Proximity to the beach is great. The beach's sand is a little more coarse than I prefer, but we got used to it. The hotel staff is excellent. I'd describe them as very friendly, helpful, attentive, professional and polite. The Cabana we stayed had a more comfortable than normal bed, and working A/C, but the construction seems a little "sub-par", or in need of renovation: floor cracking (especially the connection to the walls). Our group occupied 6 Cabanas, all with the same cracking. A cockroach, and a scorpion got into one of those rooms, we suspect perhaps through such cracks. The tile work in the bathroom, and the calking was obviously done by amateurs. It seemed apparent there was little if any insulation in the walls / ceiling, as the A/C ran almost non-stop.
Hotel was a bit run down and the meals were overpriced. A 10% resort fee on top of the 12.5% tax is charged to all meals. Activities require a 4 person minimum so not ideal for single travelers who want to explore. No medical or first aid kit on hand in case of minor injuries either. Very off the beaten path so don't expect any miracles of excitement.
The cabana was nice and the staff was friendly. Each cabana had two rooms, we were expecting a cabana to ourselves but it wasn't bad. Kayaks and paddle boards were available for free use but the paddle boards were a little beat up. The cost of everything there was in American dollars which got expensive. Hopkins village is nearby and less expensive food was available. The excursions were awesome but pricy as well. The hotel charges taxes, service fees, and a gov't tax on everything. We did a few excursions, zip lining and repelling was 170/person plus the taxes ended up to be about 190/person just for an idea on how it adds up. All together the trip was awesome. Bring heavy duty bug repellant and if you are renting a car be prepared for a bumpy ride.
What a cool place! The adventure starts when you travel to Dangriga then to Hopkins... You are definitely out of the way! So relaxing and such an attentive staff you can't help but enjoy this place. We stayed in the beach cabana and they are exactly what they are built up to be.. Nice room, hammock, cool breezes, good food and lots of time to decompress. Do it... You won't be sorry.
We loved everything about our stay. The beach is beautiful and quiet. We were alone on our comfortable lounge chairs. The infinity pool was right on the beach with a swim up bar. Our room was huge and comfortable. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The location is central for site seeing. We rented a car and drove across the country and back in a day. The kids enjoyed the free kayaks and inner tubes to play in the ocean with. We had massages on the pier. We walked to many wonderful restaurants at night. Hopkins is small and friendly. We snorkeled and scuba dived from the hotel pier pick up. Everyday we had their special rum drink at the pool . I highly recommend the Jaguar Reef!
My son and I stayed at Jaguar Reef Lodge from July 8-15, 2014. I have nothing but nice things to say about the staff and accommodations. We stayed in a casita, which is half of a single building located steps from the beach. The room was large, quiet and very comfortable. There is a restaurant with very nice, although a little overpriced, food. The location is close to the city of Hopkins, which has some quite excellent local restaurants. We were even able to order pizza to our room. The tours available were reasonably priced and well guided. We were determined to take the ATM cave tour and the tour administrator at the resort worked to make that happen. Overall, an excellent experience. I loved the small size of the resort and the excellent staff.
If your looking to the perfect getaway spot for couples of family you will not belive this resort and supporting resorts. So perfect that I'm buying property in the area.
Hotel was very nice with a friendly staff. Beautiful setting with adventure activities close by and easily booked (snorkeling, jaguar reserve/waterfall hike, and Zip-Line were all incredible). Don't expect a resort like feel in the town of Hopkins, which is a short distance away. Quite a bit of poverty, but some nice restaurants scattered about. Only disappointment was the beach. Though beautiful from afar, there is trash that washes ashore every morning along with seaweed. Whether it's the trash flowing in from the river or from cruise ships, it's still pretty disgusting. Mainly appears after a big rain. Stick to the swimming pool and take a boat to the reef for snorkeling if you want to get wet. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves, especially our 7 year old son who made a lot of friends with other kids.
