We enjoyed our two night stay at this hotel. It has an old fashioned charm and furnishing that makes it unique. You will need to be able to walk up and down 2 or 3 flights of stairs to get to the rooms. While there is an elevator at the rear of the building, it is so slow that you can walk up and down faster than the elevator moves. So we got our exercise. We had a double bed in room 10, on the top floor. that was a good size and included a couch. Free wi-fi. A desk with power outlets to charge our electronics. Though the weather was hot during our stay, and we were on the top floor, the ceiling fan was more than adequate to ward off the heat. The ensuite bathroom had a shower and was ample sized. Lots of signs in the rooms to explain the quirks (i.e. hot water hand is on the right side, not the left. Lock doors inside of the room before leaving room, run the bathroom fan while taking a shower or set off the fire alarm), but that added to the charm of the hotel. The hotel offered discount tickets to Scenic World and the Jenolan Cave Bus, which was a nice amenity and we saved $2 on each ticket. There was a free continental breakfast consisting of toast and cereal, but service could have been better. One morning, When they ran out of skim milk, orange juice and coffee in the dining room, they were never replaced, so late comers didn't get any. The next morning at breakfast, those items were promptly replenished- so it was probably just a service issue. There was an option to pay $9 for a more substantial breakfast, but we didn't think beans, scrambled eggs, fried tomatoes and fruit was worth the extra money. The hotel has an excellent location. near Restaurants and Across the street from the train station and a very short walk to the 686 express bus (uses opal card) to Echo Point and Scenic World and to where we caught the bus to Jenolan Caves. So this hotel and it's location factored heavily in our DIY plan to visit the Blue Mountains via train. One note: This hotel also offers music concerts in the library on the second floor. Since no concerts were happening during our stay, we don't know whether the noise (music) would be an annoyance or not. Just saying.... Moderately priced. We recommend this hotel if you are staying overnight in Katoomba.
Great find and in the deal got breakfast included in the price. Basic comfortable, clean, and very good value for money I thought. Breakfast was very good. Buffet style unless you opted for the continental. I`ll be back!!
Charming guesthouse with relaxing ambience. Traditional features and central to Main Street Katoomba. Rooms are small but cozy. Good value. Found it pretty quiet too. Stroll to many eateries and quaint pubs.
We stayed in Room 23 so that my partner could compete in her 5th 'Six Foot Track' marathon ... which she completed in style AND in a PB! The rooms are not exactly capacious but the bed is comfortable, the shower is good and, when all you'll be doing is sleeping and enjoying a pleasant breakfast, what more do you need? It is clean, a little quaint, in need of some TLC is spots but the staff are friendly and obliging and our stay woukld encourage us to go back.
Good: beautiful Art Deco building with loads of character and charm. Quaint and quirky, excellent break out spaces (library and games room) and choice of various room options. Wonderful bed linen and the usual services (mini bar, tea/coffee facilities, free WiFi). Cute and cool atrium and many original features. Fantastic weekend receptionist who is unflappable and very reasonable. Our king room was on the front corner of the hotel and received sun during the day. One of two windows could be opened for fresh air and the ceiling fan provided a cooling option. Both a pedestal fan and radiator heater were available within the room. Breakfast (toast, cereal and juice) is included in the value for money room rate. You can upgrade to a continental breakfast for $9 and a simple take-away lunch can be purchased for $6. Limited parking spaces are available behind the hotel. Walk across the road to the train station, and around the corner to everything else. Echo Point viewing area is 2.6km away and the best Italian restaurant in town (Rene’s) is just around the corner. There’s a beautiful park across the road and reception sells passes to local attractions at a (slightly) discounted rate. Friendly staff! Bad: lots of creaky stairs and floorboards, and a super slow lift. Accessibility from the front and rear of the building is available, although you have to ask for the key code for the rear door - it wasn’t provided to me and I didn’t think to ask for it. We reported a noisy (and dusty) exhaust fan in the bathroom to reception and it was cleaned same day. We also reported a noisy, sticky sliding door (separating the bathroom and toilet from the living space) which jammed and needed new rollers. No obvious action was taken to repair/improve this. Fire sprinklers and the bedhead needed cleaning and the shower a good dose of strong bleach. The water pressure in the shower was not fantastic, though it is an older facility so could probably be expected. The water temperature is scalding hot - be careful - but cools very quickly when the neighbouring room uses their water. Ugly: the bed/s. In our king room, the bed was two king singles pushed together, with nothing added over the mattress edges to allow for comfort if sleeping in/near the middle. The mattresses were hard and springs were audibly loud each time I moved - which was frequent due to discomfort. We reported this to reception and were advised that it was a known issue (!!!) but new mattresses would hopefully be changed out during the day while we were out. I seriously doubt this occurred. The car parking out the back is only accessible by a steep, lumpy driveway. Do not attempt to take this climb if there are other vehicles doing the same thing, as maneuvering is tight. All spaces are tilted down on a small angle of decline towards the road. Summary: as I type this, I’ve been awake since 4am, courtesy of a huge blowfly buzzing around the room. My review would have been different had a little more attention to detail and investment in the ongoing maintenance of the guest house (coz, comfy beds!) been an obvious priority. The potential for this guest house to be simply stunning is well within reach, with fresh paint and a solid clean - including carpets and rugs - required. Some mould, mustiness and stuffiness was particularly noticeable in the rooms I accessed.
Weekend Receptionist (Ranyu) was very friendly, helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The king room 8 was small but comfortable, noting it was hot first night but put fan on second night and slept well. Breakfast was good in spacious room. Very close to all amenities and railway with "flat" walk to echo point and scenic world. Nice quaint and comfortable.
The Metropole Guest House is very near the Katoomba station. Short staircase before the main door. Check-in time between 2pm and 6pm. If checking in later, need to inform the hotel beforehand. This is because the main door will be locked at 6pm. When checking in, you will be given the main door key in case you return to the hotel after 6pm. Staff were polite and told me where were the nice food places. Sound-proofing was poor. I could hear people coming in after 6pm. There was a lot of dust on the ceiling fan.
We stayed two nights in this property. As reception closes at 6:00pm, we contacted the hotel prior our arrival so they gave us all the details for a late check-in. All was perfectly organized ! Our room was really nice and well-furnished. Decoration is vintage and we loved it: we felt like being in an old [but very clean and comfortable] manor. There was no air-conditioning in the room but with the low temperatures, it was not needed. Location is particularly good at 2-minute walk from the train station. Two issues however: - impossible to completely close one of our window [room 19], so we were a bit cold during the night ; - phonic isolation is poor. We were able to hear people talking as if they were in our room.
Great place to stay, very close to the station so travelled to Katoomba by train. Only a very short walk to the festival and all the great excitement of the Ukulele Festival. Have already got the unit on hold for next years festival as the Breakfast menu was great and people very friendly and its right in the middle of all the action.
Very helpful friendly staff. Very charming old world. Close to the station and all the shops and restaurants. We wished we had more time to stay and enjoy the facilities. Winter might be nice by the fire reading a book.
