We divided our eight nights on Ambergris Caye between Grand Caribe and Costa Blu. Two completely different experiences and I am glad we had them both. True Caribbean feel and remote stay with Costa Blu. More commercialized and pristine facilities at Grand Caribe. The place is magnificent. If you are used to staying at the JW Marriott, Westin, Secrets or other wonderful hotels with modern amenities, this place is probably for you. My husband and I are both in the construction business. I have never seen tile work like here. From the tool area to the bedrooms and bathrooms. It is beautiful and amazing. Also, we hardly ever heard anyone above us. The place felt like it built like a tank or Fort Knox. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. The bed was pretty comfortable but our pillows were not comfortable at all. Too hard and non-plyable. Be cautioned when booking a studio room. Since it was my husband and I and we knew we would not be in our room much, that is all we really needed. However, when I booked she informed me there was “no view”. I figured that meant I did not have a view of the bay or the ocean. NO, that is not what it means. It means that there is no window below 6’ high in your room and you truly have “no view” out. I couldn’t see out without standing on the bed. That freaked me out a little and did not sit well with me. I typically always have a balcony or a large window at the least. Nope, not on a studio room. However, the room was very nice and would have been fine if we were with a larger group and this would have been the second bedroom in one of the condos. Pros: • Loved the people! Everyone we came in contact with was great and worked long hours and extremely hard. • Carlos at the pool. We started talking to him one day about the iguanas and our conversations developed from there. If I could have, I would have adopted him and brought him home with us. If Carlos reads this I hope he remembers us. • Ian at the pool. He was very friendly and attentive knowing our names and what we drink. He was a pleasure to talk with and have as our waiter. • Julie at the front desk and who answers emails. She was very responsive and helpful. Would I return to Grand Caribe? Not sure. There was absolutely nothing wrong with our stay. However, we like more of a resort feel vs. a condominium feel, which this has. However, I would return to see the wonderful people we met while there. You just didn’t get the connection between other travelers like we typically meet on vacation as there was no place people really gathered at night or for happy hour. Just seemed to lack a resort feel.
I’m writing this during our stay so we won’t forget a thing! What’s great? 6 pools to choose from, very few kids, a pool bar, food and drink service at all pools, daily immaculate cleaning,, daily laundry done for you, groceries delivered, on site golf cart rentals, and very friendly people working here. In addition there are several good restaurants close by with fun bars. Everything is a golf cart, bike ride, or walk away! The food and drink prices are very affordable compared to other islands. Our room was absolutely spotless with everything we needed. It was huge for a one bedroom! There’s a mix of Americans and Canadians that we’ve met. You can also walk a very long way along the beach and see other resorts, No racing to get a lounge chair either! The only con is the seaweed. It’s everywhere at every beach. It’s a shame because you can’t swim in the ocean. Hopefully they will come up with a remedy. But the resort tries really hard to keep it cleaned up!
Grand Caribe was awesome. They took care of flights from Belize City to San Pedro. They booked our snorkeling trip. They have golf cart rentals. The resort was the nicest I saw on the island. Our condo was beautiful. The pictures on the website don’t do it justice. We were pleasantly surprised when we entered. The staff is very polite and accommodating. We especially enjoyed Perceval who served us daily at the pool. The maids freshened up our room everyday and had laundry service if needed. I highly recommend this resort. We stayed a week at the Grande Caribe in February 2018. While the resort, grounds and people are amazing we found our condo a bit lacking in charm and comfort. Since the units are individually owned it is luck of the draw on which unit you get. Our condo was clean but the bed was very uncomfortable. It was a piece of foam on a squeaky bed frame. All you had to do was breathe and the bed would make noise. The kitchen which was sparsely equipped and it didn’t have any blinds or curtains on the window so at night anyone on a higher floor could see in. Having said that we had a great time. We rented a golf cart from the resort which was a lot of fun. If you are there to scuba dive the resort has a dock where the dive shops pick up and drop off. If you are there for a beach vacation you might want to go somewhere else. The “beach” was nothing more than a strip of sand with some beach loungers on it. It is not swimmable. In February while we were there the infamous seaweed invaded the shore lines. It has an awful smell and workers were there daily to remove it. There isn’t anything any of the resorts or businesses can do to stop it from coming in so I’m not placing blame on the Grande Caribe. It’s just something that comes with visiting in February. It was also quite windy the whole time we were there. My husband scuba dived and it made for some rough seas but he still enjoyed it. However, those with motion sickness not so much. We did venture to “secret beach” one afternoon. The beach there was nice and water is calm. Overall, I would stay at the Grand Caribe again but in a different room and visit in a different month. The people are friendly, resort is clean and Ambergris Caye is beautiful. Don’t be afraid to venture out and talk to the locals and ex-pats.
