Great people at the property
The property was great except for getting in and out of the nice pool. No ladder or stairs. Not having a/c and sleeping with bug spray on was not good. Nice people wonderful breakfast.

Mosquitoes
I understand that mosquitoes are normal for Costa Rica. However, some screens on the windows would really save your clients a lot of pain and agony and it doesn’t cost much.

One of my best memories
This place is amazing. It is truly one of my best travel memories with my family. The beach was remote and empty. And beautiful. The property was always being cleaned, breakfast was delicious, and everyone was so accommodating. We went in the beginning of the rainy season, so we had afternoon rained cool things off. no problem sleeping with the fan. I would absolutely go back again and can’t recommend highly enough.
Room was basic with 1 queen bed and 1 bunk bed, and ceiling fan; nothings else. Since weather is around 87 °F (30°C), nights are terribly hot because ceiling fan was not enough, even worse for the bottom bunk bed where the wind won't reach. Try to open doors or windows at your own risk and mosquitos will eat you alive or perhaps other criters will visit you since there are no mosquito nets around doors/windows. If windows and doors are kept closed, fan will only blow warm air making sleep almost impossible. The bathroom is like a sauna due to the heat and humidity where you will come out of there sweating. About the service, there are two very kind ladies who come every morning to keep the property clean and they will offer you an excellent breakfast for US $10 per person that really deserve the 5 star. They usually are gone by 1:00 PM and nobody is in charge after that time. I tried to talk to the owner about having a reimbursement for 2 nights because my arrival and departure fligts were changed but it ended up that he lives in Norway so I wasn't even able to know him and he didn't even bother to reply. Location is good since you will have the beach right in front of the property, the problem is that it is in the middle of nowhere and driving conditions are really stressing. If you're not familiar with routes you will find unpaved streets in really bad condition. there is even a route (Juan de Leon) that should have a warning that only 4 wheel vehicles and not regular cars
We arrived to Totobe after an hour of driving on really bad roads, and no preparation for that. I contacted the owner the day before to see about arrival and directions, and only heard back once via VRBO’s message service. I requested to be contacted directly in case of issues finding the place or getting lost (which happened several times on our way there) and never got a response. I have also contacted him since all the issues and still have no response. Will send a screenshot of the communications below.
1.) The room we were given was sandwiched between a common area, and another bedroom, and had only wood lattice about 8 feet up the partial walls, so therefore NO PRIVACY or separation of light, sound or air between the spaces. We are on our honeymoon and this set up is not acceptable for anyone really. The photos on the website show a portion of what I now realize is the lattice (looks more like a window on the site), but do not clarify the fact that it is open and not sealed to other guests rooms. The foto on the site is of a different room as well, not the room we were given that had a much larger and clearer area of lattice, if that photo had been included it would have been more apparent perhaps, but is not. Also nothing states the fact in any of the descriptions.
2.) Also, because of the huge holes mosquitoes and bugs enter into the space freely. There was a MUCH TOO SMALL mosquito net hanging over the bed but it was so dirty and full of bugs that I didn’t even wan
The room was not available the first night of arrival I rented a hotel the property manager gave us free breakfast for the inconvenience it’s a wonderful breakfast and the staff is great.there is no security and even when you lock your door the windows are floor to ceiling and you can just step in locks are to rusted to work. The guest were so loud party all night loud music and banging doors and screaming no sleep was had .pool not at all what you would swim in .it’s very unfortunate because the location on the beach is breathtaking

Beautiful place to stay
The property is wonderful with everything you need including very good wifi connection. It would be good to fumigate to ensure minimum amount of small bugs. It would also help to have a local phone number available for quick questions. The beach is pristine and meters from the main building. It is a bit isolated and I would advise taking some minor precautions such as having a local night watchman.

Incredible Gem
Be prepared to go back in time to a much simpler, rustic and authentic beach vacation existed. The house is straight out of Swiss Family Robinson and presents an amazing stage to the concert of benefits of this paradise - the roaring waves, the untouched habitat and beach that felt like we had it all to ourselves. It was simply incredible and allowed me to bond and connect with my 9 year old son in ways that were authentic and in nature. The kayaks through the mangrove, the surfing, the horseback riding offered moments of wonder for both of us. The staff at this incredible oasis are incredibly friendly, helpful, hospitable and most importantly, nice! Marjori, Flori, and Willem met us with a smile, cooked delicious Costa Rican food and made our stay simply perfect. I would highly recommend for people who want a vacation getaway that is secluded, beautiful and relaxing. If you require Liz amenities, constant activities and entertainment, this is not the place for you. Thank you, Alfredo, Marjori, Flori and Willem!

