We have stayed here regularly over the last few years, but have noticed a steady decline in standards, furnishings and even staffing. The rooms are definitely tired and on our last visit 10 days ago, I'd booked an 'executive ' room as these tend to be quieter and have slightly better facilities. No! The bed only had 2 hard pillows, only one chair, no dressing gown or slippers, no bottled water - not much in itself but when you've paid extra for these, then you expect them to be there! When I queried that it was indeed an executive room, I was told that there were superior furnishings - I've stayed many times and can assert that these haven't changed over the last 8 years! Someone from housekeeping eventually came to rectify the omissions. There is I believe a programme of renovation, but I've not seen real evidence yet in the rooms (the reception and restaurant have received a makeover). The window in the room is still the original Crittall single glaced steel window from the 60s, very poorly fitting. The view from our window overlooked a building site with a decontamination chamber because of asbestos. The carpet had a long streak of red - looked like blood - on it which obviously hadn't been cleaned. On the positive side, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast was good, but the staff were rushed off their feet and the restaurant was understaffed. Gone too, since our last visit, were the pots of fresh coffee, replaced by one machine! Over the last 3 stays, things have deteriorated, and despite being members, we don't think we have received any priority treatment - even when we've actually paid extra - so I doubt we'll be returning to this hotel for our next visit to Reading in 3 weeks! Very disappointed.

Hotel is in a good location but due to roadworks a little difficult to get to and from. Rooms are a little tired and a bit creaky certainly whoever was above at 5am sounded like they were in the room! Long walk from reception especially 300+ rooms so park carefully

I stayed for two nights on a business trip. Room was all as it should be. My issues were with the restaurant and waiting staff in the evening. There always seemed to be a lot of staff around but very very slow service. Not what you expect for the money. During dinner one night I saw three separate tables actually get up and walk over to a waiter in order to get there attention. Below the expected standard. I won't be returning

Thank you for such a welcoming stay food was good and so was staff Kids slept well and so did I and my wife Also it had a decent bar for me and my wife And really liked the way everything was presented

Have stayed at the Holiday Inn South several times. The breakfast on this occasion was disappointing. We arrived for breakfast about an hour before it closed but found all the cooked items were only just warm. The bacon was very hard. Perhaps been standing too long? They had run out of marmalade. It would also be a good idea to have a few sashets of instant coffee available. I would return again but hope breakfast would be improved.

Car park full (due to evening events in the hotel), long queue for check in and then it took ten minutes to get checked in as the system was slow, a couple had come to reception to complain about their room in person as despite them phoning reception no-one had been to see them to discuss their complaint, no-one answered the telephone for room service or the restaurant. Smoke detector is clicking loudly every few minutes so I am in for an interesting night's sleep. Finally managed to place my room service order via reception over an hour ago and nothing has turned up. Just called to chase and after a ten minute wait I was called back to say it is finally on its way after over an hour and a quarters wait. It finally turned up after nearly 95 minutes! In answer to the questionnaire in my room asking if my stay is a 10 out of 10. The answer is 2 out of 10 hence my one star rating. As an IHG gold card member I have stayed in a lot of Holiday Inns and this has to be the worst Holiday Inn I have ever had the misfortune to stay in.

The worst Holiday Inn we have ever stayed at. The hotel itself and the room were fine. However the service in the restaurant was terrible. The waiters were very keen to seat people but not keen to serve. It appeared that the waiters didn't have responsibility for certain tables and therefore none of them were interested in coming over to take orders or clear plates. There didn't appear to be a restaurant manager or anyone in charge. The wait in between each course was 30 mins plus just to order the next course. The food was ok, however, I wouldn't advise anyone to order the mixed grill. It's nearly £20 and you get hardly any meat - a tiny piece of steak, and tiny piece of gammon, one sausage, a mushroom, an egg and some salad . Breakfast service was equally shambolic - and it's self serve!! No bread, glasses, butter or tea bags for a very long time. We asked the waiters for more and were told curtly it's on its way. Tables were not cleared so people were waiting to sit down. The lady at breakfast who takes the room number was very good though - she seemed to be doing all the work whilst the waiters wandered around (clearing tables and seating people even though I don't think this was her job as she was behind the bar doing the coffees for the bar). They need a decent manager to organise them and tell them what needs doing. Will not go back there.

Booked this hotel for my daughter and her partner as a gift so gave her cash so she could pay when she got there of £334,00 for 2 nights when she checked in she was asked for a £200.00 cash deposit on top of her room rate of £334.00. There was no warning of this deposit either from the hotel or from Booking.com where I booked ths hotel. They said if they paid n card they would be charged £100.00 extra desposit! Room 309 was filty, the chair in there had a "sweat strain" over the back ofit, the kettle did not work nor the TV and also the plug did not fit properly in the bath together with the cobwebs it was a very unhappy exerperience for my daughter and I am gutted that as I paid so much for the room that it would be a very good hotel - WRONG. The staff were very embarrassed about asking for the extra deposit and they even said it is not mentioned anywhere on their website, Other customers at the reception were also very upset, I wouldnt mind if the rooms were in an exceptional condition and got ruined but they were less than 1 star and as I had booked it on Booking.com they had my card detals in any event. Heads up if you book this hotle check that they do need a deposit or not My daughter did not have the extra £200.00 cash on her to pay this "deposit".

I have stayed in a few of these hotels and this was very average compared to most. The check in was quite slow with only 2 people on check on at 2pm on the weekend of Reading festival. The room was nice, bed was ok but the bathroom was a bit dirty with dirty tiles, nothing a good scrub wouldn't have removed. There was no safe in the room, no hot chocolate in the room and it was quite noisey. When next door left or came back into their room the adjoining door rattled very loudly and woke me up a few times. The bar area looked nice and clean and the staff seemed nice and gave us some advice on the best way to get too and from the festival.

First night of my 3 day stay and thinking of checking out early. Ordered room service and despite chasing several times it never arrived (really shoddy). Iron missing from the room, airconditioning pumping out warm air and noisy family next door (I know that is not the hotels fault, but the walls are thin). I'm a platinum ihg member too.