No place I'd rather stay than the Grand Caribe. First class resort and free daily laundry service. Top Notch! If you are headed to San Pedro, and you want to stay at the best resort in the area, then the Grand Caribe is the place for you. My wife and two teenage sons just spent 7 days there, and we don't have a bad thing to say about the resort.
Our family loved this resort. It was clean, safe, had gorgeous ocean views, had large comfortable condo space, and a huge amazing pool we enjoyed. The pool bar service is spectacular with delicious food and drinks. It is a quiet simple resort - not a ton of activities and zero nightlife. The beach is tiny and you can’t easily swim in the ocean. I don’t recommend this island or resort if a large sandy beach is what you seek. It was lovely for relaxing family time, swimming in the pool, snorkel adventures, and golf cart fun to the cool cultural town for meals. We rented a cart all week and loved using it every night. We went to secret beach twice to swim in the ocean and enjoyed the adventure of getting there - Aprox 30-40 min bumpy golf cart ride. Overall we highly recommend the resort and will come back! I think it is the best place on the island for families.
We were actually met in Belize City Airport by reps from Grand Caribe. Directed to the proper plane then picked up in San Pedro and drove to the facility. After arriving there we were greeted with an ice cold rum punch and smiles. We got checked in, rented a golf cart which was delivered to the facility. Great people, clean rooms, sweet views, clean rooms, nice pool, clean rooms.
We stayed 7 days , GCR is an extremely clean , friendly, relaxing resort .From pickup at airport , checkin , pool bar “Bennie , Perceval “ housekeeping and all staff really nice and personable. We rented golf cart , went to truck stop, dive bar , secret beach and our favorite eating place was Rojo . We did sunset cruise , night snorkeling, snorkeling, scuba which can be arranged thru concierge. Only down side was the sea grass - which they cleaned the beach daily- which you can NOT control ! so with all the positives We would stay here again ! 😁
If you are looking for an easy, family friendly resort not far from town this is your place. The room and property were impeccably clean and the staff were super friendly. The property is about 10 minutes (by golf cart) north of the city which gets you away from the congestion (which really isn't much) but keeps you within easy striking distance of all the shopping and restaurants. We do a fair amount of traveling with our kids and the only thing we value more than cleanliness is ease of use. Vacations only last a finite time, and spending hours on the phone trying to set up or change activities is not my idea of time well spent. In this Category the Grand Caribe absolutely excels! As soon as I made the reservation the Concierge started emailing me to ask about our plans. Within 2 emails I had our dives, mainland excursions, and golf cart set up. When I showed up, everything was ready to go. More impressive though, was how easy it was to change or modify our plan . In the course of a week I changed one dive trip; added another; canceled the mainland excursion because one of the kids was not feeling well; and added a fishing trip. All of this was done with zero hassle. I talked to the concierge who made a phone call and the changes were made. Not once was I asked to pay a change or cancellation fee. It seemed like most people we met were happy with their accommodation so I wouldn't sweat the decision too much, but if you are looking for clean, easy and a beautiful location, you can't go wrong with the Grand Caribe.
Friendly, immaculate, great service, gorgeous grounds and a location right on the water all made the Grand Caribe a great choice for us. Our unit was lovely and featured a great kitchen and balcony overlooking the numerous pools and beachfront. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We were told when we checked in that the resort offers free laundry service, which is pretty impressive. When I dropped off a load later in the week I let them know that I didn't expect to have it back for a least 24 hours but they had it done and in our condo in under two hours. That was above and beyond! The place has a great activities "hut" with staff that will help you find the adventure that is just your speed. There is also a dock where you can catch the boat shuttle to "downtown" San Pedro. You get the sense of really being taken care of. One evening we met a staff member who had radioed for the shuttle and was waiting with a a condo owner on the dock for it to appear. We were all talking and he said that when folks go downtown in the evening on the boat, the resort keeps track to make sure they get back. If a guest doesn't return on a later boat, the resort staff will find them. Security at the resort appears to be very good. One thing to keep in mind -- there are no elevators. So inquire about which floor you'll be on when you book.