excellent but remote location
This place is remote! They recommend a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get over the peninsula mountains and to the beach, but we made it in a 2-wheel drive SUV (we weren't able to get a 4wd) - based on the numerous dirt roads and the quality of some of them (and this was in the dry season), I'd definitely recommend a 4WD vehicle.
The place itself has 2 buildings with bedrooms upstairs and community gathering downstairs (covered but with no walls). I only saw the 2 rooms in our building, but they weren't great: I'd describe this place more like a hostel, and that's not what we were expecting or wanting. Our room had one wall shared with a hallway that guests of the other room had to walk through, and that wall didn't extend to the ceiling - this means that noise and light gets into the room and you can easily hear people downstairs (and noise escapes this room, if you're concerned about privacy). This partial-wall also allows for insects or bats to enter the room (there were some bats at the property every night we were there and they did fly into the "loft" or "living room" area just outside our room and the hallway, but didn't enter our room, but bugs did). Another wall of our room, adjacent to the loft/living room, also was a partial wall, but the top part was "finished" with some lattice and screen (the screen was pointless since bugs could enter through the other half-wall). The furnishings were basic and the room had a queen bed (or king?) with a bunkbed - designed for lots of people, hostel-style. When anyone walked by our room, the floor/walls/windows rattled with each step. Our room did have it's own bathroom with shower (basic, but do-able) - I'm told that the other building's 2 rooms share a bathroom. ALso, the lock in the door to our room was a joke: the door handle was almost falling off the door, the lock was an antique (the key looked like something that would fit into a pirate's treasure chest), and the lock was broken such that you had to jiggle the key around in the lock for 5 minutes before you could catch and turn the lock to lock *or unlock* it (if there was a fire, your quickest escape would be to break through the door or window). This room technically doesn't have an ocean view unless you open the curtains to your room and look through the window and through the hallway windows, which means that the guest in the other room walking through the hallway can look into your room.
The downstairs community areas are quite nice. Each bu

What a beautiful location Totobe is located
Our hosts were friendly and accommodating. A small family business with a stunning beach location.
We stayed only 1 night in Sept. 2021. The place is pleasant, with many caveats.
1) Upsides
- Clean property
- Ocean view and sound of the waves. Almost no one on the beach.
- Good size pool
- Responsive owner albeit only in the morning in terms of response time.
- Breakfast: excellent
- Pets allowed
- Good Wifi
- Friendly attentive staff when there
2) Downsides
a) The listing is misleading on both Hotels dot com and VRBO.
- “2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 3229 sq ft.” Incorrect by a long way. Instead it is 1 bedroom (300+ sq ft), shared bathrooms, shared kitchen
- No walls above doors, letting in insects and noise (and thus no privacy). Should be mentioned in listing.
- No working electrical sockets (except bedside USB adapter outlet works)
- No queen size sheet. two separate single-person sheets, side by side instead
- “Modern rooms”: no. See above. Also no air conditioning
b) Other downsides
- Service: no full-time staff and relatively poor communication.
- Big waves, not great for swimming
- The area: beautiful Playa Miguel beach to the right of the property is clean. A ton of garbage that was clearly dumped around the estuary.
VRBO / Hotels dot com not responsive about correcting the listing or partial refund. Owner refuses both.

Outstanding mini resort! paradise on earth.
Conny and Ingo are what makes this place outstanding. They are so friendly and knowledgeable and make sure everyone has a great time with fun activities like Coconut Bowling to surfing lessons and kayaking in the mangroves +++ . The accommodations, wonderful breakfasts, pool, beautiful grounds, glorious beach, incredible sunsets and starry nights make this place Paradise on earth. I would recommend it for anyone who has no mobility restrictions who has the determination to make it there. The only negative is the “no see” microscopic flies in early morning and sunset. non toxic bug spray or cream is a must.
The 160 from Samara should be avoided if you do not have a 4x4. Take instead route north to South from Hwy 1 to Puerto Moreno Rte 18 to Rte 21 to Rte 161 to Carmora to Bejuco to Playa San Miguel. This seems complicated but is by far the best route with incredible vistas and sleepy villages and ranches. We do hope to be back in the near future.

This is the place for solitude!
Completely off the beaten path, which is exactly what we wanted. I wasn't expecting it, but with no other distractions around, I spent four days learning to surf having the entire beach to myself. There are not a whole lot of amenities, so if you are one who needs pampering, go somewhere else. If you are low maintenance, you will love it, as my family did.

New resort, European styling, beautiful use of natural wood throughout.
Con and Ingo are very friendly and welcomed us when we arrived. They told us about many different local places to see and do. We enjoyed an amazing breakfast with eggs, fresh fruit, toast, coffee and fresh squeezed juice as part of our package. The bedrooms are open to the air. We packed a mosquito net for our trip and were happy we did so that we were not disturbed by bugs. Great place. I highly recommended.

We had an amazing trip and this home didn't disappoint! So beautiful and so close to the ocean. Pool was very large and nice. The entire grounds were kept very pristine. Lety and Maureen took great care of us and cooked great food!! They were so sweet taking care of anything we needed. Our beaches was very private and not crowed, definitely recommend a stay!
