyed this overnight stay. Clean rooms comfy bed and good linen. Very simple but lovely Building in the centre of town and the staff were very friendly and helpful giving us great tips on where to go and what to do.
The Metropole is in a great location, just a minute or two from the station if you arrive by train. There is also free parking at the rear. A lot of care has gone into maintaining the heritage features - leadlight windows, timber paneling, cosy sitting ares, fireplaces - and the public areas are warm and inviting. Check in / check out was fast and friendly, and all other staff we encountered were also helpful and friendly. It is an old building so there are some access issues - steep steps to the front door from the street and inside, one of the slowest lifts I have ever been in, and quite narrow hallways. The room we had was smallish but ok, however the windows overlooked the internal courtyard so it was quite dark and no fresh mountain air to be had! But there was a little lounge and desk area, the bed was comfy, the tv reception was fine and there was adequate room for a couple of overnight bags. On the down side ... the bathroom was tiny (think railway sleeper compartment size!). Anyone a bit bigger than average (up and down or across!) would have a hard time fitting in the shower, brushing their teeth and drying themselves. And the wardrobe, though a reasonably attractive vintage number, had a front to back hanging rail and wasn't quite wide enough for a men's jacket to fit neatly, and had those awful two piece coat hangers that are tricky enough on a widthwise rail but nigh on impossible in this one. Please, Housekeeping, buy some proper wooden hangers! We were there on a deals package so I understand the room was probably not one of their better ones, but it was good value for money at the discounted rate. The Yulefest dinner (included in the package) was fine - good service and generous helpings - and the buffet breakfast in the morning was also good, with lots of choices, although service was a little slow in topping up the hot dishes. We have stayed here before and most likely will stay again as we love the look and feel of the lounge areas and the location is perfect. But we will choose a bigger brighter room next time with a bathroom where we can swing our cats!
Firstly the staff at the hotel are very friendly and helpful; however the hotel is like stepping back 100 years!! It is very dated, and although the bedding in the room was clean the room itself was small and very dated. The only heating in the room was an oil radiator that got in the way, but was needed as it was very cold in the room. The bathroom was very dated - shower worked but the room was freezing. Breakfast was only served until 9am - I had the continental which was good, plenty to choose from.
To start with positives with the room was nice, on the car park side (so quiet) and the comfy bed with electric blanket was a huge plus. The building itself is like stepping back in time, lovely architecture, a library and games room. Unfortunately, after staying the night we went to use the shower and the shower head was completely not working. When you turned the water on it sprayed everywhere and didn't even provide a usable trickle. One lady who helped us was very apologetic and the other curt, blunt and refused partial refund, instead offering us a bottle of wine. In the end we had to use a room someone had just checked out of that hadn't yet been clean. Not a pleasant experience, sad as I had looked forward to staying.
The room was nice and clean with a comfy bed and electric blanket to help ease the cold. Had the hot breakfast in the morning which was delicious and there was a lot of variety. There's a library and games room to kick back in and other nooks to relax in. The Metropole organized tickets for the scenic world and explorers bus for us so it was nice to have everything organized in the one place. Thanks for an amazing stay :)
What a lovely place to stay. Give me electric blankets and a heater on a cold day and I'm happy! The only issue we had was noise, the room wasn't very isolated and we were on the train station side but it helps me sleep so i didn't mind.
We stayed in a lovely old world room that in my opinion when factoring in the cost far surpassed anything in Katoomba in this category including the Carrington. Not all people like old, but we do. Rooms are large, though bath room was tight. Plenty of nice public spaces in the hotel including games room and library. Staff very hospitable and helpful.
Did not actually stay here, but cancelled booking well in advance. Had to get Booking.com to intervene to get deposit refunded and even then when the refund was made it was $2 short. I see others have had similar experiences re long waits to get refunds.
We had a two night package which was very reasonable. A beautiful old guest house in excellent condition with a great atmosphere. Our room was very clean & comfortable. Our package included a full breakfast which was fantastic. The guest house being located right in town & opposite the railway station was an added bonus. All staff were excellent & they really made you feel welcome. We will definitely return.
We have been coming for fourteen years as a group. The rooms are very comfortable and clean, the sitting rooms are lovely, the ambience wonderful and the meals hearty. Extra vouchers thrown in for local tearooms and other attractions.
